I'm not sure about every country but I've seen it's already gone #1 in Cyprus, Venezuela, Bulgaria, Norway, Costa Rica, France, Portugal, Poland, and Spain. So that seems really really good! :) Other countries I randomly checked: US - #4 Ireland - #4 Denmark - #10 Italy - #3 Canada - #5 Australia - #77 (I think it was just released since it was in the 80s just 20 minutes ago) So...slaying per usual. Wow it's doing great, thank you very much! And #1 in Portugal?! Yay, go my country! LOL It's only #2 in my country. :'( Ironically, being blocked by Lana Del Rey's new song.

I think to suggest the sound isn't influenced by Lana's sound is silly.
It's clearly got that slow-tempo, ethereal, heavy drumming, hazy, atypical structure, Emile Haynie-style production, it just meets the more conventional Stargate production too.
Even from the whispery, off-beat vocal style and pronunciation in the hook. If you think the record company thought it was all a coincidence, then that's silly too.
I'm not saying ZOMG she's copying, or that it's all that similar (its style has a very distinctive Rihanna flavor...weirdly enough I can still here some of that island vibe there), but it's certainly informed by a very successful critically acclaimed sound that Lana Del Ray has been a part of bringing in.

Which Lana Del Rey tracks does "Diamonds" sound like? I'd like to hear them. I must admit that Rey is squarely in the "don't like the single(s) so cannot be bothered with the album" column for me along with Carly Rae Jespen. So I wouldn't know "her sound" if I heard it. Born To Die. Thanks. I listened to them both back-to-back. The tempos are similar so I can sort of hear the comparison, but the moods are totally different to me. "Diamonds" definitely sounds much more like a typical Sia song written for Rihanna especially in the harmonies. That's essentially what it is so it's no real shock there. I think Rihanna does a better job of making this her own than Christina did with some of her recent Sia-penned tracks. I have no problem with artists co-opting someone else's style for a track or two IF they manage to make it their own to some degree.

This sounds like Lana Del Ra/ey? Ew. I'll probably hate it then.

I finally heard it. I can definitely hear LDR in this combined with Sia. I don't even know what to say about it right now.

I am sort of confused she is singing like Sia. I am not crazy, right? She is totally mimicking Sia's voice at parts? Or does Sia have vocals on the actual track and that is what is confusing me?

Mimicking it seems. It sounded way more like Sia when I heard it on the radio. When I bought it on iTunes it sounded much more like Rihanna, but I can definitely still hear she's singing like Sia would but now I can actually tell it's Rih.

The fuck are you all talking about? This is great! Nice change of pace for her, and I love the fact that all her 7 lead singles are THAT MUCH different from each other. The production is really cool, and I hope they film a beautiful video for this, the song could really benefit itself from a stunning visual. I'm not sure if this will catch on and reach No. 1, but it definitely has the potential to grow on people

#55 on iTunes here; now that it's actually morning it will most likely rocket up during the daylight hours (it hit Aus iTunes at 11PM last night hence the lack of instantaneous blow-up)

Finally heard this. Why is she singing so weird? It's distracting. Badly.
Otherwise, I like it.

Eh. I've listened to this several times now and I'm still not feeling it. As of now, it's tied with 'Russian Roulette' as my least favorite lead single of hers. It just feels so...anticlimactic? I'm not loving her vocals, either.
Maybe I'm crazy, but I don't hear Lana in this at all, and I'm a huge Lana stan. *shrugs*

Listened for a second time. Yes, I do hear the Lana "Born To Die" comparisons, mostly because of the drum beat and the orchestration. A grower of a song if I EVER heard one. Perhaps I need to be as high as Rihanna to TRULY appreciate but I have heard worse from her - not in a lead single, per se, but definitely in her catalog of songs. I still would have preferred Sia singing lead and not just...background here because I definitely hear her, loud and clear.

Didn't really notice the BTD comparisons until I read them here (and i listen to that song a LOT), but you know what I did hear? Especially in the intro... M83's Midnight City.

For all the people with questions about the vocals:
1. It seems like she's adopted Sia's pronunciation of some words from the reference track, but then I hear some of her own accent in there, as well. Which makes it even more weird.
2. She has a tendency to mumble and not really enunciate, at times. It has gotten better over the years though.
3. In addition to that, there is a type of auto tune (which is used in this song) that usually makes the singer sound mush-mouthed, and "heavy," or "draggy." It's really hard to explain if you don't already know what it sounds like, but that, too, is adding to it.
Having said all that, I like the vocals the way they are because I think it enhances the track.

I suppose this has the potential to grow on me, but right now it's just sort of meh. There's nothing making me press the play button over and over like all of her other lead singles.

I didn't get the Lana comparisons at first either, but I can hear "Born To Die" now too. I agree with Live Your Life on the Sia thing. It's not that I think she sounds like her, but that she heard Sia's demo and sang it the same way, probably without even thinking. It's like how when I hear a Sia song I sing along with the same inflections and ridiculous enunciation, but it's not as if I sound like her (I sound better).
Anyway, reading this thread does make me sad that I don't like it more. I couldn't wait for it anyway and if I'd known people would be comparing it to "Born To Die" and "Midnight City" I'd have been even more excited. I feel like it's going to really grow on me eventually because it is so anthemic and atmospheric, I'm just not quite there yet.

Even if it sucks, it's going straight to number uno cuz anything baphomet touches turns to gold even if it is sh!tastic.

I like it, but...it doesn't seem like a smash at this point. I think it still has hit potential though. Seems like it'll be a grower. I don't mind the change in artistic direction. It'll be interesting to see how this does! :)

I hear no LDR whatsoever. I do hear production heavily influenced by Kanye's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, however...

I have had this on repeat since hearing it a few hours before the premiere. I was going to give an overview of the track, but I knew there would be meltdowns and freakouts before it premiered (it happened afterwards instead) because of how it was.
I think it's a really great song. It's different from her other singles. It has an 80s feel. It's not the usual paint by numbers dance/pop that some of us were expecting and hoping for. Why can't she do something different? One minute people say she is cutting edge and others feel she is stagnating with the same song. And then she does something like this and people say her career is over? She has had underperforming singles before.
I still think this will go all the way to number one. It has a really slow burn (IMO) and is perfect for the Fall season. It will have fairly strong consistent sales and airplay. It has been only out for barely 12 hours. Give it some time.
