IT’S ALL ABOUT DAVE'S WORLD
Dave Matthews Band Will Sell 260-275k for #1; Dylan, Avetts, Little Big Town Bow
September 12, 2012
The Dave Matthews Band has the kind of populist appeal Barack Obama would die for, and pretty much the same audience, too. The veteran RCA crossover jam band’s latest studio album, Away from the World, will debut at #1 next week with sales of between 260-275k. Those figures are based on one-day sales reports from physical music retailers not dealing in black-market iPhone 5s and the usual digital suspects.
The group, who play Hollywood Bowl tonight, sold 424k in the first week of its previous album, June 2009’s mellifluously titled Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, which was Grammy-nominated for Best Rock Album and Album of the Year.
Bob Dylan’s Tempest, already the subject of widely varying views, is his 35th in a 50-year recording career, mostly at Columbia Records, and is on target for between 95-105k in sales, highlighted by the opening of a temporary "pop-up shop" on Melrose Avenue in L.A. devoted entirely to Zimmy product. That will put Bob in a rundown for second place with veteran American/Republic roots band Avett Brothers, whose latest, The Carpenter, is estimated to do between 90-100k. The projected total dwarfs that of the Rick Rubin-nurtured group's previous album, I and Love and You, which debuted with 40k in sales in Sept. ’09. The Avetts memorably performed a tribute to acoustic music with Dylan and Mumford & Sons at the Grammy ceremony two years ago.
Capitol Nashville country rockers Little Big Town’s fifth album, Tornado, is also looking at first-week sales of 90-100k, which would also more than double its last album, The Reason Why, which debuted with 42k.
Young Turks/XL hip U.K. alternative act The xx’s critically acclaimed sophomore album Coexist should do between 60-70k.
American/Republic’s ZZ Top album, La Futura, co-produced by the band’s Billy Gibbons with Rick Rubin, is estimated at 25-28k.
Album sales were down 3% vs. last week, down 13% vs. same week last year and down 5% year to date.
Track sales were up 3% vs. last week, up 9% vs. same week last year and up 6% year to date.
TEA sales were down 1% vs. last week, down 7% vs. same week last year and down 2% year to date.

Really crazy that The Avett Brothers may outsell Dylan.
The longevity of DMB is very very impressive.

The New Release Schedule said:
Dave Matthews Band 275k Bob Dylan 111k Avett Brothers 65k Little Big Town 45k ZZ Top 25k DMX 25k Kix Brooks 20k
I'm trying to get a current NRS, but I am having no luck.

This will be the sixth #1 in a row for DMB, I think, breaking a record? I read that yesterday so I figured someone here could confirm that if it was true.

Jay-Z has had 9 albums hit #1 in a row I believe. Not including his collab albums. That's probably what disqualifies him. I guess it's a record for studio albums, because DMB have had a LOT of live albums that didn't go to #1 (and a compilation album). DMB's longevity and consistency is astounding.

What about Dylan's longevity? 50 albums in and 50 years into his career and he's still debuting near the top.

The Beatles hold the record for most #1 albums in a row, 9, set back in the 60's.

Fantastic for Little Big Town. This. It's amazing, how "Pontoon" has really put them on the map. Compared to what the New Release schedule said, that's an excellent forecast for LBT's Tornado. Same goes for the Avett Brothers. Both only did 40k with their last albums, and may do close to 100k this time out.

DMB fits that same criteria then, and people were talking about their accomplishment... ???

I think that was a joke, expressing surprise in the interest in Dave Matthews.
Often times if the artist is not a pretty pop singer in a skirt, there is not much interest here.

I know it was a "joke". I'm saying it was an attempt to make a snarky joke, but it would have made more sense if people were championing Carly Rae Jepsen and ignoring Bob Dylan. People were talking about Dave Matthews Band's accomplishment.

^I'm just saying, there's no real reason to be surprised when someone who doesn't fit the "pulse demographic" doesn't get much attention.

How are the releases shaping up in the next few weeks and months? I feel like next week should be a big week.. at least it will be for me as I plan on buying 5 or 6 new releases that are coming out and the week after has 3 or 4 that I plan on getting. Holy smokes!

Great for The XX! Their debut should cross 400k soon, great for an album that pretty much sold itself by word of mouth :)
