» Signage: Republic Nashville has signed A Thousand Horses to its roster. The Nashville-based band calls its sound a "blues and booze-infused cocktail of southern rock and country." More here. Source: Country Aircheck Today (05/27) ** Several of their songs are available for streaming at their website (linked above) via a SoundCloud widget. There's one called "Tennessee Whiskey" or something like that that I really enjoyed. They've got a cool sound that sounds a bit more accessible than what I've heard from The Cadillac Three. Definitely a southern rock/country/blues mix but I'm liking what I'm hearing. On a related note...dang, is Scott Borchetta building an empire or what? Six acts signed to Big Machine proper, 6 on Valory, and now 7 on Republic (including Dallas Smith & Savannah Keyes), plus they've just launched Dot Records and Nash Icons. Sabre14 will love the Dallas Smith signing. A Thousand Horses? Certainly a catchy sounding name. At least its not A Thousand Donkeys. That would be Jerrod Niemann's band.

Sabre14 will love the Dallas Smith signing. Dallas has been with BMLG since last year, they just haven't officially released a song of his to US radio yet. He'll likely be assigned to either Republic or Dot Records. I love the name A Thousand Horses as well. You should check out some of their music at that link to their website. I quite liked their sound. ** Members of A Thousand Horses: Michael Hobby, Bill Satcher, Zach Brown, Graham Deloach, and Jonathan Carman. At least they picked A Thousand Horses for their name rather than the Zach Brown Band.

"Nothin' But Summer" and "What Kinda Love" are great songs. Then he gave us the Scott Borchetta marketing, FGL inspired, bro-country copycated "Tippin Point". Perhaps he can show what the fine folks north of the border know, and deliver a good song as his official U.S terrestrial radio single. I'm still hopeful for Autumn Hill getting an American record deal. :)

Republic put out "Tippin' Point" but the EP was a Big Loud Mountain release. Still, I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up on Dot. He'd be a good guy to get the label in the door, not unlike Jack Ingram with Big Machine way back when. As for the whole roster, I think you'll see Reba and The Mavericks slide from Valory to the "Nash Icons" label soon. -- Warner Music Nashville has added a THIRD radio promo team so while they'll cross promote artists from each roster, there are distinct Atlantic, Elektra and Warner Brothers artists now. The promo is called "Team WEA" (For those that don't know the WEA stands for Warner Electra and Asylum but now means Atlantic since they leased the Asylum name to Curb).

Awesome! She's my least favorite of the Pistol Annies, but that's not saying much since I've been a huge Miranda Lambert fan for years and Ashley Monroe's Like a Rose was one of the best country albums released last year. Still, will be looking forward to seeing how her solo music shapes up, and I hope the three of them keep issuing albums with the Pistol Annies, even if radio play is not in the cards.

It's nice that Warner Music Nashville has added a third promo team, but overall that label has the strangest structure. I find it strange how they don't tie the promo teams to the imprints, like all other labels do. They could simply have one promo team for Warner Bros. proper, one for Atlantic, and one for Elektra, but instead we have Team WMN, Team WAR, and Team WEA, and that's just weird because their is no "Reprise" in there anymore (the "R" in WAR), and then Atlantic is represented by both A's (in WAR and WEA). Admittedly, I don't think I totally understand the contracts that Hunter Hayes and Brett Eldredge have. To my understanding, they are signed to Atlantic Records (which is not Nashville-based) as well as Warner Music Nashville, but I'm not entirely sure if that's correct. Basically, I understand Atlantic Records to be a part of the Warner Music Group and not WMG's Nashville division (Warner Music Nashville). Anyway, I just wish WMN would assign the promo teams to the 3 named imprints: Warner Bros., Atlantic, and Elektra (which would make it no different than Sony with Arista, Columbia, and RCA). Jana Kramer is really the only artist that WMN has designated to the Elektra imprint (along with Dean Alexander and Big Smo), but they could move artists around and basically even it out so that a third of the artists would be on Warner Bros., a third on an Atlantic imprint, and a third on the Elektra imprint.

Hunter is the only Atlantic NY - signed artist that I know of. But WMN handles all marketing and promo. Brett was Esposito's first dining at WMN.

Regarding the bolded part, I did know both of those things, but everything I can find online about Brett says that he is signed to Atlantic (NY) as well. Atlantic's website has him listed on its roster. The only other country acts are Hunter Hayes (obviously) and Zac Brown Band (they may no longer be associated with Atlantic but perhaps they did re-sign with them). So it would seem to me that Brett signed with Atlantic first, and then got signed to WMN by Esposito...sort of like a 'dual contract', same as Hunter.

Only hunter gets A&R advice from Craig Kallman.

Maybe Brett doesn't get his A&R from Atlantic but he was signed to Atlantic by Kallman around the same time he was signed to WMN. That's all I've been saying--that Brett's contract is more or less the same as Hunter's (Atlantic NY/Warner Music Nashville), whereas all the other WMN artists (except Jana with Elektra) are Warner Bros proper. Brett's Last.fm bio mentions his connection to Kallman. There are some other sources too but they say the same exact thing word for word so I only linked to the one. Basically, Byron Gallimore had Brett play a showcase and that's how he got noticed by Carole Mobley of WMN. "Mobley and Kallman then signed Brett to Atlantic Records".. That was back in 2009/2010. Hunter signed with Atlantic in September 2010. "Raymond" was released at the same time (Sept '10), whereas "Storm Warning" was released in May 2011.

I read somewhere that the Josh Abbott Band is with Atlantic. What is their status with Atlantic. That's another confusing situation. It was reported way back in summer/fall 2012 that Josh had partnered with Atlantic/WMN (probably similar to Hunter and Brett) and would still keep his own PDT Records. But everything has been pretty quiet on that front. Once they release new music we'll probably have a better understanding of the situation.

Like we were saying, Warner Music Nashville doesn't operate that way. They distribute their artists fairly evenly across 2 promo teams (and they just added a third promo team today) rather than any labels/imprints. So even though Jana is 'assigned' to Elektra Nashville her situation is no different than any other Warner Bros. artists. The Elektra moniker doesn't really mean anything at all here...it's just a name, a part of WMN. It's not unlike how WMN branded some of their artists (Blake Shelton, Frankie Ballard) as "Reprise Records" artists a few years back. WMN just likes to be confusing, apparently. They don't have a "Warner Bros" promo team and an "Elektra" promo team and an "Atlantic" promo team to go with those 'imprints'. Rather, they have Team WAR and Team WMN, and today they added Team WEA. And the promo teams promote artists regardless of whether they have the Atlantic or Elektra name attached to them. If you take a look at the most recent Billboard chart you'll notice how the label is listed after each song. For example, after "Play It Again" it says Capitol Nashville, and after "This Is How We Roll" it says Republic Nashville. Well, if you find all the WMN artists, it will have the imprint first and then the promo team (and they're basically one in the same for all other labels; the imprints have promo teams). For Brett's "Beat Of The Music", it says 'Atlantic/WMN' after it. That means that the WMN promo team is working that song to radio. Blake Shelton's "My Eyes" is 'Warner Bros./WMN', so the same promo team behind Brett's song is behind Blake's as well. Cole Swindell and Hunter Hayes are also with the WMN team. But then when you get down to Frankie Ballard's "Sunshine & Whiskey" at #32, the label is 'Warner Bros./WAR', meaning that his song is being promoted by the WAR team. Dan + Shay, Charlie Worsham, and Gloriana are also on WAR. Then if you go down to New & Active, where Jana's "Love" is listed, the label is Elektra Nashville/WAR, which means that "Love" is being promoted to radio by the WAR promo team, the same team behind the Dan + Shay and Gloriana singles. It looks like Sheryl Crow's "Shotgun" will be promoted by Team WMN, although I think her last 2 singles were promoted by Team WAR (I'm not completely sure there, though). I really don't know why Warner Music Nashville has designated Jana as an Elektra artist. Really, having the Elektra name doesn't make much sense if there's no promo team tied to the name. With Hunter and Brett it's a little different because they were signed by the Atlantic Records office out of New York (as well as Warner Music Nashville), but Jana's deal is the same as all other WMN artists, however for some reason she's been assigned to the Elektra name whereas the others are all just Warner Bros. Confused? Me too.

That makes a lot of sense to me (FINALLY - i think). That is why Charlie, Gloriana and Jana struggle while Blake and Hunter soar. I guess I always thought they all shared the same promo team. That doesn't leave me clear on how Dan + Shay do so well compared to the other artists on that promo team, though. I guess radio is just giving them a chance, or they have the luxury of being associated with Justin Bieber's management.

I guess radio is just giving them a chance, or they have the luxury of being associated with Justin Bieber's management. Well, to be fair, the WAR promo team did finally score a big breakthrough with Frankie Ballard and getting "Helluva Life" to #1 (and now "Sunshine & Whiskey" is doing quite well also). I think the WMN team having Blake just rubbed off on some of the other projects they were promoting. When they came with singles from Hunter and Brett, obviously radio knew "hey, these are the same guys that are working the red hot Blake Shelton single". Hunter of course took the industry by storm and Brett finally caught on last year. As for Dan + Shay, they have a great unique sound and have sold quite well. They had a hugely impressive radio tour and have also played for a lot of fans, too. I think both WMN promo teams are very strong teams, but it seems that the label likes to have the WAR team work the lesser-established acts.

As long as Warner Bros. can get Jana Kramer and Sheryl Crow to the top ten on a regular basis, I think everyone here in the Country Forum will be happy campers.

I hope Best Night Ever becomes a top ten (hopefully #1) for Gloriana following their top 20 hit, Can't Shake You (#16 in 2012) and their biggest hit, Kissed You Good Night (#2 in 2012). The death knell was sounded for "bro-country" this week.
Watch your trades early next week.
Change is coming... though it will seem small at first, it is big. There will be fallout.

There will be fallout. mus1cr0w The only way bro country is going to be dead is for it to stop selling. That day will come as times always change and the newest fad/sound will take over, but until people stop buying it, it will thrive.
