BABEL'S ON
Mumford & Sons Score Year's Biggest Debut; Green Day, No Doubt, Lupe Fiasco Follow
September 26, 2012
Their banjo keeps strumming, and now Mumford & Sons have the year's biggest chart debut.
The Glassnote Records folk-rockers' new album, Babel, will score a #1 album next week, with a total between 575-625k, besting Justin Bieber's previous best debut of 374k by what could be more than a quarter of a million units.
That's a lot of picking folks, based on one-day sales reports from music retailers both physical, but especially digital, which could amount to nearly three-quarters of the total.
Coming on the heels of front man Billie Joe Armstrong's iHeartRadio Music Festival outburst over the weekend and subsequent trip to rehab, the first of Green Day's three Reprise albums, Uno, will debut with between 150-175k, which supports the notion there is no such thing as bad publicity when it comes to selling records. Call it a punk marketing set-up. Interscope's new No Doubt album, Push and Shove, the Orange County ska-popsters' first in a decade, will do a quite respectable 120-125k in first-week sales. Atlantic hip-hop artist Lupe Fiasco's Food and Liquor II is on target for sales of between 85-95k. Ultra's new release from electronic dance music icon Deadmau5, Album Title Goes Here, should do in the 40-50k range.
Album sales were up 6% vs. last week, up 3% vs. same week last year and down 5% year to date. Track sales were up 3% vs. last week, up 13% vs. same week last year and up 6% year to date. TEA sales were up 5% vs. last week, up 6% vs. same week last year and down 1.5% year to date.

Wow, outstanding! Would be really great if they topped 500k. Should also be a good week for their debut album, which has been selling 10k/week anyway. I expect Jason Aldean, Taylor Swift and One Direction to also open big this fall.

BREAKING GLASS: Based on early sales reports, Mumford & Sons’ new Glassnote album, Babel, is headed for a total that could go as high as 525k, but will certainly top 450k, a lock for #1.

Is Mumford and Sons doing any other promotion this week? I wonder if they can keep raising these projection numbers. Also, they better be getting ready for the Grammys, especially if they sell well the rest of the year.
Green Day has THREE versions of UNO high on the iTunes chart (all three around No. 10 give or take), I wonder how this actually translates into albums sold compared to higher rated albums on the list.

M&S are a great example of a band who sells amazingly well with their breakthrough so it's only obvious that the sophomore effort will open well. 500k is brilliant but not surprising by any means.
It's not guaranteed that Babel will outsell Sigh No More in the long run either.

I'm happy for M&S but also quite surprised tbh. How did that happen? Dissapointed with No Doubt. I expected at least 200k

^The first day estimates for No Doubt, Green Day and Lupe Fiasco are not out yet. The figures above are predictions from the music industry.
200k for No Doubt is very doubtful. It's been 11 years since their last studio album.

Those are really great numbers for Green Day, especially if it gets closer to 175k. Decent for No Doubt... hopefully some of the singles can catch on and it'll be a consistent seller.

Horrible numbers for Lupe. I blame poor promotion. And LASERS was pretty bad.

Honestly, I also think Lupe's album is simply not that good. But yeah, quite the plunge from Laser's opening last year.
WOW @ Mumford & Sons. Well-deserved. Grammys, here they come.
Good enough for Green Day. Kinda blah for No Doubt, considering I don't think the album will have much longevity.

I thought Lupe would hit closer to 150k, but I blame promotion, or lack there of. I had no idea it was out today and Hip-Hop is my genre of choice. Lupe probably hasn't helped himself very much in the popularity department. He seems to rub people the wrong way at the record label.

I don't think much of the industry appreciates him too much either. Kanye doesn't mention him or feature him anymore. He didn't get too many big features on the album. He seems to just not like the spotlight at all.

Wow! Great for Mumford & Sons! Perhaps they will be able to do 1 million WW this week? As it certainly looks like they will have the biggest debut week so far this year in the UK (120k+). :)
