I have tried to view her performances, but she is quite a horrid live singer- it's rather painful to watch. I truly believe that she is naturally no (or just marginally) better as a vocalist than the average person plucked from the street. For example, Miley Cyrus, who I don't care for at all but has a decent voice, did an acoustic cover of 'Sadness' that is light years above Lana's best acoustic live performance. The vocals argument doesn't mean much to the general public though. Look at Katy Perry or the Rihanna of yesteryear. I don't think that would have held her back. If that was all it took for her to bomb, then she wouldn't have done anything after SNL. But 'Summertime Sadness' and 'West Coast' later...

This, exactly, If vocals/live performances were so important, most of the artists smashing right now wouldn't even have careers. Rihanna, Katy, Taylor, etc all have terrible voices, but obviously their appeal/success isn't based on that. It seems like people are always quick to use the "Artist X has a terrible voice, why are they so successful?" as soon as it applies to an artist they don't like. Music history proves it's more about the overall package more so than one single factor, anyway.

Lana doesn't even have a bad voice though. Her tone is unique and instantly recognizable. I watched her live last year and not a single minor error was detected in her singing.

Lana can give decent vocals in smaller settings. This is what I've found.

^^ My comment on Lana was intended to explain why I personally don't care for her as an artist and find her unlistenable live. I don't think that the general public feels either way about her voice as I feel.

I don't think it has much to do with her public perception and I do agree her voice is unique but I don't think I have ever seen a good live performance from her. Her skills as a live performer are even weaker than someone like Katy's which is saying A LOT tbh.

Because they're jealous of her artistic freedom. She's not chasing hits. She stays true to herself, singing about what she feels, about what she experienced in her life. That's what make's her a "different" artist, and different sometimes seems wrong to people. It's better to keep living inside your shells and don't think about, not express what you feel. Don't be yourself. That's why i love Lana! And i really hope she keeps making music forever. Her trajetory reminds me a lot of Marilyn Monroe, a true genius destroyed just because she wants to be free.

I also think that Lana is disliked simply because there are SO MANY WHO REALLY ADORE HER!
My case was like that. When she appeared with Video Games and everybody talked about her Specially in France where Video Games was top 5 hit and huge radio hit I hated her and did not even wanna know about her Though honestly I DID NOT EVEN KNOW WHO SHE WAS But everyone was Lana, Lana, Lana and all possible superlatives
But... Listening to the french radio Video Games got into my head Then Born to Die Then Blue Jeans And the rest is history
Now I consider Lana as the best thing that happened to music in last 10 years
And just to think that I hated her at first ... Stupid me!

??? She's far for being destroyed but... I just think it's a silly comparison, and Marilyn Monroe references are overdone to the point of being meaningless
