Taylor Swift guest hosts this week. It's bad timing, I guess, that she hosts the same week that her song starts dropping. Or, maybe, the producers were a tad optimistic and were hoping that the song would be #1 when her weekend came around. If I were a betting man, I'd say that "I Knew You Were Trouble" will, probably, be played as an extra. We'll find out Saturday.
The chart is, still, a bit behind (guest host and holiday related, I'm sure). I'm hoping for a bit more "catch up" when Ryan returns next week.

The chart is extremely late!!! Like, 3 weeks late now.
I was pleasantly surprised to see "Your Body" only dropping 24-29. I was expecting it to drop in the low 30s. It will most likely be gone next week though :(

Judging from the Mediabase lists, I thought Taylor would be at #2 for a third week but not #1. I'd like to see "Some Nights" hit #1, but that also doesn't look likely. I think next week Maroon 5 get one more week on top, and an 8th week for "One More Night" would make it the longest running AT40 #1 since Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love" in summer 2008. The next #1 will most likely be "Die Young", as I guess it, but unless there's a big "catch up" shift next week I don't foresee a 6-1 jump. Stranger things have happened though...

Iyaz jumped 4-1 on AT40. www.at40.com/top-40/chart/4610"Replay" hit #1 on the January 9, 2010, AT40 after being at #8 on the last previous regular countdown (for December 12, 2009), which may be what he's referring to. However, I don't think that really should count as the chart was supposedly "frozen" for three weeks while year-end and decade-end specials were aired. Under regular movement (if there had been regular AT40s aired during the intervening three weeks) it would likely have made a more gradual move to #1. Also, the charts put up at the AT40 website don't exactly match what Ryan (or a guest host) actually counted down and was played at the time. Those charts are archived in the weekly threads on this board.

Once again, "All I Need Is Love" by Ceelo Green and the Muppets gets shafted from the AT40 chart and all extras - breakout and verge and optional.

Is AT40 the same as Mediabase? AT40 uses the Mediabase no recurrent rule chart for its source with its own tricks or something like that, in the past even starting with the old Casey Kasem/Shadoe Stevens era AT40 used Billboard charts as its source then with the 1998 AT40 revival until Casey's retirement AT40 used Radio and Records charts as its source.

Is AT40 the same as Mediabase? Yes and no. Yes, AT40 uses a chart compiled by Mediabase. No, the chart is not the same as the published (and what we'd consider to be the official) Mediabase chart. The published chart is the chart that we track at All Access (and is published on americasmusiccharts.com and, in print, in USA today). Both charts have different reporting panels. AT40 only uses stations that are AT40 affiliates. The published chart has a much larger panel. The published chart has a recurrent rule (tracks are removed after 20 weeks if below the top 10). AT40 has no recurrent rule. Songs fall off when they fall off.

Only seven extras this week, less than usual, as Taylor spent a lot of time reading and answering letters from fans. Which isn't bad as a one-off or occasional feature for a guest host, but regularly I prefer the recent pattern of more extras and less talk.
There was no 2 for 1 this week, and the opening did not feature the usual recap of last week's top 3. Interestingly, when Taylor was listing some of the alternate titles fans have given for "We Are Never...", she misstated the title of her earlier hit "Love Story" (she said "Love Song".)

We get 3 droppers but all fairly recent songs, so the are still 8 songs in the lower 20 with more than 20 weeks on here. I was surprised that both of Taylor's extras were optional. There was endless promotion of her CD, her next TV appearance, and the New Year's eve show. I thought she did a very good job. She had the staff laughing a lot, which they don't do much anymore for Ryan. And that's a good thing, because it's annoying IMO. She asks listeners to call the fan line with questions and gives out the number. Those who fell for that are probably the same people who think their "votes" get counted each week. I heard part of the Casey Kasem show from '73 today, and marvel at their foresight to keep all the old shows. Maybe in 30 or 40 years we'll be listening to classic Seacrest. Or not. Casey actually announced at the beginning of the show that there was a new #1, so these spoilers are not really new.
