50. Three Days Grace – Chalk Outline“Chalk Outline” is a great heavy active leaning song by one of my favorite Canadian artists “Three Days Grace”. It’s the lead single off their latest record “Transit of Venus”. The song features a heavy bass throughout the song that really emphasizes the hurt felt by the protagonist. With lyrics such as “I've been cold in the crypt , but not as the cold as the words across your lips”, the betrayal discussed by the lead singer really comes across along with the dark blaring production. 49. Scissor Sisters – Only the HorsesWith some help from Calvin Harris, the “Scissor Sisters” released this as their lead single. This infectious bubbly number infuses the dance friendliness of Calvin's production along with some great lyrics: “So we search the sky, for any flashing signs; we’ve gone too far beyond, the border it’s just you and I.” that leads to a very enjoyable listen. 48. Lana Del Rey – Dark Paradise“Dark Paradise” was the catalyst to me getting into Lana’s work. The dark nature of the song coupled with the eerie lyrics somehow managed to intrigue me into listening on. The line that stands out the most for me is: “And there's no remedy for memory your face is like a melody, it won't leave my head”. 47. Nicki Minaj – Right By My Side (feat. Chris Brown)“Right By My Side” is one of the few songs on “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded” where Nicki finds balance between the pop and urban section of the record. The track features one of her best verses to date: “When my pussy game so cold that he always seem to come back, cause he know that it’d be a wrap when I’m riding it from the back. Wait, oh, let me see your phone cause all them bitches is ratchet, and now let me get in my truck, cause all them bitches’ll catch it” and really encompasses what made the masses love her on Pink Friday. 46. Cheryl Cole – Under the SunCheryl’s second single is reminiscent of some of Natasha Bedingfield’s work which really is one of the reasons why I enjoy this track so much. Co-written by Cheryl herself along with Alex da Kid, she shines on this midtempo about getting over a breakup. The intro: “We all get lonely days, Get stuck in a phase; I can see the sun is shining bright right on through the haze” is the lyrical highlight of the song since it really is a good descriptor at bringing forth the sun as a representation of overcoming heartache.

45. Hunter Hayes – WantedHunter really has started to break out in the country world and he also has slowly crept into the pop charts with this gem. I’m sad to say that I only recently discovered his record and it really is a good collection of songs. Hunter’s maturity is clearly evident in his songwriting as he’s been involved in the writing process with each track on the record. On “Wanted”, the final bridge is the lyrical highlight of the song for me: “As good as you make me feel, I wanna make you feel better; better than your fairy tales, better than your best dreams, you're more than everything I need, you’re all I ever wanted.” Other highlights on his self debut album include: “ Cry With You”, “Somebody’s Heartbreak” and “All You Ever”. 44. The Band Perry – Better Dig TwoInitially, “Better Dig Two” felt overwhelming and I criticized it for sounding too much like Carrie Underwood’s hit “Undo It” in the chorus; however, I grew to love the song mostly due to the lyrical content. I personally am a fan of darker themed songs and this one is no exception. The line that grabs me the most throughout the song is “It won't be whiskey, won't be meth; it’ll be your name on my last breath”. 43. JoJo – Demonstrate“Demonstrate” was the shift in artistic direction that really showed JoJo’s growth as an artist. JoJo really demonstrates a more sexy side in this Noah "40" Shebib produced number which is clearly exemplified in this intro of the song: “I live in this fantasy where everything is amplified; senses hiding in a flash and everything just comes alive; this pressure all inside of me, is sexual anxiety”. 42. One Direction – One ThingI never imagined ever considering myself a potential directioner but “One Thing” managed to break hold of my resistance. The get out of my head hook in the chorus is probably the aspect of the song that got me interested in this. Oh and I suppose “Last First Kiss” and “They Don’t Know About Us” deserve a shoutout. ;) 41. Madonna – Masterpiece“Masterpiece” is a brilliant work of art among Madonna’s extensive collection. The chorus: “And I'm right by your side, like a thief in the night I stand in front of a masterpiece. And I, can't tell you why, it hurts so much; to be in love with the masterpiece” and much of the song has some of her best lyrics to date. The melody along with the passionate vocals and lyrics that show Madonna’s talent as a writer really depict a side of Madonna that is not incorporated enough into most of her recent work.

40. Ciara – Sorry“Sorry” really does show off Ciara’s progress as a vocalist. She emits so much passion in this ballad about wanting to rebuild a relationship. You can really feel her sincerity throughout the song and it’s the aspect of the song that really made me love it. 39. Haley Reinhart – Free“Free” has such a nice old school throwback vibe that really compliments Haley’s vocals along with some great lyrics. The lyric that I find the most notable in the song is: “Let it be, let it be just a beautiful memory; anything that starts will have an ending”. This really does emphasize the desire to break free from the relationship and it’s one of the many reasons why this song is great. 38. Cher Lloyd – With Ur Love (feat. Mike Posner)“With Ur Love” was such an infectious summer song for me. It’s filled with repetitive hooks that really show off Cher’s ability to sell you a well crafted pop song. From the “Da da da da dum dum da dum dum” hook in the intro to the “I ain't even here I'm in outer space, like I'm venus your mars in the milky way” section, it oozes with her confident vocals. 37. Beyoncé – Love On TopThis made it to #50 on last year’s year end countdown and it continued its very long run on my playlist throughout the year. Beyoncé’s vocals are absolutely impeccable in the song and the multiple key changes really emphasize her desire to be with the one that puts her love on top. 36. Lana Del Rey – Off to the Races“Off to the Races” is Lana’s highest charting track on the chart for many reasons especially for her cutesy vocals in the chorus. The lyric that’s my personal favorite is: “Because I'm crazy, baby I need you to come here and save me, I'm your little scarlet, starlet singing in the garden, kiss me on my open mouth; ready for you”.

35. Beyoncé– Dance for You“Dance for You” is the epitome of a slow sex urban driven jam. With lyrics such as “Boy look into my eyes, when I'm grinding on you, this is beyond sex; boy I'm high on you, and if it's real then you know how I feel”, the Queen of R&B really puts it out there; she will please her man with her alluring moves. Clocking in over 6 minutes (on the album version), this remains to be one of Beyoncé’s most shocking unofficial radio releases and it’s the passion in her vocals that really make this one of her most adventurous singles to date. 34. The Band Perry – Postcard From ParisKimberly Perry, the lead vocalist really shines on the song and in the video which is one of the many reasons why this is their highest charting track for this year end chart. My favorite lyric in the song is: “But it's the never-knowing that keeps this going and drives me crazy.” 33. Marina & the Diamonds – Power & ControlI am a big fan of the topic of the song; the whole give or take aspect of a relationship makes this song come alive in a very simple but effective way. Lyrically “We give and take a little more, eternal game of tug and war” feels like the whole point of the song, having to constantly compromise in an ongoing relationship. It’s this whole aspect of fighting to get what you want that intrigues me and makes this one of my favorite Marina songs to date. 32. Ellie Goulding – My BloodEllie Goulding really has become one of my favorite current pop artists and this song really does prove how skilled she is as a songwriter. Her unique vocals invoke the dark aspect about having that person that you’re in a relationship sap your blood metaphorically speaking and drain all the love out. It’s a very interesting concept! The most memorable line of the song for me is “Alarms will ring for eternity; the waves will break every chain on me”. 31. Cheryl Cole – Ghetto BabyThis is Cheryl’s highest charting track on this year’s countdown. This Lana Del Rey penned song really has Cheryl putting on a bit of a mask and singing a bit outside of her comfort zone lyrically speaking. The line that really sticks out for me is: “We’re a match made in heaven if they’re gonna talk let ‘em’ if they don’t think we’re good together, baby just forget ‘em”.

30. Carly Rae Jepsen – Call Me Maybe“Call Me Maybe” was essentially the song of the summer and it clearly has one of the most ingenious pop hooks of the year. Originally off the Curiosity EP and now on her debut album “Kiss”, “Call Me Maybe” is now every girl or guy’s cheesy way of asking someone out on a date. If you’re more curious about Carly Rae Jepsen, stay tuned for another song that she has higher up the countdown. 29. Nicki Minaj – Beez In The Trap (feat. 2 Chainz)This was a guilty summer jam for me. Nicki Minaj really delivered on this and 2 Chainz did his thing with his verse. Nicki’s city name dropping verse is easily one of her best to date and it’s clear as night and day why this ended up being the urban hit on “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded”. 28. Miranda Lambert – Over You“Over You” is a heart wrenching ballad written by the happy country couple (Miranda and Blake) about Blake reliving the death of his older brother. The most powerful line in the song would have to be “It really sinks in, you know, when I see it in stone”. It really puts into perspective the death described and really gives the song its climax. Miranda has one song further up the chart. 27. No Doubt – Settle DownNo Doubt finally returned in the music scene after a long 11 year absence and they did not disappoint. I like that Gwen has kept her more rock influenced vocals intact on this track in particular and it really does fit in nicely with some of their past hits. The “I'm a rough and tough, and nothing's gonna knock this girl down” section was stuck in my head this past summer. Look out for one more song from them later on. 26. JoJo – Disaster“Disaster” managed to break my top 100 countdown last year and further improved its position on this year’s countdown. The section of the song that really gets me every time I listen would have to be: “You shot the bullet, you shot the bullet that killed me, not feeling my heart beat, and now I was dying. I am through it, I-I am through all the agony, and now my eyes are drying, trying, no more crying, lying's just a game. So disaster strikes, and I'm alright cause my love's on his way”. It feels like an explosion of sadness with the realization that the relationship involving the singer ended up being a disaster which really is a very unique way of describing it.
