Bruno Mars Sets Pop Songs Record & rewrites BB chart history Mars passes Nelly and Timberlake for the most Pop Songs No. 1s among men. Timberlake, meanwhile, takes over atop Rhythmic. Bruno Mars rewrites Billboard chart history, as "When I Was Your Man" rises 2-1 on the Nielsen BDS-based Pop Songs radio airplay tally. The song marks Mars' sixth No. 1, pushing him past Nelly and Justin Timberlake for the most leaders among solo male artists in the chart's 20-year archives. (Katy Perry and Rihanna lead all acts with nine No. 1s each.) Amazingly, Mars has reached the record since arriving on Pop Songs just more than three years ago. He first charted the week of March 6, 2010, as a guest on B.o.B's "Nothin' on You," which reigned the week of May 22, 2010. Also laudable, he's ruled with five of his six single releases as a lead act. "Just the Way You Are" (three weeks, 2010) and "Grenade" (five, 2011) led from his debut album "Doo-Wops & Hooligans." (Third single "The Lazy Song" reached No. 3). "It Will Rain," from the "Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 1" soundtrack, led the week of Feb. 4, 2012, while "Locked Out of Heaven" (five weeks, 2012-13) preceded "Man" from Mars' second album, and first Billboard 200 No. 1, "Unorthodox Jukebox." Also notable: "Man" is the first piano-and-vocal-only No. 1 in the Pop Songs chart's history. Previously, Adele's "Someone Like You" (No. 2, 2011) had come closest to commanding the chart; still, "Someone" is the only such No. 1 in the Billboard Hot 100's 54-year archives. www.billboard.com/articles/co...-tops-rhythmic

I was just gonna ask when the last time a straight up piano ballad went #1 on pop. Apparently never! Wow, and now we have Stay to likely usurp this.

But this was released first as a trance song. Wikipedia says this is the album version, the acoustic version was released later and got substantial airplay, but I definitely heard this version on the radio way more often.

Nah, the Roxette version obviously has other instruments (and was a #1 before Billboard's pop chart came out, anyway). And yeah I'm aware of that but most U.S. stations played the candlelight version so I say it counts

I'm glad they're pushing this for #1; its a great song.
Do discounts have the same negative effects on a single's sales as do remixes that cause the song to peak prematurely in sales after the week its been discounted?

I hate discounts to get number 1 hits. But the label should have waited one more week right? I mean, Bruno now has bigger airplay but loses on streaming and Youtube right? By how much he'd need to outsell M&RL to get that number 1? 50/60k?

Funny cause I've never herd this version until now. They've only ever played the dance version of this on Z100/KTU, so I wouldn't count this.

1 1 BRUNO MARS When I Was Your Man 15768 14781 987 103.360 Spin record: 16014 SPS record: 96.470 171 stations x 96.470 SPS = 16497 spins needed to break the record. That's 729 spins away still. To break the spin record, though, it needs only 247 more spins. That was when there were only 166 stations, hence the more spins for the SPS record.

This song reminds me of a Billy Joel song from the 1970's, and not in a bad way.

I thought Listen To Your heart was played as both the dance version and ballad version on top 40? I know I heard both. That's why I think it doesn't count.
