didn't Tim McGraw use to have big sales? has he declined in sales? I've always thought he was a modern country force. (Please don't regard me as the declining sales poster, I'm just mentioning things that bother me)

Tim did used to sell a lot more but his record label (Curb) really hurt him over the last 4-5 years by releasing terrible singles and essentially taking control of his career. He finally won his court decision against them and this is his first album with Big Machine. Curb was forced to release the album Emotional Traffic in January 2012 and if memory serves me correctly, that album opened with 68k.
Basically, with the way his former label was treating him post-2004, he started slipping down the ranks at country radio which consequentially led to dwindling tour numbers in addition to lower sales and less airplay. But he's started to make a comeback in the last 1-2 years and it's in full swing now. I was hoping he could sell at least 120k but if he can hit 100k, I'll be happy with that.
Oh, another thing...Curb has released like 6-7 hits packages for Tim in the last...uh, 6-7ish years. That also really hurt him.

^But, his label did not support/promote it. They just threw it out there. I think the 1st single missed the Top 10 at country radio. The first single was supposed to be "Felt Good On My Lips" and that one was a mega-hit on country radio, spending 3 weeks at #1 in January of 2011, and the album was supposed to have been released in November or December or 2010. But instead, Curb tacked FGOML on to a hits package called "Number One Hits" that came out November 30, 2010 (when the studio album was supposed to be out). All of the songs on the #1 hits compilation had been released, re-released, and re-released again so many times before. It was the 6th hits package of Tim's that Curb released since March 2006. After FGOML peaked, the lawsuits came out...Curb first sued Tim, saying he broke contract, and then Tim and his lawyers counter-sued. Tim's contentious relationship with the label had been public knowledge for a long time but it was especially obvious in late 2010/early 2011 that things were getting worse. And then it was also officially stated by Tim that Curb was hanging on to Emotional Traffic...they had shelved it, with Tim saying it's because it was the last album on his contract with them, and they were delaying it's release as long as possible (and what Tim said was the truth). Then in March 2011, Curb released a single, "Me And Tennessee", from the Country Strong soundtrack, which was a duet with Gwyneth Paltrow. It was obvious they were stalling. They never really promoted that song to radio and it stalled in the 30's on the chart, becoming his lowest peaking single since 1993 just before he broke on to the scene. Finally, in late November 2011 after nearly the whole year off the airwaves (wasting the momentum from when FGOML was a huge hit in January), Tim won the lawsuit against Curb, and the label was required to put the album out. They did so in January 2012 and tacked FGOML back on to the album. They even released a single (I guess as an apparent 'good gesture'), "Better Than I Used To Be", that wound up serving as the 'lead' single. BTIUTB hit radio the 1st of December but the adds date was January 3rd so I think it was only just hitting top 30 when the album dropped in late January. Curb at least got it up to the top 5 in the spring and that's when Tim signed with Big Machine. Curb kept trying to find loopholes in court but the courts keep siding with Tim and ruled he did not break any laws by signing with a new label. In the meantime, Curb has released 2 more singles since last June. The first of those was from the Emotional Traffic album, and now they released a few-years-old duet track from Tim McGraw & Friends, another hits compilation that Curb put out just a couple weeks ago (I think the physical copy was Wal-mart exclusive but I know it was available on iTunes & Amazon). But since Tim's on a new label now, radio basically ignored Curb's promo people. Neither single cracked the top 50 on the Mediabase chart, while both his Big Machine singles have gone top 10 and he's closing in on #1 with his current single.

Thanks for taking the time to write an elaborate answer. It annoys me when labels do that. Eve, Jojo and others who face this kind of situation - are basically screwed, and it takes years to finally break free from the labels hold of them. I'm glad Tim won, and I think that signing to Big Machine is a great thing. It is Taylor Swift's label after all! what a nice compensation. They'll take a good care of him.

Tim's last "real" studio album was 2009's Southern Voice. It debuted with 137k.

GRAMMY FEVER, SALES-PREDICTION AMBIGUITY EDITION: This week's midweek chart is expanded a bit and builds in a lot of speculation about who will get digital lifts from their Grammy performances this weekend. While this is based on historical sales trends and each title's sales base going into the weekend, please expect a greater than usual margin of error. Here's how things look with the Grammy weekend looming:
* Josh Groban (Reprise) 135-145k * Tim McGraw (Big Machine) 95-105k * Now 45 (Capitol) 80-90k Mumford & Sons (Glassnote) 70-80k Lumineers (Dualtone) 60-70k Justin Bieber (Island/IDJ) 45-50k Bruno Mars (Atlantic) 40-45k Taylor Swift (Big Machine) 40-45k 2013 Grammy Nominees (Capitol) 35-40k Andrea Bocelli (Verve) 35-40k * Red (Provident) 35-40k * Coheed and Cambria (Everything Evil/Hundred Handed) 30-35k Pitch Perfect (UMe) 27-30k Rihanna (Def Jam/IDJ) 27-30k * Joe Budden (eOne) 27-30k Gary Allan (MCA Nashville) 24-27k Fun (Fueled By Ramen) 22-25k Ed Sheeran (New Elektra) 22-25k Kidz Bop Kids (Razor & Tie) 20-23k Hunter Hayes (Atlantic) 20-23k Frank Ocean (Def Jam/IDJ) 20-23k Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (Macklemore) 20-23k
* Debuts
Speaking of ambiguity, if you're planning to stride across the red carpet on Grammy night, please consult CBS' memo regarding the avoidance of nipples, butt cracks and thong-like costumes. (2/7p)

No, and I thought Love Songs by DC would had gone at least top 40!
Although she should've had a new song out to make the most of the Super Bowl anyway.

www1.billboard.biz/bbbiz/photos/pdf/2013/current.pdfGrammys Spur Early Sales Gains for Mumford & Sons, Lumineers , Frank Ocean While official numbers aren’t in yet, sources suggest that some of the biggest sales winners from the Grammy Awards on Feb. 10 include Mumford & Sons, the Lumineers, Frank Ocean, Rihanna and fun. Music sales for the week ending Feb. 10, as tracked by Nielsen SoundScan, will not be released until Wednesday morning (Feb. 13). However, label sources have indicated that a number of albums and songs are due for big gains when the figures come out. Among the albums heading for a gain of 50% of more compared to the previous week are album of the year winner “Babel” by Mumford & Sons, fun.’s “Some Nights,” the Black Keys’ “El Camino,” Frank Ocean’s “Channel Orange,” Miguel’s “Kaleidoscope Dream,” Jack White’s “Blunderbuss,” and Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger.” Of those, the largest percentage gain might belong to Ocean’s set, which could post a jump of 120%. A week ago, “Channel Orange” moved 5,000 copies, according to Sound- Scan. So it might have jumped to 11,000 in the week ending Sunday. “Babel” looks to be the largest seller for the week overall, as it’s on course to move around 55,000. That would be a jump of 50% compared to the previous frame, when it shifted 36,000. All of these albums will likely have an even bigger gain next week (ending Feb. 17), when a full week’s worth of post-Grammys impact will be felt. This week’s charts will only ref lect sales generated in the hours during and after the show, through the end of Sunday night. In terms of digital songs, the largest seller of the songs performed on the show could be the Lumineers’ “Ho Hey.” Forecasters suggest that it sold 140,000 in the week ending Feb. 10. That could translate to a 17% increase for the sales week. However, “Ho Hey” is a current hit, so thus it was already selling well -- and had perhaps little room to grow. It might be more interesting to look at those songs that will have the largest percentage increases in sales. Right now, those are looking like Rihanna’s new single “Stay” (featuring Mikky Ekko) and Miguel’s “Adorn.” Both should gain by more than 200% in the week ending Feb. 10, with “Stay” selling perhaps 65,000 and “Adorn” moving 40,000. For the latter tune, which was released last August as a single, it will mark the song’s best sales week yet. Also aiming for big increases are Mumford & Sons’ “I Will Wait” (up more than 100% to 48,000), fun.’s “Carry On” (up 131% to 60,000) and “We Are Young” (up 150% to 50,000). “Wait” and “Carry” were both performed on the show, while “We Are Young” won the Grammy Award for best song. –Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles

A #1 for Groban is a first for a debut week for one of his albums. Although both Noel and Closer eventually went to #1. So congratulations to him!

Just realised that Groban has sold approximately 20 million albums in the US alone.
