Bon Jovi Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200, David Bowie at No. 2 By Keith Caulfield | March 19, 2013
Bon Jovi scores its fifth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart as "What About Now" debuts with 96,000 sold in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's the act's third straight studio album to debut at No. 1, following "The Circle" (2009) and "Lost Highway" (2007). They previously claimed No. 1s with "New Jersey" (1988) and "Slippery When Wet" (1986).
The veteran band beats the also-debuting David Bowie, who arrives at a career-high No. 2 with "The Next Day," selling 85,000. The rock legend's new album -- his first studio set since 2003 -- earns his largest sales week for an album since SoundScan started tracking data in 1991. (Bowie's previous best SoundScan-era sales frame came when 2002's "Heathen" started with 55,000 at No. 14.)
"The Next Day" is Bowie's seventh top 10 album. He last logged a top 10 way back in 1983 with the No. 4-peaking "Let's Dance." Until this week, Bowie's highest-charting album had been 1976's "Station to Station," which spent two weeks at No. 3.
The full top 10 of the Billboard 200 will be revealed on Wednesday, March 20.
A week ago, we reported that industry sources were forecasting a possible race for No. 1 between Bon Jovi and Bowie. While at first it seemed like Bowie had a shot for the top of the tally, based in part on his album's strong digital sales, ultimately Bon Jovi pulled ahead as the week progressed. Bon Jovi's album profited from weekend CD purchases at big box stores like Walmart and Target.
In terms of downloads, Bowie's album was the stronger seller. It moved 41,000 digital copies and was the top selling digital album last week. 48% of Bowie's overall first-week were downloads. As for Bon Jovi's album, it moved 34,000 downloads -- 36% of its debut.
Though Bon Jovi does claim its fifth No. 1, it does so with its smallest debut sales week for a studio set since 1995. "What About Now's" opening sum of 96,000 is the band's lowest start since 1995's "These Days" entered with 73,000 at No. 9.
The act's two previous studio releases -- 2009's "The Circle" and 2007's "Lost Highway" -- both entered at No. 1 with 163,000 and 292,000, respectively.

NOTE: No. 1 tally now reported as 101,000. www.billboard.com/articles/news/1552565/bon-jovi-david-bowie-lead-six-top-10-debuts-on-billboard-200Bon Jovi, David Bowie Lead Six Top 10 Debuts on Billboard 200By Keith Caulfield, L.A. | March 20, 2013 The Billboard 200 albums chart welcomes six debuts into its top 10 this week, led by Bon Jovi at No. 1 with its fifth chart-topper: "What About Now." It's the most top 10 debuts the chart has seen in four months. The last time there were more in a week was the Dec. 1, 2012 chart, when seven arrivals hit the region. That week, One Direction's "Take Me Home" led the debut pack, starting at No. 1. As reported yesterday (March 19), Bon Jovi nets its fifth No. 1 album with "What About Now," selling 101,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's the act's third straight studio album to reach No. 1, but the group's smallest sales start for a studio set since 1995 (when "These Days" launched with 73,000 at No. 9). "What About Now" is also Bon Jovi's 12th top 10 album. All of the act's studio sets since 1986's No. 1 "Slippery When Wet" have reached the top 10. In the runner-up slot this week, rock legend David Bowie tallies his highest-charting album ever, as "The Next Day" starts at No. 2 with 85,000. That figure is also Bowie's best sales week since SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991. "The Next Day" is Bowie's first studio album since 2003, and it marks his seventh top 10. Bowie last logged a top 10 way back in 1983 with the No. 4-peaking "Let's Dance." Until this week, Bowie's highest-charting album had been 1976's "Station to Station," which spent two weeks at No. 3. Last week's No. 1, Luke Bryan's "Spring Break . . . Here to Party," falls to No. 3 with 61,000 (down 59%). At No. 4 is the debuting "Passion: Let the Future Begin" live album with 48,000 sold. Culled from the 2013 Passion Conference in January at Atlanta's Georgia Dome, the Christian album saw a significant chunk of its sales driven by pre-orders placed at the conference. The annual Passion event attracted 60,000 attendees this year and featured Passion worship leaders -- and recording stars -- Chris Tomlin, Kristian Stanfill and Matt Redman, among others. Those acts, and more, appear on the new Passion set. Bruno Mars' "Unorthodox Jukebox" slips 3-5 with 43,000 (down 17%) while R&B vocal group Mindless Behavior starts at No. 6 with "All Around the World" (37,000). The latter act's album is the quartet's second studio effort, and follows "#1 Girl," which debuted and peaked at No. 7 in 2011 with a 36,000 start. Eric Clapton's new "Old Sock" bows at No. 7 with almost 37,000 as well, trailing Mindless Behavior by a tiny margin. The new album is on Clapton's own imprint, Bushbranch Records, through Surfdog Records. It's Clapton's first album after a nearly 30-year run with Warner Bros. and Reprise Records. His new album is still in the Warner Music Group family though, as it is distributed by Warner's indie arm, Alternative Distribution Alliance. In turn, "Old Sock" also debuts at No. 1 on the Independent Albums chart. The soundtrack to Dave Grohl's "Sound City" documentary, dubbed "Sound City - Real to Reel," debuts at No. 8 with almost 37,000 as well. (A relative handful of units separates Nos. 6-8 this week on the chart.) The album features an all-star roster of talent, including Grohl, Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks and Trent Reznor. Mumford & Sons' "Babel" falls 4-9 with 31,000 (down 13%) and Jimi Hendrix's "People, Hell and Angels" tumbles 2-10 with 30,000 (down 58%). Over on the Digital Songs chart, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop" rules for a tenth week at No. 1, selling 270,000 downloads (down 12%). At No. 2 again this week is Bruno Mars' "When I Was Your Man," which moves 230,000 (down 4%). Rihanna's "Stay," featuring Mikky Ekko, holds at No. 3 with 222,000 (down 6%) while Justin Timberlake's "Suit & Tie," featuring Jay-Z, jumps 5-4 with 201,000 (up 33%). The song profits from its performance on "Saturday Night Live" (March 9) and Timberlake's week-long stint on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" (March 11-15). Timberlake's latest single, "Mirrors," sails 48-8 with 121,000 (up 205%). "Mirrors" was also performed on "SNL." As for the rest of the top 10, P!nk's "Just Give Me a Reason," featuring Nate Ruess, zips 8-5 with 171,000 (up 40%). Baauer's "Harlem Shake" slides 4-6 with 146,000 (down 22%), Pitbull's "Feel This Moment" (featuring Christina Aguilera) is steady at No. 7 with 136,000 (up 8%), Drake's "Started From the Bottom" falls 6-9 with 118,000 (down 8%) and Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive" dips 9-10 with 102,000 (down 8%). Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending March 17) totaled 5.57 million units, up 2% compared with the sum last week (5.49 million) and down 1% compared with the comparable sales week of 2012 (5.64 million). Year to date album sales stand at 61.42 million, down 7% compared to the same total at this point last year (66.21 million). Digital track sales this past week totaled 24.57 million downloads, down 3% compared with last week (25.44 million) and down 3% stacked next to the comparable week of 2012 (25.22 million). Year to date track sales are at 303.40 million, down 2% compared to the same total at this point last year (309.02 million). Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2012 when: the "Hunger Games" soundtrack debuted at No. 1 with 175,000 while the Shins' "Port of Morrow" bowed at No. 3 with 74,000.

music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/week-ending-march-17-2013-albums-bon-jovi-151421178.html#more-4535Week Ending March 17, 2013. Albums: Bon Jovi Bests Bowie David Bowieβs The Next Day enters The Billboard 200 at #2, becoming the rock iconβs highest-charting album to date. It tops Station To Station, which peaked at #3 in February 1976. Even so, it was no match for Bon Joviβs What About Now, which debuts at #1. Itβs the bandβs fifth #1 album. Bowie is one of the most celebrated artists of the rock era. He made the cover of TIME in 1983, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. Bon Jovi hasnβt received any of those accolades. The band just sells albums (and concert tickets) year in and year out. What About Now is the bandβs third consecutive studio album to hit #1. It follows 2007βs Lost Highway and 2009βs The Circle. This marks the first time that the band has hit #1 with three consecutive studio albums. Bon Jovi is the third act from New Jersey to amass five or more #1 albums. The band trails Bruce Springsteen, who has had 10 #1 albums between 1980 and 2012, and Frank Sinatra, who had six between 1946 and 1966. Whitney Houston is in fourth place. She had four #1 albums between 1986 and 2009. (Bon Jovi, which demonstrated its state pride by titling its 1988 album New Jersey, is from Sayreville, N.J. Springsteen was born in Freehold, Sinatra in Hoboken and Houston in Newark.) This marks the second time that Bon Jovi has annoyed rock critics by debuting at #1 ahead of a critically-lauded act. Lost Highway debuted at #1 in June 2007, beating out the White Stripesβ Icky Thump, which debuted and peaked at #2. Bon Jovi must be glad it released its album when it did. Next week, Justin Timberlakeβs The 20/20 Experience is a lock to debut at #1 with first-week sales in the 600K rangeβabout six times what What About Now sold in its first week. The Next Day is Bowieβs first studio album in nearly 10 years. Bowie first charted in April 1972 with Hunky Dory. He first cracked the top 40 in March 1973 with Space Oddity. He first reached the top 10 in July 1974 with Diamond Dogs. Assuming this is also its peak, Bowie has now peaked at every position in the top fiveβexcept #1. His aforementioned 1976 album Station To Station hit #3, his 1983 album Letβs Dance peaked at #4. His 1974 hit Diamond Dogs reached #5. The Next Day sold 41K digital copies, which put it at #1 on Top Digital Albums. What About Now sold 34K digital copies, to rank #2. Itβs rare that an older act (Bon Jovi first charted in 1984, 12 years after Bowie) sells better in the digital sphere. davThe Next Day debuts at #1 on The Official U.K. Album chart. Itβs Bowieβs ninth #1 album in his home country; his first since Black Tie White Noise in April 1993. Bowie first topped the U.K. chart in May 1973 with Aladdin Sane, giving him a nearly 40 year span of U.K. #1 albums. (What About Now debuted at #2 in the U.K., which means both countries favored their native born acts.) Luke Bryanβs Spring Breakβ¦Here To Party drops from #1 to #3 in its second week. Itβs #1 on Top Country Albums for the second week. Bryanβs previous album, Tailgates & Tanlines, logged four weeks at #1 on the country chart. Two Various Artists albums debut in this weekβs top 10. Passion: Let The Future Begin opens at #4. The live album was recorded at the 2013 Passion Conference, an evangelical gathering, in Atlanta. The album features tracks by such Contemporary Christian stars as Chris Tomlin, Kristian Stanfill and Matt Redman. The Sound CityβReal To Reel soundtrack debuts at #8. Dave Grohl directed the documentary about Sound City, which was a top recording studio in Van Nuys, Calif. for four decades. Dozens of top 10 albums were recorded there, from Neil Youngβs After The Gold Rush (1970) to Mastodonβs The Hunter (2011). Grohl also co-wrote all the songs on the album and performs them in collaboration with such stars as Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, Trent Reznor and Rick Springfield. The album also debuts at #1 on Top Soundtracks, displacing Pitch Perfect. Incidentally, this isnβt the first album titled Real To Reel to chart. Tesla took an album with that title to #48 in June 2007. Sound CityβReal To Reel is also #1 on this weekβs Top Music Videos chart. The video sold 12K copies this week, which constitutes the biggest one-week total so far this year. Mindless Behaviorβs All Around The World debuts at #6. Itβs the R&B teen groupβs second top 10 album. #1 Girl reached #7 in 2011. Eric Claptonβs Old Sock debuts at #7. Itβs the rock legendβs 19th top 10 album, counting four albums with Cream, one with Blind Faith and a 2000 collabo with B.B. King. Clapton first reached the top 10 in January 1968 with Creamβs Disraeli Gears. He first made it on his own in June 1972 with History Of Eric Clapton. Mumford & Sonsβ Babel drops from #4 to #9. This is its 19th week in the top 10, which equals the mark set by the groupβs previous album, Sigh No More. Will Babel surpass its predecessor next week? Stay tuned. Jimi Hendrixβs People, Hell And Angels drops from #2 to #10 in its second week. This marks the first time that Clapton and Hendrix, two of the most celebrated guitarists in rock history, have appeared in the top 10 together since Oct. 11, 1969, when Clapton was represented by Blind Faith and Best Of Cream and Hendrix was represented by Smash Hits. These legends first appeared in the top 10 together on Feb. 24, 1968 when Clapton was represented by Creamβs Disraeli Gears and Hendrix had both Axis: Bold As Love and Are You Experienced? Hendrix was born in 1942 in Seattle. Clapton was born in 1945 in Ripley, Surrey, England. βThrift Shopβ by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz sold 270K copies, which puts it at #1 on Hot Digital Songs for the 10th straight week. Itβs the first song to top the digital sales chart for 10 weeks since the Black Eyed Peasβ βI Gotta Feelingβ in 2009. Itβs the first song to remain #1 for 10 consecutive weeks since the Peasβ previous hit, βBoom Boom Pow.β Both of those Peas hits also had long runs at #1 on the Hot 100. βBoom Boom Powβ stayed on top for 12 weeks; βI Gotta Feelingβ for 14. But βThrift Shopβ has had just four weeks at #1 on the Hot 100. Will it return to #1 this week or will it rank behind Baauerβs βHarlem Shakeβ for the fifth straight week? Youβll find out later today when we post Chart Watch: Songs. Hereβs the low-down on this weekβs top 10 albums. The Top Five: Bon Joviβs What About Now debuts at #1 (96K). Itβs the bandβs 13th top 10 album (counting a solo project by Jon Bon Jovi)β¦David Bowieβs The Next Day debuts at #2 85K). Itβs his seventh top 10 albumβ¦Luke Bryanβs Spring Breakβ¦Here To Party drops from #1 to #3 in its second week (61K)β¦ Passion: Let The Future Begin debuts at #4 (48K)...Bruno Marsβ Unorthodox Jukebox drops from #3 to #5 in its 14th week (43K). It has been in the top 10 the entire time. The Second Five: Mindless Behaviorβs All Around The World debuts at #6 (37K). Itβs the boy bandβs second top 10 albumβ¦Eric Claptonβs Old Sock debuts at #7 (37K). Itβs the 19th top 10 album of his careerβ¦The Sound CityβReal To Reel soundtrack debuts at #8 (37K)β¦ Mumford & Sonsβ Babel drops from #4 to #9 its 25th week (31K). This is its 19th week in the top 10β¦ Jimi Hendrixβs People, Hell And Angels drops from #2 to #10 in its second week (30K). Imagine Dragonsβ Night Visions drops from #8 to #12. The album tops the 500K mark in digital sales this week. Itβs the 42nd album to sell 500K digital copies. Digital represents the lionβs share of the overall sales for Night Visions. The album has sold 684K total copies to date. Five other albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Macklemore & Ryan Lewisβ The Heist drops from #5 to #17. Rihannaβs Unapologetic drops from #6 to #13. Florida Georgia Lineβs Hereβs To The Good Times drops from #7 to #14. Now 45 drops from #9 to #15. The Lumineersβ The Lumineers drops from #10 to #19. Chicagoβs 2002 compilation The Very Best Of: Only The Beginning re-enters the chart at #20. It was one of several albums boosted by a $1.99 one-day sale at Amazon MP3. This represents a new peak for the album, which originally peaked at #38. Chicago first cracked the top 20 in July 1969 with Chicago Transit Authority (which spawned βBeginningsβ). This compilation is #1 on Top Catalog Albums, displacing Bruno Marsβ Doo-Wops & Hooligans. The Amazon MP3 sale boosted several other compilations this week. Rod Stewartβs The Definitive Rod Stewart re-enters at #21, followed by Playlist: The Very Best β80s Radio Hits at #32, Billy Joelβs The Very Best Of Billy Joel at #34, Simon & Garfunkelβs Simon And Garfunkelβs Greatest Hits at #42, Elvis Presleyβs Elvis 75 at #44 and Billboard #1βs: Classic Country at #48. lTwo Los Angeles bands achieve sales milestones this week. Linkin Parkβs 2003 sophomore album Meteora tops the 6 million mark. Itβs the bandβs second album to reach this mark. Hybrid Theory has sold 10,063,000 copiesβ¦Van Halen tops the 20 million mark in Nielsen SoundScan era sales. The band sold many millions more albums between the release of its debut album in 1978 and the inception of the Nielsen SoundScan era in 1991. Coming Attractions: As noted above, Justin Timberlakeβs The 20/20 Experience will debut at #1 next week with sales in the 600K range. Also due: Kacey Musgravesβ Same Trailer Different Park, Brian McKnightβs More Than Words, Clutchβs Earth Rocker, will.i.amβs #Willpower, Fantasiaβs Side Effects Of You, Anthraxβs Anthems and Walk Off The Earthβs R.E.V.O.

Eric Clapton 13 "Old Sock" *new* Are you not counting the collaboration album with B.B. King? If that's out, then 13 is a good number, but, otherwise, based on the Grein piece, if you count that album for each artist, it's 14.

^I have no idea where I got Clapton's 12. It could be Joel Whitburn, Paul Grein or Billboard. I have to do some research.

Wow, when was the last time the top 10 albums were all male-dominated acts and the median age was 50!!!! That is interesting. Coupled with the mostly male-dominated Hot 100 top 10, I almost wonder if people are being to tire of the diva/female dominated pop scene of the last five+ years?

The majority of the female Pop stars all released around the same time & they currently don't have a song or album really charting.

Chart Moves: Ed Sheeran Hits Half-Million Sales Mark News /
By Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | March 22, 2013 9:00 PM EDT
This past week on the Billboard 200, it was all about the not-quite showdown between Bon Jovi and David Bowie. Bon Jovi logged its fifth No. 1 with the debut of "What About Now," while Bowie notched his highest charting album ever as "The Next Day" started at No. 2. The albums sold 101,000 and 85,000, respectively, in their first weeks. Outside of the top 10, there were some movers and shakers. Let's take a closer look at some of them⦠-- Ed Sheeran: Arguably one of the biggest breakout stars of the past year, Ed Sheeran sees his debut album, "+," cruise past the 500,000 sales mark this week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The set, which debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 exactly 40 weeks ago, sold another 16,000 copies this week (up 85%), rising 51-24 on the chart. Its large gain was caused by sale pricing at Amazon MP3, which marked down the title to $1.99 for one day, March 15. The album's single "The A Team" was first a hit on the Triple A radio chart in April of 2012, eventually rising to a No. 3 peak in July. By September, the song had crossed over to top 40 radio, debuting at No. 37 on Mainstream Top 40 on Sept. 15. It slowly climbed its way to a No. 9 peak in January and February earlier this year. Its top 10 ranking at top 40 conveniently coincided with Sheeran's exposure on the Feb. 10 Grammy Awards, where he was nominated and performed on the show. Sheeran is currently on tour with Taylor Swift through September. -- Phillip Phillips: The most recent "American Idol" winner performed on the "Idol" stage on March 14, thus sparking a 90% sales gain for his "The World From the Side of the Moon" album. It rallies 33-18 with 20,000 sold, marking its best sales week since the chart dated Feb. 2 (25,000). -- Chicago: The band's "The Very Best of Chicago: Only the Beginning" returns to the list at No. 20 with a 2,689% gain after Amazon MP3 sale priced the set for $1.99 on March 15. It's the highest ranking for group since April 1985, when "17" closed out a six-month run in the top 20. Many other titles gain on the chart this week thanks to the $1.99 pricing, including Nos. 21, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 42, 44, 48 and 54. -- "The Walking Dead" soundtrack: After an early release on March 16, the soundtrack to the hit AMC TV show debuts at No. 92 with 6,000 and a No. 6 entry on Soundtrack Albums. The album may see a gain next week, after a full week's worth of sales have kicked in. -- Megan Hilty: The co-star of NBC's "Smash" sees her debut album, "It Happens All the Time," take a bow at No. 96 with 5,000 sold. Forty-eight percent of the title's first week were download sales, while 10% of its overall debut week were from New York City. That's fitting, since the actress/singer has starred on Broadway in both "9 to 5" and "Wicked." -- Flogging Molly: The band's "Drunken Lullabies" album makes its annual return to the chart (re-entering at No. 144), following sales generated by the St. Patrick's Day holiday (March 17). The Celtic punk rock band's set shifted 4,000 last week (up 391%) for its best frame since⦠St. Patrick's Day week 2012! (It sold a few hundred more that week.) -- The Drifters: After almost 45 years, the vocal group returns to the chart with "All-Time Greatest Hits" (No. 199 with 3,000; up 4%) after continued promotion at mass merchants. The act was last on the chart in the spring of 1968 with the No. 122-peaking the Drifters' Golden Hits

David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Jimmi Hendrix and Bon Jovi are all in the top 10 at the same time. All older artists who got their start in the 80s or before.
In othr older artist news, The Drifters return to the BB200 for the first time since 1968
