"Love Somebody" is the next challenger at pop, but even that's 5,000+ spins out of the top slot. Guess it depends on how swift the decline for BL is (when it happens).

Love that this is smashing, so crazy to watch!
I will tear up when/if this breaks Mariah's 212 record. :(

If this hits No. 1 on five radio formats- has that happened in recent times? "We Belong Together," I believe, reached No. 1 at four: pop, rhythmic, mainstream urban and Adult R&B.

Has there ever been an R&B song that topped AC before? Plenty. This is hardly the first. :kii:

The career trajectory of this guy has been nothing short of confounding. He started out just over ten (!) years ago with "When I Get You Alone", a song that barely scraped the Pop chart at all (it spent two weeks at #49), and basically treading on his father's name.
This period of basically nothing happening for him went on for the next four full years, until 2007. By this point, in his mind, Robin was facing The End of his career, fearful that the video for his forthcoming release "Lost Without U" would be his last (he stated as such in an MTV interview at the time). What happened? It became his breakthrough hit, and the biggest R&B hit of the entire year.
The next five full years then go by. Things were a little more comfortable for him now despite no MAJOR hits, though he did score a second #1 R&B hit with 2010's "Sex Therapy". But for the most part, it was more of a cool-down period for him once again.
And now...this song happens, a national chart-topper - and as a monstrous hit, one with quite a chance to be the year's biggest overall.
Anyone want to take a stab at explaining how things have been able to just work themselves out like this for him?

We've been discussing this over here, but Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" is most likely the last song to have hit #1 on 6 formats. If "WBT" were out today, my guess is it would have also hit #1 on Hot AC and AC to match "BOBD"'s feat. Robin's track is a little too funky to challenge for the top spot on AC.

WBT's kind of balladry hasn't been all that popular in recent times, so not sure if would have fared any better on AC formats than it did in 2005.
Agreed, that BL is too funky to get to the top spot on AC.

Seems a bunch of parodies are now popping up for this. Who ever doubted this as the "Song of the number"?

Well he has a major banner on the main iTunes page so there has to just be a glitch or something. I am sure it will be sorted out soon enough. They also have song #6 listed twice on the album. Somebody just messed up.

Somebody just messed up. Bizarre. BL is not even listed on the album, which is now listed as "partial album." No problems on AmazonMP3. Weird.

It really isn't that baffling to me. I think everyone is just over-complicating it. The same reason it's doing so well is the same reason it's such a multi-format hit. It appeals to many many different demographics. Age, sex, race...whatever, it appeals to all of them by not being too much of one thing. It's a bit pop, a bit R&B, a bit funk, a little throwback, a little modern. It has a very blatant hybrid of kitsch and cool while being extremely catchy and a lot of fun. It's Summer, people like fun. A sense of humor goes a long way, especially with a fairly unique juxtaposition of hip hop and R&B stars (who are traditionally take themselves very seriously) acting like clowns. Not to mention it has a video which is become a phenomenon in itself through equal parts parody and controversy.

I don't get the outrage over the success of the song. It's way better than most big hits of the last 15 years

He was basically an Urban AC artist with the occasional Urban hit for the past several years. Many of the songs on his new album are much more mainstream than anything he's recorded in the past, so it's not really that surprising that he's having his mainstream breakthrough this far into his career.

Why'd they make the song available only if you download the entire album on iTunes?

Why'd they make the song available only if you download the entire album on iTunes? Because this probably already sold 300-400k copies this week, so they'd rather focus on getting more album sales.
