I don't think many of us thought "Roar" would have the level of impact/success it's had. The initial reaction, while generally good, wasn't overwhelming. However, it's the type of song that resonates more with each listen, and it's impossible not to relate to. Heck, I'm not even burned out on it yet.

Song, US Sales (millions) Firework, 6.4 E.T., 5.6 California Gurls, 5.5 Hot N Cold, 5.4 Teenage Dream, 4.5 I Kissed A Girl, 4.4 Roar, 4.1 Last Friday Night, 3.4 Wide Awake, 3.1 Part of Me, 2.7 The One That Got Away, 2.7 Waking Up In Vegas, 2.2 Thinking of You, 1.1 Dark Horse, 1.0 Unconditionally, 0.5
Already her 7th best-selling US single after 4.5 months. Will pass IKAG and TD with ease. Could it pass HNC, CG, and ET by the end of 2014?

Is "ET"'s recurrent play and sales that high compared to the other top sellers? I know it had mammoth sales and airplay at the time but I feel like it's been overshadowed by many of the other singles.
It's quite an accomplishment that even her biggest "bomb" ("Thinking of You") has passed the 1m mark. I'm sure "Unconditionally" will do the same in just a couple of months or less.

Last time I checked, it had the second most recurrent pop airplay of all the TD singles, behind the title track.

Artists can of course have multiple career defining songs. "Firework" is undoubtedly one for Katy, then I feel like "Roar" will be another one. We should throw maybe "California Gurls" and/or one of the huge OOTB's huge hits in the equation. I think E.T. was a career defining song as well. Also don't forget Teenage Dream.

It's one of my favorites from the era, loved the solo version before the single release, but it's for sure not her most memorable song from the era. And that's just the US. WW that's even more true.

E.T. was #1 on z100's year-end countdown, and it was #4 or #5 on BB's year-end. I'm sure it was pretty memorable as a whole. Plus the video...

E.T. is the song that made me a fan of Katy Perry. Teenage Dream and Firework got me interested, but E.T. sealed the deal, so to speak.

I can't wait to see the album sales, and the single sales this week, along with her Hot 100 placements for all her singles, lol.
