Co-Team Overthinking Captain here, but isn't "underneath the tree" just a euphemism for getting something (good) for Christmas (or, more accurately, lbr, "All I want for Christmas is you")? What's under a Christmas/holiday/winter tree is yours, and you can depend on something under said tree year after year (if you're a good Christian girl), so she's utilizing familiar childhood excitement while undercutting it with the sad, adult truth that physical possessions don't mean s**t if you don't have someone special to turn to and say "Look what I got!" Further, as she's grown up, her cherished "gifts" have grown as well, no longer fitting so squarely under the tree, but rather real, breathing, people, security, and love; still, the sentiment is the same, because love is never more palpable than it is on Christmas morning. Or something. That was actually rather poetic. Lol. Your point about All I Want For Christmas reemphasizes my point though. In that context, Mariah doesn't care about the physical things that Christmas brings, and she harkens back to the old famous expression "All I want for Christmas" and then turns it on its head by saying "is you". She literally and figuratively wants the one she loves for Christmas. When that same idea tries to turn that into wanting them 'under the tree' it only really makes sense as an expression, and not in the physical sense. Whether or not that's what they were trying to do can't really be proved either way, but I get the feeling lyrically it's supposed to play like "All I Want For Christmas" and it doesn't quite work that way. I'm sure the song is going to be iconic though. Oh and thanks to everyone else for trying to explain to me that it's a metaphor, but I think I already covered my comprehension of that. Maybe she's being more sinister than we're giving her credit for. After years of bad men and dates, she found a decent one and he is her fucking pet. He will wear bows, he will bow on cue, he will buy her big-ass diamonds and he will do it year after year until she decides she is done and tosses him out into the cold, wrapped in nothing but the red-hot fury of her future scorned lover number ones. 8D

I cannot wait to hear this! (It took me a little while to read those lyrics, as I kept "reading" them to the tune of AIWFCIY )

Really bad lyrics. I love it, it's so cliché and easy that it will be impossible not to relate to. Perfect for Christmas. I'm really nervous about hearing it though.

^^ Thanks for the discussion. Y'all have more more excited than I even already was to hear this song. I am terribly unartistic and therefore have quite a difficult time reading and interpreting lyrics without having heard a melody/vocal beforehand. Therefore, I am refraining from reading them until tomorrow !
BTW, where will this be premiered ?

I agree, I hope they wouldn't do too much to it though, I do really like the arrangement. And I agree about those other songs that you named, I feel like adding anything to them would take away from what makes them great. Except for strings, strings always work. I was just listening to the demo of Standing In Front Of You and I think I like it a lot more than the album version. It's more unique and electronic....the band arrangement kinda watered it down. That song could have had some cool Ellie Goulding esque production to it.I remembered reading something over on kce about Aben taking about this song, so I went and looked for the post, which was made right after Stronger's release. You can thank the label for the arrangement on the album. Damn, that sucks. Could have been a lot better IMO. Oh well, its still good.

^ I honestly didn't understand the majority of this, I'm sorry. Are you talking about my post? Haha I just meant that people say her voice was at its lowest during the My December era but I think it was at its lowest during parts of 2005. That whole AOL concert she sounded exhausted.

Anyway care to do the honours of starting an Underneath the Tree single thread in the Hot AC/AC Radio forum ? :) (I would but I suck at it, lol)

Anyway care to do the honours of starting an Underneath the Tree single thread in the Hot AC/AC Radio forum ? :) (I would but I suck at it, lol) We could put one there, but it may be better to just wait for the Holiday forum to open and we can post all applicable radio updates there? I think that's how it's usually done. They usually open the holiday thread when holiday stuff starts getting released, so I'd expect it to open soon. But let's ask someone real! Kurt? ETA: lol well aren't I impatient.

^^^ Great. I didn't realize there was a Holiday forum all these years, lol !
ETA: What makes me more excited than anything about this record is the very real possibility that we will get to hear every facet of Kelly's raw vocals (range, power/restaint when applicable, tone, melisma, soul, versatility and utilizing all aspects of her head voice, chest voice, and falsetto) on this record, such as the slow jazzy vibratto, very mild melisma, buttery head voice in White Christmas to R&B/pop stylings (which I am hoping for on 'Underneath' a la Mariah's 'All I Want'), to Rosemary Clooney-esque classic jazz vocals, to big band-style offerings, to classic vocals, a la Patsy Cline.
Is is this vocal spectrum which I wish for reviewers and the general public to have the opportunity to experience, and if Greg Kurstin pulls her unadulterated vocal to the forefront of each song, as he did on White Christmas, we are in for SUCH a treat !

Oh my lord Underneath The Tree already sounds iconic, I desperately needed those sappy in love lyrics from her. I love that she hand wrote the lyrics again like she did with MKIA.

Any chance this might be on iTunes tonight at midnight? I guess there is no guarantee that it will be on iTunes at all tomorrow. A premiere can just mean streaming on her website.

Those UTT lyrics But I still can't wait to hear it and I hope it smashes like everyone that's heard it says it will. She sounds great on Little Green Apples. Her voice is so versatile, I wish everyone (non-stans) would get the chance to hear all aspects of her voice. Kelly and I wrote this while out on the road on the All I Ever Wanted tour 2 years ago. The original demo was a little more 80's Madonna-ish. Soft, lush something I can't make out, small drums. To fit the rest of the album, they wanted a little bit bigger, modern, so that's what you hear. Kelly enlisted Jason Halbert, her MD, to produce the track so this song is really her only one on the album that is all in house team effort from the writing down to production which is pretty cool. Not many that he can think of right now off hand that's doing that and that is as much trust in the immediate people she surrounds herself with as far as the album goes. (what Aben's most proud about) It was the first of an song written on this album. It was an early favorite with Kelly, the label, A&R, management, everybody and through the songs thrown at her to compete for the album, SIFOY survived and still made the cut. (Aben) feels that's the sign of a truly great song and those don't come around super often and to be able to stick around after 2 yrs with the greatest songwriters in the world trying to knock it off is a cool feeling. Some of the new stuff he's doing with Kelly is sick too... some Lauren Hill throwndown vibes happening. It's gonna be awesome and can't wait share it with you, stay tuned.I hope this stuff makes her next album!

Mark my words and bookmark it this album is the best decision she has made since she took her ass to Idol Auditions. This will place her in our lives forever, her voice is perfect for the classic Christmas songs and all the white bitches who buy and listen to holiday music will be blown away. If she can make a album half as good as Queen Mariah girl is made.

I can deal with these Cheesy/clearly singing about Brandon lyrics for the Christmas album, but she needs to get all of that mess out of her system when working on the next pop album.

I was a little let down when I saw the basic lyrics, but it definitely all comes together nicely (the Christmas theme really allows for cheesy lyrics). As expected, killer vocals and phrasing from Kelly. Also, huge kudos to Greg Kurstin for his great production on this song. Not quite up to the uber-high "All I Want for Christmas is You" standard, but I'm obviously a fan. Should get lots of radio play this Christmas. Fingers crossed that this becomes a Christmas classic for years to come, which is not a guarantee.

Love it so much. Cathy melody, fun lyrics but not too cheesy (Tie it Up), fantastic production and Kelly's killer vocals. This is all I need for Christmas. I hope this smashes for her.
ETA: Damnit. I know it's 2:30 am PST but I need people to wake up and talk about the amazingness of this song. It's f*cking addicting.

My life was sleighed sooo hard by UTT. I've never heard such an instant and flawless song from anyone since MLWSWY. I hope this smashes HARD this holiday season!

It is everything I had hoped for and more. :'( I haven't been this initially pleased by a first single of Kelly's, or even any song of hers, in quite some time. She nailed it.
I always cringed a little in the months leading up to this when people would assume UTT would be an AIWFCIY type smash and that it'd be 'her' AIWFCIY, and I still don't have any expectations as to how it'll do, but she couldn't have picked a better sound for the song. It just sounds really classic and won't be dated in a couple years...and I think she captures the same vibe as AIWFCIY without coming too close to copying it.
Okay second listen: THE SAXOPHONE, oh my god, it just sends it all over the top. :'( It's so perfect. :'( My most listened song ever is MLWSWY, I could see this dethroning it.
