What Ryan's already stated:
Eminem debuts. (Think he mentioned someone else as well, but Em was the only one I caught.)
Someone unseats Robin Thicke at #1. But...who?
And it's a nice surprise to see "Stay"...still erm, staying! (It's #40.) It just doesn't want to leave after all, does it?

And oh yes, seeing as "Closer" is coming up...guess what song got played shortly before the show started? Love the song, but still... OK..."True Love" gets pulled down 7 with the week's biggest drop. And the song is actually still kicking on Mediabase. I blame the show squarely for this - in truth, they were probably pushing it too high compared to where it was on MB (with recurrents), and this is them over-correcting themselves. Guessing Cody Simpson (who probably should be On The Verge, even though Ryan said Extra for whatever reason) will debut on next week's chart only to disappear the week after, or something like that. Don't see AT40 breaking precedent by playing him 3 weeks outside of the chart only to drop him completely. After #33 he played a drop of Enrique's next single "Heart Attack"; they also talk on the phone for a bit. Another drop features Justin Timberlake's "TKO" right before "Mirrors" at #28. Ooh, and there's another Extra of a song I missed during my Pop Time Out ("Lego House")!

Jason - the first Op Extra was Cee-Lo Green's "Fuck You (Forget You)". And I think it's safe to say that "Cruise" is this week's Dropper.

It might have been a lot more fun to see if "Blurred Lines" got an 11th week on top, especially as no song last week made a move obviously indicating it would be #1 this week; there are at least a couple of possibilities. If "Stay" hangs on for a few more weeks then Rihanna's continuous four year streak of hits might not break, depending on the performance of her new single "What Now". However, it's not yet clear if it'll make it there in time.

It could have been worse. He could have given some kind of obvious clue as to who #1 would be. (Looking at some past AT40s, seems he used to do just that. ) In light of the no song making an obvious move last week, though, I think there's still some suspense to be had with the rest of the show to come. :)

21 #15 (04) Lorde "Royals" #15 was "Cups". I know he didn't give the number beforehand...did he after? (My stream jumped at that moment.) Either way, "Royals" is #14.

OK, so "Clarity" is #4. If "Blurred Lines" is not the next song, then the suspense will end right there.

So, "Roar" does make the 8-1 leap. Ryan just said it's tied for the second-biggest leap to #1 this decade. Fitting that "Blurred Lines" spent the most weeks on top since Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together"; her follow-up, "Shake it Off", is also one of those 8-1 jumpers. (October 1, 2005; the other is Iyaz's "Replay" on January 9, 2010, but that of course was following the 2009 year-end weeks and 2000s decade-end week.)

That same first chart of 2010, Ke$ha's "Tik Tok" made a move similar to "Blurred Lines" 11-1 leap, minus one notch (12-2); oddly, it didn't reach #1 until four weeks later. Of course, that probably wouldn't have happened if new charts had been produced and counted down during the three weeks of special holiday shows. Interesting how three of the four Optional Extras are by current or former "Voice" judges, including Adam Levine in "Stereo Hearts". (Note re "Without You": while Usher sings it, he's only listed as a featured artist, with David Guetta as the main artist.) The last of the four OE's is by Rihanna for the third straight week; not a problem or particularly surprising as she obviously has plenty of different hits to choose from. Apparently there's no Two for One this week, though "Stereo Hearts" and "Lego House" could have done that if placed after "Love Somebody" and "Everything Has Changed" (also "Diamonds" after "Stay", but I don't think they'd put an extra right after #40, especially for a feature that is usually placed in or near the top 10). Looks like they played some catchup this week after slowing a bit, judging from Katy Perry's broad jump to #1; it seemed to me that "Roar" should have been a bit higher than 11 and 8 the past two weeks.

It's not that uncommon on countdown shows for the host to say something like that. Casey did that a lot, especially in the 70s. Shadoe did it at least twice and Rick does it all the time.

One other thing - is this the first time in show history (and yes, I mean show history) with back-to-back #1s that jumped there from outside the Top 5?

Shouldn't Miley Cyrus "Wrecking Ball" have debuted this week? Hopefully next week she will break in there. Also, I don't think that "Stay" will continue to make AT40, but I could be wrong as some songs hover in the Top 40 for awhile before dropping off. I do want to see her streak continue, but "What Now" isn't in the Top 40 on the MB chart yet, though she is close.

Shouldn't Miley Cyrus "Wrecking Ball" have debuted this week? No way, not even close. On the corresponding Mediabase recurrentless chart (which is the one from September 15), it was only #54. It has no business not debuting next week, however. :) Accordingly, as "What Now" is only now approaching the Top 40 with recurrents, I'm thinking there's no way that "Stay" will do just that long enough. :( Oh well...she made it four full years in the countdown in any case. :)

"How Do You Mend a Broken Heart" by the Bee Gees jumped 6-1 on August 7, 1971 and spent 4 weeks at #1. Then on September 4, "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" by Paul McCartney jumped 12-1. In that case, it was almost three in a row: the following week "Go Away Little Girl" by Donny Osmond jumped 5-1, while "UA/AH" actually fell back to #5.

Here's 3 in a row: Bad Blood by Neil Sedaka jumped 6 to 1 on October 11, 1975. After 3 weeks, Island Girl by Elton John jumped 8 to 1 on November 1st and stayed there for 3 more weeks. Then KC and The Sunshine Band jumped from 6 to 1 with That's The Way (I Like It) on November 22nd but only spent a week at the top.

Hi everyone! Long time viewer first time poster.
Could someone explain the discrepancy between Media Base's chart and American Top 40s? Case in point, Media Base published this week's chart on September 11th. (see attachment) According to them it looked like this:
Rank Spins Daily Spins lw TW Artist Title TW lw Move Sun Mon 2 1 ZEDD Clarity f/Foxes 3736 3839 -103 1891 1845 7 2 PERRY, KATY Roar 3724 2952 772 1927 1797 1 3 THICKE, ROBIN Blurred Lines f/Pharrell & T.I 3595 4002 -407 1820 1775 4 4 CAPITAL CITIES Safe And Sound 3566 3320 246 1904 1662 8 5 DEL REY, LANA Summertime Sadness 3167 2885 282 1593 1574 5 6 MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS Same Love f/Mary Lambert 3166 3058 108 1651 1515 6 7 HARRIS, CALVIN/GOULDING, ELLIE I Need Your Love 3112 3056 56 1578 1534 3 8 MAROON 5 Love Somebody 3090 3641 -551 1512 1578 10 9 CYRUS, MILEY We Can't Stop 2532 2575 -43 1278 1254
With my favorite EDM song of the moment (Clarity) kicking Robin Thicke from the top spot. But as reported earlier, it was not the case with this week's show. So what happened?

We get 2 songs entering the top 5 with a brand new top 2. Now that's what I call a shake up at the top. And how often are there 3 "Love" songs in the top 10? It's a little strange that Rihanna keeps getting the last optional extra. Maybe it's their way of paying tribute to her for her 4 years?
Only one dropper, but we got to hear 2 new songs. There aren't usually two songs on here that I don't like but this week they were back-to-back at 33 and 32, and I skipped them.
So now B**ch is so controversial? Elton John had B**ch is Back in '74, Meredith Brooks had B**ch in '97, and Pink had Just Like A Pill with the nurse who was being a little b**ch though AT40 eventually edited out the word.
Ryan said that the I Heart Music Festival highlights air tonight and tomorrow on CW. He also said that Capital Cities tries to make songs with an 80's feel.
Is this the longest AT40 thread ever?

Is that what gets published in USA Today, assuming that is still even a thing? I mean, I would've liked to see "Clarity" hit the top as well, but it didn't get even one day on Mediabase's overall official panel. In any event, unless someone can prove that this is no longer the case, AT40 uses their own panel of their affiliates, and has for several years at least. (Possibly since Seacrest became host in '04.) richie - July 20 went to 2 pages, and we're not even there yet. ;) And that's not even the only one to go to 2 pages.

It looks like it's based on only Sunday and Monday's spins. Not sure why that would even be a published chart for any reason.

You can thank Janet Jackson for all the censoring following her Super Bowl appearance in 2004. Also, AT40 (and most other radio stations) were playing the radio edit of "Just Like A Pill," which had that word taken out. It wasn't something AT40 did themselves.
