Justin Timberlake's "The 20/20 Experience" and Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" finish 2013 as the year's top selling album and song in the United States, respectively, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Timberlake's "20/20," which was released on March 19, sold 2.43 million in 2013 and is the only album that sold more than 2 million copies this past year. The 2013 sales tracking year began on Dec. 31, 2012 ended on Dec. 29, 2013. "20/20" is also the smallest-selling year-end No. 1 album since SoundScan began tracking music sales in 1991. Previously, the SoundScan-era low was set in 2008, when Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter III" was the top seller, with 2.87 million. ("20/20" and "Tha Carter III" are the only year-end SoundScan No. 1 albums to finish a year with less than 3 million.) A year ago, the top selling album of 2012 was Adele's "21," with 4.41 million sold in 2012. "21" also reigned in 2011 as the top selling release, with 5.82 million that year. 2013's second-biggest selling album is Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP 2," with 1.73 million. It's the sixth time Eminem has placed an album among a year's top 10 sellers. In 2010, he owned the No. 1 album of the year with "Recovery" (3.41 million), while he was also the champ of 2002 with "The Eminem Show" (7.61 million). He also finished among the top 10 in 2009 (No. 9 with "Relapse"), 2004 (No. 3 with "Encore") and 2000 (No. 2 with "The Marshall Mathers LP"). Luke Bryan's "Crash My Party" is 2013's third-biggest album, with 1.52 million sold. It's the highest-ranked year-end album by a male country artist since 1992, when Billy Ray Cyrus' "Some Gave All" and Garth Brooks' "Ropin' the Wind" finished as that year's Nos. 1 and 2 albums (4.83 million and 4.10 million, respectively). "Crash My Party" was one of two No. 1 albums for Bryan in 2013 on the weekly Billboard 200 chart. It followed his compilation "Spring Break… Here to Party," which also debuted at No. 1 in March. It finishes 2013 as the No. 39 overall seller, with 543,000. Imagine Dragons' "Night Visions" is 2013's fourth-biggest album, with 1.4 million sold in the year. The set was released in 2012, and sold 417,000 that year (making it the No. 61 album of 2012). "Night Visions" is also the top selling rock album of 2013, while Timberlake's set is the best selling R&B/hip-hop set. "The Marshall Mathers LP 2" is naturally the biggest rap album of 2013, while Bryan's "Crash" is the year's best selling country release. "Night Visions" is also the highest-ranked album on the year-end best sellers list that did not hit No. 1 on the weekly Billboard 200 chart. It debuted and peaked at No. 2. Bruno Mars' "Unorthodox Jukebox" is No. 5 on the year-end list, with just under 1.40 million, while Florida Georgia Line's "Here's to the Good Times" is No. 6 with 1.35 million. Both albums were released in 2012. Mars' set sold 480,000 in 2012 (making it the No. 47 album of that year) while "Here's to the Good Times" sold 181,000 in 2012. Drake's "Nothing Was the Same" is the No. 7 album of 2013, with 1.34 million, while Beyonce's self-titled album is ranked at No. 8 with 1.3 million. "Beyonce" is also the youngest title among the top 10 albums of 2013, having only been released on Dec. 14. "Beyonce" is also 2013's best selling album by a woman. The next-highest ranked leading lady is Katy Perry, with "PRISM," at No. 14 for the year (969,000). Blake Shelton's "Based On a True Story" is the No. 9 seller of 2013 (1.11 million), while Beyonce's husband -- Jay Z -- is No. 10 with "Magna Carta…Holy Grail" (1.1 million). This is the first time in the SoundScan era that a husband and wife have both separately placed albums among the top 10 sellers in a calendar year. During the 52 weeks that ended Dec. 29, overall album sales in the U.S. fell by 8% to 289.41 million from 315.96 million in 2012. Physical CD sales were down 14% in 2012 while digital album downloads were also down -- for the first time -- by less than 1% to 117.58 million. (2012 marked the best year for album downloads, with 117.68 million.) SoundScan began tracking digital album sales in 2004. 41% of all albums sold in 2013 were downloads -- up from 37% in 2012 (and 31% in 2011). The top selling digital album of 2013 was "The 20/20 Experience," with 1.03 million. It is the only album sell a million downloads in 2013. For the sixth straight year, more vinyl albums were sold than in any other year since SoundScan launched in 1991. In 2013, 6.1 million vinyl LPs were sold -- up 33% compared to 2012's haul of 4.55 million. 64% of all vinyl albums sold in 2012 were purchased at an independent music store (3% less than compared to indie stores' share in 2012). Notably -- and not surprisingly -- 75% of all vinyl albums sold in 2013 were rock albums. The top selling vinyl album of 2013 was Daft Punk's "Random Access Memories," having sold 49,000 last year. Vampire Weekend's "Modern Vampires of the City" was in second place with 34,000. (A year ago, the top selling vinyl album was Jack White's "Blunderbuss" with 34,000 LPs sold.) As for digital songs, 2013 was the first year that download sales declined. 1.26 billion songs were sold last year -- down 6% compared to the record of 1.34 billion sold in 2012. SoundScan began tracking song download sales in the summer of 2003, shortly after Apple's iTunes Music Store launched in April of that year. Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines," featuring Pharrell and T.I., was 2013's top selling song, with 6.5 million sold. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop," featuring Wanz, was the year's second-biggest song, with 6.15 million. They were the only two songs to sell more than 6 million in 2013, and are among the only 26 cuts to have moved more than 6 million in history. (The biggest selling digital song ever remains the Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling," with 8.44 million.) Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive" was the year's third biggest song (5.5 million), followed by Florida Georgia Line's "Cruise" (4.69 million) and Lorde's "Royals" (4.42 million). Katy Perry's "Roar" is No. 6 with 4.41 million, while P!nk's "Just Give Me a Reason," featuring Nate Ruess, is No. 7 with 4.32 million. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Can't Hold Us" finishes the year at No. 8 with 4.26 million, while Bruno Mars' "When I Was Your Man" is No. 9 with 3.93 million. Rihanna's "Stay," featuring Mikky Ekko, closes out the top 10 with 3.85 million. A total of 106 songs sold more than 1 million downloads in 2013 -- down from the 108 that did it in 2012 (and 112 in 2011). 38 moved 2 million in 2013 (vs. 41 in 2012 and 38 in 2011).

www.billboard.com/biz/articles/news/digital-and-mobile/5855162/digital-music-sales-decrease-for-first-time-in-2013Digital Music Sales Decrease For First Time in 2013 By Ed Christman, New York | January 03, 2014 9:21 AM EST For the first time since the iTunes store opened its doors, the U.S. music industry finished the year with a decrease in digital music sales. While the digital track sales decline had been expected due to weaker sales in the first three quarters, the digital album downturn comes as more of a surprise as the album bundle had started out the year with a strong first quarter. Overall for the full year 2013, digital track sales fell 5.7% from 1.34 billion units to 1.26 billion units while digital album sales fell 0.1% to 117.6 million units from the previous year’s total of 117.7 million, according to Nielsen SoundScan. While industry executives initially refused to attribute the early signs this year of digital sales weakness to the consumer's growing appetite for streaming, in the second half of the year many were conceding that ad-supported and paid subscription services were indeed cannibalizing digital sales. While SoundScan has not yet released its annual streaming numbers numbers, so far industry executives have been reporting that the growth in streaming revenue has been offsetting the decline in digital sales revenue. Overall, album sales suffered an 8.4% decline, dipping to 289.4 million units from nearly 316 million units in 2012. The CD declined 14.5% to 165.4 million units, down from 193.4 million in the prior year, while vinyl continued its ascension rising to 6 million units from the 4.55 million the format tallied in 2012. That means vinyl is now 2% of album sales in the U.S; digital albums comprise 40.6% and the CD is 57.2% and cassettes and DVDs 0.2%.Meanwhile, album plus track equivalent albums fell to 415.3 million units, down from 449.5 million units in 2012, which represents a 7.6% drop. Despite the decline in album sales, million sellers increased in 2013 to 13 titles versus the 10 that passed that milestone the prior year when Adele’s “21” led the way with 4.4 million units followed by Taylor’s Swift;s “Red,” which scanned 3.1 million units. In 2013, only one album sold more than two million units, Justin Timberlake’s 20/20 Experience, with 2.4 million units. The top selling track in 2013 was Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” featuring T.I. & Pharrell, which scanned nearly 6.5 million units, followed by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Thrift Shop,” featuring Wanz with 6.1 million units and Imagine Dragon’s “Radioactive" with 5.5 million units. Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” featuring Kimbra was the top selling digital song with 6.8 million units the prior year. In 2013, 106 songs hit million units mark, versus 108 titles that achieved that feat in 2012. Moving over to market share, the Universal Music Group came in first with 38.9% in albums plus TEA, thanks to its acquisition of the Capitol Music Group, while Sony Music Entertainment finished with 29.5%, and the Warner Music Group tallied 18.7%. While these market share totals are by distribution ownership, where indie labels collectively are calculated as having a 12.3% share, next week’s Billboard will also show market share by label ownership where the indies are expected to have nearly 35% market share. Moving over to genres, R&B which includes rap was the only genre to post an increase in 2013, with album sales growing 1.2% to 50.7 million from 50.1 million units in 2012, which all things considered is pretty impressive in a year where album sales declined 8.4%. The only other genres to outperform the U.S. album market were EDM, which declined 0.3% to 8.8 million units; and rock, down 5.9% for the year to 100.8 million units. Despite the decline in digital album sales, download stores like iTunes gained market share growing to 40.6% of U.S album sales, while mass merchants like Target and Walmart saw sales drop 16.3% to about 78 million units and now comprise nearly 27% market share; with chain stores like Best Buy and Trans World seeing sales decline by nearly 20% to 39 million album units to comprise 13.5% market share.
Meanwhile non-traditional CD merchants like Amazon, Starbucks and concert venues saw album sales increase by 2.4% to 36.5 million units; and indie merchants dropped by nearly 12% to 18.3 million units. Respectively, the former comprises 12.6% of album sales while the latter accounts for 6.3%.

Not surprised about the sales decline. I just realized something: Usher's "CONFESSIONS" album was released back in March of 2004 & sold nearly 8m for that year. In July of 2012, he officially scanned 10m. It took him nearly 8 more years to sell 2 more million? IDK how I feel about that.

The whole top ten outsold previous year's 6-10.

Could somebody post Paul Grein's writings about this here, please? Makes easier to compile things for own bookkeeping.. music.yahoo.com/blogs/music-news/chart-watch-top-10-albums-songs-2013-184702481.htmlChart Watch: The Top 10 Albums and Songs of 2013 By Paul Grein, Yahoo Music Justin Timberlake may have been shut out in the marquee categories at the Grammys, but he cleaned up on the music charts. The multi-media star has the year's best-selling album, "The 20/20 Experience." And he's the only artist with two albums in the year-end top 20. (The sequel, "2 of 2," ranks #20.) Also, he's the only artist with three of the year's top 20 digital hits: "Mirrors" (#12), "Suit & Tie" (#17) and "Holy Grail" (#19). (The latter two songs, of course, are collabos with Jay Z, who also has an album in the year's top 10.) Timberlake is the first artist in chart history to wind up with the #1 album of the year both as a solo artist and as a group member. *NSYNC’s No Strings Attached was the #1 album of 2000. Alas, Timberlake's album sets a new record for the lowest sales tally for the year's #1 album since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking music sales in 1991. The album sold 2,427,000 copies during the year. The previous low (and the only other year-end #1 to fall below 3 million) was Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter III," which was the #1 seller of 2008, despite sales that year of just 2,874,000 copies. Here's some better news: Timberlake's album sold 1,026,000 digital copies. It's only the second album in digital history (following Adele's "21") to sell 1 million digital copies in a calendar year. Another "blue-eyed soul" star, Robin Thicke, has the year's #1 single, "Blurred Lines." The song, which features T.I. + Pharrell, sold 6,498,000 copies. This is down from last year's champ, "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye featuring Kimbra, which sold 6,801,000 during that year. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis is the only act with two songs in the year-end top 10. "Thrift Shop" (featuring Wanz) is #2 (6,148,000 copies sold in 2013, on top of 1,118,000 copies sold in 2012. "Can't Hold Us" (featuring Ray Dalton) is #8 (4,260,000, on top of 123K sold in 2012). Eight songs sold more than 4 million copies each in 2013, more than in any previous year. The old record was five in 2010. The top 10 includes six collaborations, more than in any previous year. Again, the old record was five in 2010. Imagine Dragons is the only act to appear in the top five on both the year-end albums and singles charts. Florida Georgia Line and Bruno Mars also appear in the top 10 on both charts. The list of the year's top 10 albums begins just like the 2000 year-end chart, with Timberlake (solo now, in a group then) at #1 and Eminem at #2. For Eminem, that was the year of the original "The Marshall Mathers LP." This year, he is represented by the sequel. This is the sixth time that Eminem has placed an album in the year-end top 10. This puts him in a tie with Garth Brooks, Mariah Carey and Beyonce for the most years with an album in the year-end top 10 in the Nielsen SoundScan era. Beyonce's "Beyonce" winds up as the eighth-best-selling album of 2013, even though it was available for just the last three weeks of the year. It's the first album to wind up in the year-end top 10 based on just three weeks of sales availability in the Nielsen SoundScan era. The former record-holder is Garth Brooks' "Sevens," which ranked among the top 10 albums of 1997 even though it was available for just the last five weeks of that year. With Beyonce and Jay Z both securing slots in the year-end top 10, this marks the first time in chart history that a husband and wife have separately made the year-end top 10. This is the fifth time that Timberlake has placed an album in the year-end top 10 (counting his work with *NSYNC.) The Year's Top 10 Albums I've already given you the details about #1, "The 20/20 Experience." Here's the rest of the top 10. Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP 2" is #2 (1,727,000). It's the year's top rap album. This marks the fourth time that Eminem has ranked either #1 or #2 on the year-end chart, a first in Nielsen SoundScan history. Luke Bryan's "Crash My Party" is #3 (1,521,000). It's the year's top country album. This is the second year in a row that Bryan has had an album in the year-end top 10. Imagine Dragons' "Night Visions" is #4 (1,402,000). It's the year's top rock album, the year's top debut album and the year's top album by a group or duo. It sold an additional 417K copies in 2012. Bruno Mars' "Unorthodox Jukebox" is #5 (1,399,000). This is the year's best-selling album that was released in 2012. It sold an additional 480K copies that year. Florida Georgia Line's "Here's To The Good Times" is #6 (1,350,000). This sold an additional 181K copies in 2012. Drake's "Nothing Was The Same" is #7 (1,344,000). It's the year's top album by a foreign-born artist. (Drake was born in Canada.) This is the third time in the past four years that Drake has had an album in the year-end top 10. Beyonce's "Beyonce" is #8 (1,301,000). This is the year's top album by a female artist and the year's top (non-rap) R&B album. This marks the sixth time that Beyonce has had an album in the year-end top 10 (counting her work with Destiny's Child). Blake Shelton's "Based On A True Story…" is #9 (1,109,000). Jay Z's "Magna Carta…Holy Grail" is #10 (1,099,000). This is the third time in the past five years that the rap icon has placed an album in the year-end top 10. Mumford & Sons' "Babel" (very) narrowly withstood a challenge from One Direction's "Midnight Memories" to become the year's top-selling album by a British artist. It's #11 (1,096,000, on top of 1,463,000 copies sold in 2012). "Midnight Memories" also sold 1,096,000, to finish #12. "Pitch Perfect" is the year's top soundtrack. It's #19 (793K, on top of 212K in 2012). A sidebar report on the year's top soundtracks will go up today. Kelly Clarkson's "Wrapped In Red" is the year's top Christmas album. It's #22 (763K). A sidebar report on the year's top Christmas albums will go up today. "Now 45" is highest-ranking album in the long-running "Now" franchise. It's #48 (492K). That's the lowest year-end ranking for the year's top "Now" title since 1998, when the first volume in the series ranked #111 for the year. Top 10 Songs I've already told you about #1, "Blurred Lines"; #2, "Thrift Shop"; and #8, "Can't Hold Us." Here's the rest of the top 10. Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive" is #3 (5,496,000). This has sold more copies in a calendar year than any other song by a rock act in digital history. This sold an additional 546K copies in 2012. "Cruise" by Florida Georgia Line featuring Nelly is #4 (4,691,000). This has sold more copies in a calendar year than any other song by a country act in digital history. This sold an additional 1,636,000 copies in 2012. Lorde's "Royals" is #5 (4,415,000). This is the year's top-selling song by a female artist. (It edges out Katy Perry's "Roar" by just 5K copies.) Lorde, 17, is the youngest artist to have a song in the year-end top 10 since Miley Cyrus, then also 17, had the #6 song of 2009, "Party In The U.S.A." Katy Perry's "Roar" is #6 (4,410,000).This is the fourth time that Perry has had a song in the year-end top 10. "Just Give Me A Reason" by P!nk featuring Nate Ruess is #7 (4,321,000). P!nk had the #10 hit of 2008, "So What." With fun., Ruess had two songs in the top 10 of 2012. This sold an additional 84K copies in 2012. Bruno Mars' "When I Was Your Man" is #9 (3,928,000). This is the second time Mars has had a song in the year-end top 10. This sold an additional 195K copies in 2012. "Stay" by Rihanna featuring Mikky Ekko is #10 (3,854,000). This is the third time Rihanna has had a song in the year-end top 10 since 2008 (when Nielsen SoundScan's songs recap originated). This sold an additional 57K copies in 2012. Miley Cyrus is the only female artist with two songs in the year-end top 20. "We Can't Stop" is #15. "Wrecking Ball" is #16. Cyrus had two of the year-end top 20 in 2009: "Party In The U.S.A." at #6 and "The Climb" at #12. (For Cyrus, who spent much of 2013 letting the world know that she is All Grown Up, that must seem like a lifetime ago.) As a featured artist, Pharrell Williams also has two songs in the year's top 20. In addition to the #1-ranked "Blurred Lines," he's featured on Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" (#13). Here are other songs, not already mentioned, that rank in the year-end top 20: #11, Avicii's "Wake Me Up!"; #14, OneRepublic's "Counting Stars"; #18, Fall Out Boy's "My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light 'Em Up)"; #20, Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble."

At least Billboard made mention of The Robertsons' album in the text- "a figure that balloons when to 808,000 when sales at Christian retail outlets are added." And then the top 10 quarterly sales list the 808,000, with a note indicating that "quarterly sales include unit totals from Christian SoundScan, "which the data provider does not factor into into its yearly sales totals."

The whole business with not including the Christian outlet totals makes them looks stupid. If they do have a way of measuring the sales, why not count them across the board?

For overall sales, of course they should include them.
But, since the DD albums were sold at Christian retailers and not regular country retailers, I can understand why they were not included in Country sales.
We'll see what the SS press release says this week.

21's total sales now stands at ~10,842,000. She's only 310,000 copies away from the all-time top 10. If she releases a new album this year, she might be able to make it by the end of 2014.

2006 01 - 2,015,594 - BAD DAY - Daniel Powter I must admit, you do a much better job of maintaining a sales database than I ever could. It should be noted here, that Daniel Powter's apparent one-hit wonder was the first official digital hit to go double-platinum, just as Cher's "Believe" (1998-99) was the last physical hit to do the same; and that was at a time when the industry tried to kill off the single to force people into buying full albums. Big mistake. What they did, by attempting to kill the single (which hit full stride in 2000), was energize the file-sharing movement; and instead of working with the file-sharing community, they tried to kill that as well. The sales decline we've been seeing since its peak in 2000 is the result of it.

How exactly did Santana's album lose sales in one year? :)
Come on Over had a decent year compared to the last several.

I double checked that before I posted it. The 2012 year end report shows a decrease over 2011

Interesting that many of the top 10 albums of the Soundscan era had yearly sales "lows" from 2006-2011 but are back up in the last year or two (Nsync, Creed, Alanis, Shania, BackstreetBoys, and the Bodyguard soundtrack, although that was largely due to Whitney's death). Just an interesting trend :)

Just an interesting trend :) Most is due to $5-$7 album prices at Target/Best Buy/Walmart.

Wow, Taylor's track record is insane! Over 19 million albums since 2008. Top Album Artists of Decade so far? 1 Adele 2 Taylor Swift 3 Justin Bieber ... Eminem, Lady Antebellum, Lady Gaga, Drake, Rihanna, One Direction, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, Mumford & Sons, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan... You mean 2006, not 2008. But impressive regardless. I dont think Bieber is anywhere near the top 3. Some of his sales would account for the other decade I believe.
