Alternate Versions Week:
The rules are simple: Artist A records a song but does not release it as a single. Later on, Artist B records the same song, releases it as a single, and gets a big hit out of it. First up is On The Other Hand. That was recorded by Keith Whitley for his L.A. To Miami album. Five singles were released. They are: 1. I've Got The Heart For You-1985-#57 2. Miami, My Amy-1986-#14 3. Ten Feet Away-1986-#9 4. Homecoming '63-1987-#9 5. Hard Livin'-1987-#10 In 1985, Randy Travis signed to the Warner Bros. label. His debut single for them, On The Other Hand peaked at #67. Travis kicked off 1986 by releasing 1982. That became his first top ten when it peaked at #6. Warner Bros. released Travis' debut album, Storms Of Life after that. On The Other Hand was rereleased in April and became the first #1 hit of Travis' career in July. Travis would see chart action with Diggin' Up Bones (#1) and No Place Like Home (#2 in 1987). Ironically, Whitley would record Nobody In His Right Mind Would've Left Her. George Strait's version succeeded Travis at the top of the chart (see chart below).

Alternate Versions, Part X:
It was a family affair for Conway Twitty in 1985. That was the year he released his Don't Call Him A Cowboy album. The title track was the lead single and that became his 39th #1 hit in May. A second and final single was released in Between Blue Eyes And Jeans (#3). Also included on the album is Somebody Lied. That was written by Twitty's nephew, Larry Jenkins (as Twitty was born Harold Jenkins in 1933). Ricky Van Shelton was signed to Columbia Records in 1986. He released his Wild-Eyed Dream album in 1987. His first two singles broke the top 40: the title track (#24) and Crime Of Passion (#7). His version of Somebody Lied was released in August. It became the first of ten chart toppers in December. The American Country Countdown named it the second biggest hit of the year behind Forever And Ever, Amen. Shelton got future #1s in 1988 with Life Turned Her That Way and Don't We All Have The Right.

Alternate Versions, Part XI:
Bob Seger scored a surprise country hit in 1983 with Shame On The Moon. That was originally recorded by Rodney Crowell for his self-titled album of 1981. That gave him his first top 40 hits at country: Stars On The Water (#30 in 1981) and Victim Or A Fool (#34 in 1982). Seger released an album in 1982 called The Distance. Lead single, Shame On The Moon was released in December. It climbed all the way to #15 country in March, 1983. It was a massive crossover hit, peaking at #2 pop and #1 adult contemporary. Two more singles were released, but did not dent the country chart. They will not be discussed here. Seger wrote We've Got Tonight, the duet between Kenny Rogers and Sheena Easton. That was in the top ten while Seger was having surprising country success.

Alternate Versions, Part XII:
In 1985, it was Janie Frickie versus Reba McEntire. The song they both recorded was She's Single Again. McEntire placed it on her 1985 album called Have I Got A Deal For You. That album spawned the title track (#6) and Only In My Mind (#5). While McEntire did not get a hit out of She's Single Again, Frickie did. She put it on her 1985 album, Somebody Else's Fire. She's Single Again was the lead single and that was released in May. It climbed all the way to #2 in August and could not dislodge the Judds' Love Is Alive from the top spot. Frickie got future hits with the title track (#4) and Easy To Please (#5 in 1986). In 1986, both women recorded Little Rock. This time, McEntire won that battle and got a #1 hit out of it in September.

Alternate Versions, Part XIII:
There is only one compilation album of Foster & Lloyd's music and that is the 1996 disc, The Essential Foster & Lloyd. There is a song on it that makes it debut and that is Don't Go Out With Him. That was recorded while the duo was at RCA Records (1986-1991). Tanya Tucker put that song on her 1990 album, Tennessee Woman. It went out under the title Don't Go Out. It was a duet with T. Graham Brown. However, the lead single was Walking Shoes and that peaked at #3. The duet was next. Released in June, it peaked at #6 in August. Two more singles were released and they peaked in 1991: It Won't Be Me (#6) and Oh What It Did To Me (#12).

Alternate Versions, Part XIV:
Mark Wills released an album in 2001 called Loving Every Minute. You will hear a familiar song on the album as Somebody ended up being a chart topping hit for Reba McEntire in 2004. Wills did chart two top 40 hits from the album: the title track (#18 in 2001) and a duet with his labelmate, Jamie O'Neal on I'm Not Gonna Do Anything Without You (#31 in 2002). McEntire released her album, Room To Breathe in 2003. Lead single, I'm Gonna Take That Mountain became a big hit for her that year (#14). Somebody was released in January, 2004. It managed to interrupt the chart reign of Tim McGraw's Live Like You Were Dying in August. You can thank a lot of overnight spins for McEntire to claim her ONLY #1 hit of the 2000s. Two more singles broke the top 20 in 2005: He Gets That From Me (#7) and My Sister (#16).

Who's Leaving Who was the next single and that hit #62 country and #26 A.C.. My Life's A Dance peaked at #26 country only. A fourth single did not chart and that was Heartaches. Perfect Ten, Part II:
The Bellamy Brothers released their second greatest his album in 1986. A new song, Too Much Is Not Enough was a duet with the Forester Sisters (or was it a sextet between two brothers and four sisters?). In any case, the collaboration topped the chart in December. That was repeated on the Bellamy Brothers' 1987 album, Country Rap. 'Lead single' Kids Of The Baby Boom was released in January, 1987. That became their tenth and final #1 hit in April. The title track ended the era on a #31 note.

Perfect Ten, Part III:
Hank Williams, Jr. landed his tenth and final #1 in 1987 with Born To Boogie. That was the lead single and title track to his 1987 album. Released in May, it topped the chart in August. That is probably country music's most rocking chart topper. Bocephus went stone cold country for the next release, Heaven Can't Be Found. That peaked at #4 in January, 1988. He ended the era with Young Country. That was backed by a bunch of newcomers. That peaked at #2 and could not get Eddy Raven's I'm Gonna Get You out of the way.

Tanya Tucker celebrated her 30th birthday in 1988 by landing a #1 hit, her tenth and final with Strong Enough To Bend. That was the lead single and title track to her album. Released in August, it topped the chart in October, just in time for Tucker to start her fourth decade on the planet. Three more singles kept her on the chart in 1989: Highway Robbery (#2), Call On Me (#4), and Daddy And Home (#27). Ricky Van Shelton collected his tenth and final #1 hit in 1991 with Keep It Between The Lines. That was off his 1991 album, Backroads. Lead single, I Am A Simple Man topped the chart in July. Keep It Between The Lines was the second single. Released in August, it was a chart topping hit in October for two weeks. Two more singles kept Shelton on the chart in 1992: After The Lights Go Out (#13) and Backroads (#2). The latter tune was blocked from the top by Billy Ray Cyrus' Achy Breaky Heart. Also on Backroads is his duet with Dolly Parton called Rockin' Years. That went to the top of the chart in April, 1991.

Perfect Ten, Part VII:
Steve Wariner topped the chart for the ninth time in 1989 with I Got Dreams. Little did he know at the time that he would have to wait until 1998 to top it again. When he did, it was off someone else's album. That someone else is Anita Cochran. She released her debut album in 1997 called Back To You. Her first two singles bombed at country radio: I Could Love A Man Like That (#64) and Daddy Can You See Me (#69). What If I Said was the third single and that was a duet with Wariner. That was released in November and topped the chart in February, 1998. That gave Cochran her only hit and Wariner his tenth and final chart topper. Cochran would release just one more single off her album and that is Will You Be Here (#69).
