Automatic needed 18 weeks to get to #3. My Eyes has been on the chart for ten weeks and is at #4 for the week. I know people don't like the comparison 'game' here, but look at the differences between a lead single from a brand new CD versus a fifth single from just over a year old CD. Does that mean Warner Bros. promotes better over RCA? Just asking. We all know it isn't the song quality of the Blake Shelton CD. For that reason alone, Miranda Lambert has been releasing more compelling singles over the years. Miranda just had some bad timing when "Automatic" peaked (got to #1 on MB though). Plus it's Blake. I know that Miranda is one of the biggest stars in country music herself, but we've seen her singles stall in top 3 or 4 before ("Baggage Claim", "Fastest Girl In Town", and "Mama's Broken Heart" was a MB #1). Blake on the other had, along with Luke, are the two hottest acts going right now. He could seemingly release anything at this point and it would go at least to #2 and most of the time to #1. RCA is very good at promoting singles, it's just that Warner Bros. has arguably the biggest star in the genre, and it's a whole lot easier to promote singles when you have an artist like Blake. I agree that song quality is by far on Miranda's side, but I'm sure you know song quality is close to meaningless when it comes to chart success now and days. Warner Bros. is among the best in terms of promoting their artists and their singles, but that doesn't mean that there considerably better at it than RCA. I just feel you're over thinking this too much. Both are superstars, but Blake's a little bit bigger right now. On a scale of 10, I'd say Miranda's a 9 and Blake's as close to a 10 as you can get in terms of overall star status.

The rate of decline for this one is somewhat alarming. It's crashing and burning as if it were a polarizing Taylor Swift single that had just got pushed to #1 MB/#3 BB. "Automatic" did get a bit of a push last weekend but aside from one large daily Mediabase gain last weekend, the push wasn't even that big overall. And yet this lost a whopping 11.2 million in audience on Billboard last week...that's one of the biggest weekly drops I've ever seen.
Since she still had a bullet on the 9th, this gets one more drop week (as it's only been on the chart for 19 weeks). Thus, Miranda will spend her last chart week outside of the top 10, possibly falling as low as #15 or so before "Automatic" goes recurrent.
It's just weird how the big market stations are dropping this like a hot potato, especially considering it tied the record for most weeks at #1 on the Billboard Indicator chart (5 weeks). Granted, Billboard only began archiving the secondary charts in 2006, but a 5-week run there is still pretty hard to pull off, especially when the song didn't ever get above #3 on the main chart. The other 5-week #1's on the Indicator chart are Lady A's "Need You Now" (no surprise there), Lady A's "We Owned The Night", Eli Young Band's "Drunk Last Night" (this one kept FGL's "Stay" to 1 week at #1 on the Indicator chart, whereas it was basically the opposite at the big market stations), and Luke Bryan's "Drink A Beer". All those songs topped the main Billboard chart quite easily, with "Need You Now" also getting 5 weeks at #1 on the main chart, "We Owned The Night" spending 2 weeks at #1, "Drunk Last Night" sneaking in a week at #1 before "Stay"'s 4-week run, and "Drink A Beer" easily getting 2 weeks at #1.
I don't think "Automatic" falling hard is necessarily indicative of how radio will treat future singles from Platinum, but it is a little disconcerting. I think that the smaller markets probably embraced the song more since it was more about simpler times. It tested pretty well and I'm sure it tested even better in the more rural markets. Its digital success was mild at best, though, especially compared to past hits like "Over You" and "Mama's Broken Heart".
In the end, "Automatic" was a pretty solid hit, but it just didn't move the needle all that much digitally. Obviously the album sales are a different story but I think that's based more on Miranda's reputation and the quality of the material as a whole rather than the success of "Automatic". I think the album would've still sold just as well if "Automatic" had peaked around #10.

I think the album would've still sold just as well if "Automatic" had peaked around #10. Maybe the fact that "Somethin' Bad" is already starting to get some solid airplay is causing to drop harder? I don't think "Automatic" had as much appeal to the casual country listener on non-country fan, so that's probably why the single sales were lacking a bit. I expect "Somethin' Bad" and "Little Red Wagon" (which I expect to be a single at some point) will sell a lot better.

I'm not sure if "Somethin' Bad" is entirely responsible for such a sheer drop, but I am sure that the quick start for that song has given radio a reason to move on much quicker from "Automatic" since the other song is already getting a lot of airplay. And as far as how well this one did, I'd say it at least did reasonably better than "Baggage Claim," even if it wasn't one of her biggest smashes. So, for that, I'm pleased. And it'll be nice to see how big "Somethin' Bad" gets since I expect that to be massive.

It's still an enormous drop in spins for a number one single more in line with what one would expect from a Big Machine artist such as Taylor Swift and/or Rascal Flatts as has been the case over the past three years.
In spite of the fact that Miranda will undoubtedly have the most-played single of 2014 by a female as she did in 2013, and will certainly wind up as the year's most-played female in 2014 as was the case last year, and be very tough to stop from a three-peat in 2015 at Mediabase due to their recurrent rules, it makes me wonder if country radio really wants female listeners in the first place, and especially since women in the 35-44 age bracket is the the most listening demo in country radio as Charlie Cook told Lon Helton last year; 'If you don't win women 35-44 you're dead' were his exact words.
I certainly expected 'Something Bad' to take a bite out of 'Automatic', but certainly not this much.
Nevertheless, Miranda's scintillating song will undoubtedly pass several singles by males including a few underwhelming bro-country tunes along the way as it continue to climb the year-to-date charts en route to a top-ten finish on the year-end charts, and that's fine with me.
