I listened to that George Ezra song. I could see that doing well next year, but yeah, Riptide screams "pop crossover"

I'm kinda surprised this is nowhere to be seen on HAC so far. Hasn't gone for adds nor does it have an adds date. It's notable enough on alternative now to send it there, and from there it can be seen whether or not it makes sense to send it to CHR.
This is just one of those songs that I think needs to crossover twice to get to CHR.

Agreed, but it's likely because they know there's room left to grow at Alternative and want Vance Joy to fully establish their roots there before getting labelled as a "pop" band. Alternative is the format most likely to play any follow up singles so it's important not to lose authenticity or something like that.

All true, but I mean at this point it's going to peak on alternative before it comes anywhere near peaking on Hot AC anyway. I'm always for sending songs for crossover adds earlier, as it helps keep the burnout rate down.

I have a feeling this is gonna be the next "Ho Hey". A pretty good song that becomes unbearable by being in the top 5 for a year and becoming a huge pop hit like 6 months later? Oh God, that's gotta be near the top of the list of things that don't need to happen.

I have a feeling this is gonna be the next "Ho Hey". ...and becoming a huge pop hit like 6 months later? To be fair it's hardly like Alternative radio was fast on this in their own right. This was a smash abroad nearly a damn year ago and Alt radio certainly took its time in sending its inevitable #1 peak.

While this isn't the most unheard of #1, I'm disappointed that "Dangerous", a much better song, couldn't stay there longer.
I can only hope this doesn't become a 52 weeker, because I'll rip out my eardrums if that happens. (OK, not really).
Also, as stated in another thread, if the next #1 after this is the new Foo Fighters single, then they'd better release that song very soon.

WI'm disappointed that "Dangerous", a much better song, couldn't stay there longer. Year from now (hell, weeks from now) all anyone will remember is peak position anyway. "Dangerous" is an official #1 Alternative song which is all that matters to Wikipedia readers! ...but the next #1 is Milky Chance though.

True, but I think it'd be more aesthetically pleasing if you checked out the list of 2014 Alternative #1s on Wiki and saw this with a bigger block than a 1 week #1 . (I hope that made sense btw.) Also, sorry buddy, but I hope that "Stolen Dance" prediction (assertion?) doesn't come true.

Don't count out "My Sweet Summer" either. I want to. None of the songs that are in range for #1 are top ten worthy, much less #1 worthy.

I think Riptide, Dangerous, Stolen Dance, My Sweet Summer, and Back To The Shack (the 5 songs I can see having a chance at #1 before Foo Fighters release their single) are all quality, top 10 worthy songs.

Took you awhile on that. I truly hate My Sweet Summer only out of all of those. That song sucks ass. While Riptide and Stolen Chance are not bad songs, they do not deserve such a fast rise at all. +200 bullets, and Stolen once had +350. Are you kidding me? They are not good enough to be top ten songs, much less #1. Mid-20s is what I'd say. Dangerous is done. I would love for BTTS to reach #1.

Honestly, it's a very hit or miss format, and 3 of my indie-loving friends hate it too. Yeah, Back To The Shack and My Sweet Summer took about 10-15 listens each before I started liking them.I actually think "My Swtt Summer" is the Dirty Heads' best single actually. Way better than that piece of utter garbage that was "Lay Me Down" (although I think Rome Ramirez is terrible, so that's a big part of it).

I would love to see "My Sweet Summer" hit #1. I wasn't big on it first, as I preferred their previous two albums. But it has really grown on me, and I appreciate that it has at least some type of rock sound too it. All of these other songs are really poppy-sounding. I think "My Sweet Summer" would make a lot of sense to start playing around the end of August and month of September.

My Sweet Summer is their worst. Spread Too Thin ist heir best. I really thought their acoustic album that came out last Fall, Phantoms of Summer, had their best material. "Warming Sun" and "Sloth's Revenge" are amazing songs.

Might be a little early to say that with Riptide's impending big run followed by the lead single from the Foo Fighters. The only song in the Top 10 that hasn't been there for a few months is Weezer, so I'm not sure how fast the chart is moving.

They tend to either give off a nauseating air of pretentiousness (Mumford and Sons, although I don't mind them) or sound boring as hell (Lumineers).

Unless Billboard doesn't say so. Well... From Billboard: #1 on both Rock Airplay and Alternative Songs.
