Why Does Country Radio not Support Kacey?
"Follow your Arrow" deserves to at least have the chance to smash somewhere.
CHRIS BROWN – Loyal f/Lil’ Wayne: 26.041 (+ 0.916)
Great to see this increasing.

I agree re: 'Team'. Love the intro and opening beats where there's that build up, then it just goes flat and becomes a bore-fest. Def. had way more potential but it's forgettable and bland.

The people in the country forum absolutely hate them. jhomes87 or some other country regular could probably list a bunch of them.

BEYONCE – Partition: 11.580 (- 0.259) Are they playing the whole song (Yoncé/Partition) or are they cutting the first part?

So it looks like Happy will climb to the top 10 on radio on its 3rd week on the chart! That has to be the record for the fastest climb ever (of course mainly due to the fact that they cut 25 positions from the chart but still)! Amazing!

That's The Way Love Goes, Fantasy, Runaway, Erotica all were top 10 in less than 3 weeks. Of these songs TTWLG even debuted at #1 in R&B Airplay before all of the Airplay charts were combined for the HOT 100.

Yah- "Erotica"s was when it was mainstream top 40 and rhythmic stations, and then in 1993, Adult Contemporary and Modern Rock stations were added to Hot 100 Airplay panel.
RE "Happy"- it probably had a week (or two?) in the 51-75 range, but the chart's just 50 positions. So, not apples to apples with when it was 75 positions.

The people in the country forum absolutely hate them. jhomes87 or some other country regular could probably list a bunch of them. It is becoming more and more the norm in country to do something like this. Recent examples would be "The Outsiders" by Eric Church, "Looking For That Girl" by Tim McGraw, "Rewind" by Rascal Flatts and "Invisible" by Hunter Hayes. These are songs that are all debuts that no one has heard from new albums; songs that have already been released on albums/iTunes have not got the treatment to date from country radio. Typically this is a Clear Channel deal, and the songs tank hard on their eight days and then begin to rebound again. However, that is not always the case. Taylor's We Are Never Getting Back Together peaked its debut week, along with Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw's Feel Like A Rockstar. Hope that helps.

It's a song about marijuana and girls chasing girls if that's what they're into. Country stations are probably just a little too conservative for that. Remember they effectively blackballed the Dixie Chicks who now are choosing Canada as their home base due to that.

That's too bad. They should send this to pop then, it could definitely smash there. One of the best country songs I've ever heard.

^I imagine it would be really confusing to play Partition with Yonce at the beginning. I actually don't understand why they made it one track on the album, they don't really seem connected.

Get Lucky had enough points to be in the top 30 this week (it's #2 on EDM songs while Stay the Night is #3 and #30 on the Hot 100), and Blurred Lines is #31; therefore Get Lucky got more points than Blurred Lines this week. If only this happened for a week last spring/summer, Get Lucky would've hit #1 :(

If i'm not mistaken, Merry Go Round went top 10 there and that also had a Marijuana reference, albeit a subtle one. Country Radio is so resistant to change and it's a shame that a great song like Follow your arrow won't reach its true potential.

Merry Go Round had an even more biting tone than Follow Your Arrow (it basically slanders the holier-than-thou types and the small-town-America lifestyle), and that's a theme that more or less runs throughout the album. So I'm wondering if maybe country just feels FYA is a 'lesser' MGR and chose not to get behind it for that reason. Sort of random but what is the website that people get call-out scores from? I thought I had bookmarked it but I was apparently wrong.

Here's what an article from a country music blog had to say in part about Kacey Musgraves song Follow Your Arrow: "For her third single, Musgraves chose ‘Follow Your Arrow,’ which is arguably the centerpiece of her album. It’s also a song that is about as far away from the material that currently dominates country radio as any one song could possibly get, offering up some of the most challenging lyrics to come out of Nashville in many years. Make lots of noise, kiss lots of boys / Or kiss lots of girls if that’s something you’re into / When the straight and narrow gets a little too straight, roll up a joint, or don’t,” Musgraves sings, in a celebration of personal identity. And while the choice to release it as a single was a daringly brave one, it could also be viewed as foolish in the current radio climate. ‘Follow Your Arrow’ peaked at No. 26 in the Hot Country Songs chart, and stalled out at No. 43 in the Country Airplay chart. That should really come as no surprise. When Musgraves debuted the song to an industry-only audience at last year’s Country Radio Seminar, the assembled radio tastemakers instantly recognized its unique appeal, breaking into applause at different impact points throughout the lyric. But while Musgraves’ performance dominated much of the conversation at subsequent CRS functions, the overwhelming consensus of the radio people was that although they loved the song, they would be unlikely to play it on any of their stations if it was released as a single." theboot.com/kacey-musgraves-country-radio/ You'll note, the decision not to play this song was deliberate and not accidental. I'm guessing anything that's close to gay is not going to get touched on in country music. The comments that follow also mention that there's a bro culture on country radio with only a select couple of females that get played on the radio so that's also part of it as well as the stagnancy of country music radio. I guess they want more songs about trucks.

The people in the country forum absolutely hate them. jhomes87 or some other country regular could probably list a bunch of them. Yep. Looks like bigfan101 beat me to the punch, though. But, because I'm a nerd... The Clear Channel debuts at country radio have been going on for a while now. The first one happened almost 2 years ago, when Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw debuted "Feel Like A Rock Star" at the ACM's. That song debuted at #13 on Billboard, and got as high as #11, before going recurrent. I think it only charted for 6 weeks or so. Incredibly bizarre chart run for a country song, and of course the only reason it debuted so high was because during the first 3 days or its release, every Clear Channel station was playing it once an hour. Most of us figured it wouldn't happen again but it's become commonplace for the lead single from any big name artist's new album. The #13 debut was pretty extreme, though. Most of the songs have debuted in the #25 range, give or take a few spots, and then the 2nd week "hangover" isn't nearly as bad. Other songs have debuted just outside the top 30. The Kenny/Tim debut and also the Taylor "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" one were the worst. The Taylor song debuted at #13, then fell to around #20...I think it managed to get back up to #15 or so but then it went recurrent. And obviously that's not even a country song anyway. Other artists like Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, Blake Shelton, Eric Church, Brad Paisley, and Kenny Chesney have all gotten the Clear Channel debut, and just this past month we added Hunter Hayes and Rascal Flatts to the list.

To be fair, country radio programmers have to respect what their listeners (bread & butter) respond to. And the song focuses rather obviously (and slyly positively) on drugs, too.
Country radio is not THAT resistant to change. Just ask any of the people currently bemoaning the 'bro country' trend over on the country board. It just reacts to what its audience wants to hear. And constant marketing Research reinforces that.
To flip it, would Dance Stations push a song by a newcomer advocating traditional marriage into their top 5? I personally don't believe they would.

It's not like any of the top songs on dance radio airplay have any inclinations to gay sex. Zedd's "Stay The Night" was about a one night stand.

Another article related to Kacey & Country's behavior toward female artists:
Country Executives on the Lack Of Female Artists at Radio NEWS By Phyllis Stark, Nashville | February 06, 2014 4:27 PM EST
With evidence continuing to mount that Nashville has a shortage of successful female artists right now, you might expect that Music Row has a corresponding lack of females in the executive ranks. You'd be wrong. While it's true that fewer than a handful of women have ever headed major country labels, just below that top tier of label management key female executives abound, particularly in the A&R ranks. The industry's top trade group, the Country Music Assn., now has a female leader (Sarah Trahern) for the third time in its history, and some of the top music publishing houses in town are owned and operated by women.
In the artist management ranks, many of the format's top stars are directed by powerful women, among them Kerri Edwards (Luke Bryan), Ann Edelblute (Carrie Underwood), Marion Kraft (Miranda Lambert, Chris Young), Gail Gellman (Jennifer Nettles, Sugarland), Nancy Russell (Alan Jackson) and quite a few others.
Big Machine Label Group senior VP of A&R Allison Brown Jones notes that like herself, many of today's female country music executives got their start in the business at a time when there were some strong female role models to look up to.
When she entered the business in 1991 as A&R coordinator at BNA Records, Jones says, "Frances Preston was running BMI, Donna Hilley was running Sony/ ATV Tree -- which was the epitome of the good old boys club as far as writers and producers [go] -- and Connie Bradley was running ASCAP. All three of those women were my role models . . . In the publishing, [songwriter] and A&R world, there's been some amazing female executives that [did their jobs] with grace and passion. They had fun but still were respected and admired."
Leslie Fram, senior VP of music strategy at Viacom-owned TV network CMT, remains "perplexed" about why a lack of successful female artists is a continuing problem, but the culture of Music Row makes her take heart. "I spent over 20 years in rock/alternative and pop radio and was fortunate to work for companies like Susquehanna and Emmis that hired and promoted based on qualified candidates," she says. "Viacom is the same way . . . I'm encouraged to see the same on Music Row and hope that radio will continue to open its doors."
Now, the challenge remains for that gender balance to be reflected on the charts, as Underwood and other artists noted in last week's column. This week, just four female voices are heard in the top 30 songs on the Country Airplay chart.
Fram is on what she terms "a mission" to help break more female country stars with the network's "Next Women of Country" initiative. Launched in January 2013, it has given added exposure across all CMT platforms to up-and-comers including Brandy Clark, Holly Williams, Kacey Musgraves, Lauren Alaina, Ashley Monroe, Cassadee Pope and Danielle Bradbery.
She calls the so-called "bro-country" themes of the current country music "a deep, dark hole we must get out of . . . Let's not forget that this format targets women. We shouldn't make this a male vs. female fight. Great songs/artists should be treated and considered equal. " Fram adds, "We as an industry need to change the mentality of 'a female slot' or 'female releases.' Female country music fans relate to country female artists and what they are saying. Male country music fans aren't turning off the radio when they hear a female vocalist."
But at least one radio programmer disagrees with Fram's last statement. After reading last week's column, Marc Patric, PD/music director of country CJJR (93.7 JR FM) Vancouver weighed in.
"I would love female artists on the radio more, really," he writes, "but everyone has to realize it's the listeners saying 'no thanks' to what is released today by female acts, not the program and music directors . . . I strive to play females but almost always find out my listeners don't want to hear it.
"The country females making it today are relating or winning over female listeners," he adds. "If you are a female artist you need to win over female listeners somehow by making them love you, or cheer for you, as a person and what you stand for. You can't just be a pretty face and a beautiful voice. In today's landscape, that's not enough."
