Such a hidden gem in her impressive list of out of this world album cuts. The year 2005 but might as well be the 90's or the 70's with this nostalgic impressive showcase of artistry.
Stay The Night (flashback!)
She is just so relatable.
"Obviously, procrastinatin' just to be Close to you a little longer now, boy It's hard for me to break away from you, baby Never could resist you and I still haven't learned how
And I don't wanna be a fool But it's hard when it comes to you And I'm feelin' vulnerable tonight 'Cause I don't wanna miss the chance Of relivin' our sweet romance Boy, I'm so confused down deep inside

^ One of her absolute best album cuts (and she has tons of them). I remember when I first heard it I was like " :o What a VOICE!" That final minute is everything. The song itself is great too, and I liked how it was different for her thematically.

My video from Sunday night, 15 rows back. for "I Don't Wanna Cry". It's my absolute favorite from her, and I was so happy she did it so well. She cuts the second verse though, which is unfortunate.

So good to see her performing these oldies but oh-so-goodies.
SoundScan includes venue and website sales, as long as they're reported.

She sounds amazing on IDWC.
I hate to digress from this Vegas talk but I'm still not loving her One More Try cover. If she had to cover GM I wish it had been Different Corner. That could have been ethereal.

The song itself is great too, and I liked how it was different for her thematically. Always wondered why this wasn't a single. I always thought it was because there was no way she would be able to sing that song live, at least back then. Now I have a second theory: she mentioned she "wanted to kill" when SIO didn't go number 1. Hypothesis: she fucking hates Kanye for blocking her, or at least did back in the day, and didn't want to feature this song (which I think he produced right?) as a single to spite him. Sounds unlikely but we know Mimi has an ego so...

I thought WBT blocked SIO from #1? I probably don't remember it correctly. When did she say she wanted to kill, lol I could totally see that though.

That could have been ethereal. I would have melted from a cover of KISSING A FOOL....I still love Michael Buble's version. And Kissing A Fool would have fit right in with the MIAM theme. I love that jazzy sound from Mariah.

I adore ILT but imagine if SIO had been the first single...that would have been a surefire #1. ILT was too edgy to garner multi-format support. And yes STN should most definitely have been a single. Would have been huge.

I thought WBT blocked SIO from #1? I probably don't remember it correctly. When did she say she wanted to kill, lol I could totally see that though. From this interview with LA Times. "There’s so many songs where you’re like, wait that’s my favorite. We didn’t do “Make It Happen,” we didn’t do “Can’t Let Go,” we didn’t do “Obsessed,” or “Anytime You Need a Friend,” these songs that were big records but weren’t No. 1 hits. Even “Shake It Off” — which I wanted to kill when it didn’t go No. 1 — I’m not used to do not doing it in a set list." I doubt she held back on STN just because of that though. I also don't believe it was an issue of her not being able to perform it - if you've seen her BET Blueprint from that time, she was in excellent form. I just don't think STN was ever in the running as a single (they went into the re-release and DFAU right after that) which is unfortunate because it was a definite smash. SIO got blocked by both WBT and Gold Digger. Everyone was expecting that she would eventually replace herself, but Gold Digger came out of nowhere. Immediately after Kanye and Jamie performed at the VMAs, it shot straight to #1 on iTunes and took over.

I don't know, Say Something was released as a single in March of 06, so they certainly were considering the original tracks for single releases after DFAU.

Say Somethin' was under consideration for lead and third single but kept getting pushed back. I kept seeing that song come up in a way that none of her other album tracks did, so I think Mariah really just loved that song and wanted to see it released eventually. Bummer that if flopped, I liked it too.

L.A. Reid supposedly was a champion of "Say Somethin'"- she probably didn't love it because it The Neptunes didn't take much, if any input, as far as the sound goes.

Sounds unlikely but we know Mimi has an ego so... I remember reading that it was Kanye himself that vetoed its release actually. Something about him not wanting TEOM to get more succes, and by extension buzz with the Grammys. The perfect opportunity for a great live performance of that song was the day Mariah did the BET Blueprint concert. She was on fire that day. The only times that song was performed live were once in Europe, while she was promoting TEOM, and a few times during the TAOM tour; nothing about it was live though.

Even though they did promo I didn't think they expected this to sell much. (maybe in the long run) I kind of thought the promo was for the Vegas show first and then the cd almost like an after thought. Maybe I'm wrong but the cd seems like it got released just because of the hype the show was going to cause.
It would have been nice if "Shake It Off" hit num.1 but at the time "Gold Digger" felt like the bigger hit. The second I heard it I thought SMASH.
I'm happy "Say Something" wasn't the lead single. I remember when it leaked before the cd came out I was so disappointed with it. I figured they only released it because of the Neptunes and Snoop aspect of it and figured it would get automatic play because they were all hot at the time. I never thought it would do well. However I loved the video.

I thought she hated Say Something? Reid's the one who told her to go back and work with JD after they had initially settled on SS as the lead though...admittedly I was always confused as to which one of them was so gung-ho about the song.

VERY interesting although the timing puts this into doubt for me. DFAU hit #1 around xmas of 2005, after the Grammy noms were out. The next single wasn't going to be released for at least another month (it wound up being 2), well after Grammy votes were in. So at least the part about Grammy buzz, I'm not buying. Also, do producers get to veto songs as singles?

^ Keep in mind that's what I've read on Mariah's fan forums over the years, who even knows if there's much validity to it. On a different note, Today a year ago Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse was released in the US. Can you believe it's been a year already? So much stuff happened (stand alone singles, lead singles, delays, American Idol, management changes, dislocated shoulders) until this album finally came out; the wait was definitely worth it though. It is outstanding, filled with Mariah Carey classics, it was a critical smash and stands as a big favorite among lambs. Happy 1 year anniversary! :)

The noms would have been announced that December but the final votes would not have been due until January, so there still would have been time for another big hit to influence the voters. I can see Kanye's ego being fragile yet large enough to believe that his work (and only his work) with another artist might prevent him from winning a bunch of awards for his own album. If that is actually true, it backfired b/c DFAU was released in October and peaked at #1 two months later; the re-release guaranteed that TEOM would a bigger era than Late Registration anyway. And as it turned out they both got snubbed in the general categories, so it was a moot point.
Calvin Harris was able to block "I Will Never Let You Down" after its release by not allowing Rita to perform it, so at least in some circumstances it is possible for a producer to block a song (this assumes the producer is also one of the rights holders). But if DJ really wanted STN to be a single they could have still released it after the Grammys, when any supposed competition didn't matter anymore.

I also couldn't believe STN wasn't a single (not that TEOM needed any more success). Those vocals are some of re best ever! I think if it had been released after WBT it would have been a bigger hit than SIO.
Happy anniversary MIAM, the masterpiece album that should have been huge :( YDKWTD, Meteorite, and Dedicated will remain should've-been smash hits

If MIAMTEC were released under Sony with the kind of promotion the #1s album is getting now, I truly believe we would be talking about a #1s album with 19 or 20 songs, not 18 plus a new one.
I firmly believe "You Don't Know What To Do" could have smashed, and "Meteorite" and "Thirsty" could have been big, too... Like really big.

Happy 1 Year Anniversary to Mariah's best album. I love everything about it from that iconic cover to song after song after song without a hint of filler. I even grew to love Money. God Bless this woman for giving me this album, which is everything I could have ever wanted from her in one collection.
