8000 spins at MediaBase: 3 1 COLE SWINDELL Hope You Get Lonely Tonight 8001 7607 394 57.593 Amazing. Big push too. The label REALLY wants the #1 for Cole don't they. I'm honestly surprised Luke didn't call Capitol's folks and say "Hold off" for his buddy to get a #1, lol.

Am I missing some sarcasm? Because this is exactly what it looks like to me. I mean, here we have Cole able to gain 120-130 spins on a couple of days this week with a song that's much older than "Roller Coaster". This is what I was trying to explain to @daydrinker...it really looks like "Roller Coaster" has slammed on the brakes and I don't see any reason to be surprised. It happens all the time. Luke and Capitol will "power up" next week and RC will still get a #1, but they clearly sat back on the sidelines this weekend and didn't interfere with Warner Bros. pushing Cole to the top. It's true that both songs entered the week with already very high audience numbers, but if Cole can gain 120+ spins so easily (like he did in today's update, and a couple days ago as well), then I don't see why Luke couldn't have done so too. To me, it's plainly clear that Capitol simply wasn't "powering up" this week, and that's the difference.

Congratulations, "Over You", you are no longer the worst-produced #1 country hit ever.

I really don't think Capitol Nashville would intentionally hold back a Luke Bryan song from #1, even though they'll obviously get "Coaster" to #1 next week. There's simply no way to go behind the scenes and figure out what the labels are doing, so any back-and-forth discussion over this is just one's opinion vs. the other's, but I don't see what Capitol has to gain from being nice and letting WMN/Cole Swindell have this week. Jhomes87 suggested that they weren't so much purposely holding "Coaster" back as they were simply just letting the single ascend naturally and that this is because "Coaster" will obviously get a week at #1 anyway and multiple weeks really doesn't matter for a single not selling too well anyway, but I still think that Capitol would have tried to get multiple weeks at #1 if they could have.
I've just seen too fierce promotion from Capitol over the past year to think that they would just put the brakes (or even just ease the gas pedal) on a Luke Bryan single that has been having great weeks once it's in the top 3. My opinion is that both "Coaster" and "Lonely" are just getting way too much airplay to still be gaining naturally and neither is selling too well, so both started struggling last week, and this week the consensus among radio programmers is that it is Cole Swindell's turn at the top, so Cole's single was able to put up some big gains (also due to a big final push from WMN) and beat Luke Bryan's single to #1, while the consensus on "Coaster" is that the single shouldn't be #1 until next week, so it will be pretty flat this week and then have a big final push next week. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with any other opinion/theory about what's been going on with "Coaster" here, but I guess we'll never know what was going on behind the scenes and so everyone will just have to form an opinion of their own.

There's simply no way to go behind the scenes and figure out what the labels are doing, so any back-and-forth discussion over this is just one's opinion vs. the other's, but I don't see what Capitol has to gain from being nice and letting WMN/Cole Swindell have this week. This is certainly true--we can't know for sure. But it strikes me as odd that Cole Swindell can suddenly gain a bunch of spins and audience, while Luke Bryan pedals backward for a bit. I never said Capitol has anything to gain here--they absolutely don't--but I just don't see why they would have tried so hard to go #1 this week when they know they're going to get there next week. Would it really make that much difference if "Roller Coaster" were a 2-week #1 instead of just a 1-week #1? With "Play It Again" it was different as they had a chance to go for 4 weeks at #1, and they pushed hard with "Drunk On A Plane" so they could cement its status as one of the biggest hits of the summer. I personally don't think they care at all that they missed out on the Billboard #1 for "That's My Kind Of Night". The labels don't seem to pay attention to Billboard hardly at all (and I think it's mostly BB's fault, but that's for another discussion) unless they get more weeks at #1 there than they do on Mediabase. Then and only then do they seem to acknowledge BB chart peaks. Everybody at UMG Nashville views TMKON as a #1 song so I don't really think there was any reason for Capitol to suddenly freak out and start blocking other artists left and right just because Thomas Rhett kept Luke from #1 on BB airplay. This could certainly be a part of it, but the one "hole" I see here is that Warner Music Nashville put up big "power up" ads for Cole on Monday, whereas Capitol didn't put out any ads for Luke. And there's also the CC-USA co-hosting schedule...Cole Swindell co-hosts this weekend, and Luke Bryan is on next weekend. I think that, if Luke were 2 million or more ahead of Cole at the start of this week, then we would have absolutely seen "Roller Coaster" go pretty hard for #1. But since Cole has kept it close on the last 2 charts, I think Capitol anticipated a strong push for Cole, and they decided to simply not get into a battle over a potential extra week at #1 for Luke. Even if it was just radio programmers holding RC back this week and not the label, then why wouldn't the label step in and say "hey guys, what's the deal?" We've seen it over the last few years that label promo teams have immense sway over how the charts turn out, so I think the failure of Capitol to step in here and do battle with Cole was a result of them simply not wanting to. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree, though. Anyway, this whole situation just furthers my belief that radio does its best to help newer artists to #1 these days. They love helping out because then everybody (radio people, artists, label people) can feel good about themselves. Of course there are other reasons as the industry is definitely more singles-based, but it used to be that, 10-15 years ago, the big names would routinely spend 4-6 weeks at #1 and we'd hardly see a newbie top the charts at all. Nowadays the #1's are spread around like holiday cheer.

Seeing how this has reached #1, I'd like to give my endorsement for "Aint worth the whiskey" as the 3rd single. I think it has big hit potential, and would probably sell decently for him. I think that would be a great way to close out this album cycle, and would keep his momentum going.

Worth the Whiskey is the next single and I there is a 50/50 shot that the first album gets 4 singles depending on how Whiskey does. Personally, I think it will do very well at radio.

I'm not a huge fan of new country radio, and not a HUGE fan of Cole's voice (I think it isn't strong at all), but I can say I've really enjoyed all three singles so far. I know he writes the FGL stuff and other bro country things, but I'd be happy as a clam if he keeps churning out singles like these and leaving the party stuff elsewhere.

I know it's an EXTREME longshot, but an avalanche of new singles, mercifully none of which could remotely be classified as 'bro-country' material having hit radio recently from Tim, Brad, Kenny, Lady Antebellum, Darius Rucker, Dierks Bentley, Garth Brooks, Eric Church, Keith Urban and now Carrie Underwood leaves me a teensy-weensy bit optimistic that the bro-country stuff will finally loosen its grip on country radio over the course of the rest of 2014 and 2015 and that stellar songwriting from all of Nashville's top composers will once again rule the airwaves.
Heck, the 'I-didn't-know-they-had-this-in-them' release of 'Dirt' by FGL will certainly go into the history books as the 'holy-s**t' single of 2014 IMHO; as the saying goes, who knew?
The forthcoming chart brawl between Carrie, Kenny & Tim with Brad in hot pursuit is certainly going to be very enjoyable to watch over the next 4 months or so; heaven knows we could use LOTS more of them right about now, couldn't we?

Cole gets his first #1 on Billboard Country Airplay! Not only that, but it also broke the airplay record that was just set last week with "Where it's At". This song had a whopping 50.6 million audience impression.

Congrats to Cole on another #1. I think the AI record is going to break every week for the next month. We got Luke, FGL and Jason next in-line.

This song had a whopping 50.6 million audience impression. I need to toot my own horn a bit. I posted this yesterday in the predictions thread: Here are my predictions/projections for tomorrow's Billboard chart (chart date 10/11)! :) 01) Cole Swindell – “Hope You Get Lonely Tonight” (50.600) Almost exactly spot-on! ;) Anyway, I agree with kml567 in that we could see the record get re-written a few more times in the next month. It happened at this same time last year, too, starting with Brett Eldredge's "Don't Ya" becoming the first song to top 48 million, then Aldean's "Night Train" set the record at just over 49 million, and finally Thomas Rhett became the first to cross the 50 million mark on the chart dated November 9. I don't have numbers for September and October of 2012, but we do seem to be forming a trend here in that late summer/early autumn is when audience numbers trend higher.

So proud of Cole for his number one on "Hope You Get Lonely"! I hope "Ain't Worth The Whiskey" follows up the success.
