There was no rush to release Birthday as DH was still comfortably in the top 5 on the HOT 100. I also would've liked to see a stronger video filmed for the song. I like the idea but of Katy showing up at Birthday parties but that clearly didn't work with the general public. There was plenty of time and money to make a new video to replace/supplement the old one. An 8-minute video was not a good idea. Hurt a lot of streaming potential right there.

Because she's one of the format's biggest artists, there was a chance that the song's entry to the top ten would get a shout-out in the article. Actually, no. Article's not up yet, but I can confirm that it moved up to #10.

This song is a SMASH... that unfortunately didn't smash. It happens sometimes, perfectly catchy and single ready songs underperform. It could be the timing after "DH" and there could also be a little Katy fatigue. This is right up there with some of her best singles in terms of catchiness and quality. "WOA" and "TIHWD" are the obvious next choices. But are either of these necessarily better single wise than this? Which makes me wonder how her next single will do. I don't know what the hell people see in "LL" at all, it has flop written all over it to me. I only liked the above post for the part about LL..Birthday sucks.

Birthday would have done much better if it had been released a month later and with a normal music video.
I was NOT here for the music video. Dressing her up as men and clowns was NOT a good idea. The music video only has 27 million views. 27 million! That is ROUGH! She would have gotten so many more chart points. I can't even... I get genuinely upset. If they had kept her in the blonde princess costume being dumb and self centered or something for only 3 minutes that would have fine. She looked hot.
But the public doesn't want their pop star dressing as a dude... (see Lady Gaga) I wish she looked cute in the video!

I agree with the above poster in that this was a song that should have smashed. It is a well crafted song with an instantly memorable hook that screams summer smash all over it. The only thing I can think of what kept this song from performing better aside from the "Dark Horse" recurrentitis is that this song is probably a little too retro sounding for many listeners. Unfortunately, that does not explain why this song is not performing better on Hot AC radio either, a format with an audience that should be eating this song up. Maybe people are a bit tired of Katy as well, I'm just not sure. What I do believe though is this is not necessarily a career "destroyer" for her, and for people to think that her career is finished is just ridiculously short sighted! Tell me how many times Madonna has flopped (some relatively speaking compared to other songs early in her career). Some said Kelly Clarkson was finished after "Never Again" bombed many years ago. She only came back with the top Hot AC song of the year in 2012 with "Stronger". So for anyone to write off her career is completely premature right now. And I also don't believe that this song sounds too much like LFN and TD amongst others. While structurally similar to them, "Birthday" definitely has it's own unique sound in comparison to her other hits, and should be performing much better than it is. I would hate to think a bad music video would have a lot to do with this, as the song should be assessed seperately from the video.

It doesn't have a great chorus, the birthday concept is pretty lame and that "big balloons" thing is channel-changing. It's structured enough like the songs you mentioned to lose any sense of "freshness," but it is different in that it lacks what really made those songs work. Teenage Dream was made on the power chords in the chorus and Last Friday Night has a fantastic groove + the sax breakdown. This doesn't have anything memorable. The poor reviews for the video didn't help matters - videos are a huge part of Katy's game, but only 2 of the 4 have really worked. Care to guess which 2 those were?

On Billboard's Mainstream Top 40 chart, it had 8,779 spins (+301) for the week ending June 15. "Rude" will jump it for the next chart, but it should jump "All of Me," so No. 9 may be where it tops out.

This will at least peak at #9, matching Unconditionally's peak (still a bit unsure about "Me And My Broken Heart" but it can go #8 by Sunday). If it peaks at #9: "Roar" - #1 "Unconditionally" - #9 "Dark Horse" - #1 "Birthday" - #9 I see a pattern here, next: a new Pop #1 by Katy

Okay, I know that this has been beat to death, but I haven't posted here yet so I'll offer my two cents. I think that what ultimately caused this to stall right around #10 is just that this song isn't top 10 material. It's a cute song, and I enjoy listening to it, but it obviously isn't a smash.
The fourth single off of Teenage Dream was E.T. That was a #1 single, and when you compare Birthday to E.T., Birthday just doesn't stack up. E.T. offered a darker, more intense, electronically driven side of Katy that wasn't present in the first three singles. It had unique lyrics, a powerful chorus, a great beat, a wonderful video, and an awesome remix by a notable rapper. Birthday is an average pop song with an average single campaign. I'm a Katy fan, and Birthday is a cute song, but can we really expect an average single to smash when it is the fourth one released off of an ~8 month old album? How does this single differ from Roar? What would cause people who already own Teenage Dream and Roar to buy this song?
I don't think that this single is a bad thing for Katy and isn't going to impact her career. Everyone knows that her string of #1's is simply unsustainable. She released your solid pop tune and it went top 10. I'd say that it was a successful campaign, especially for a FOURTH single, mind you.

Why did they not release the Cash Cash remix? The original is bland shit, the remix is an EDM masterpiece. Ok, small hyperbole, but still.

This has been one of the longest sputters I can remember. It seemed to hit a wall like 3 or 4 weeks ago and now it seems to actually be peaking.
