^ There was a very similar case in the UK too (also including Eminem). There's a rock station called XFM, and back in the day on Ricky Gervais's show they had a "hip hop track of the day" feature where they'd play a hip hop track just to add a bit of variety every day. The silly thing is, they always had Eminem (and also The Streets, who are a hip hop-ish group) in high rotation. It just always seemed odd to me as a listener that they'd sometimes play Eminem or The Streets and then a few minutes later have their "hip hop track of the day" feature when they'd just played one shortly before. Were they not aware of that?

Lords just went #1 at Urban a few months ago. Robin Thicke and Justin Timberlake have a bunch of top tens there. It's not like there a plethora of non-black artists desperately trying to break through at the format. The fact that you can actually name the people that have made an impact in the urban charts tells you that they're racist enough. It's sort of the same with the BET Awards, but I won't go there... I personally don't think Pop radio is "racist" though. One of the biggest songs of the summer so far is sung by a black guy. John Legend. Honey really? Because there a song sung by a black guy then all is right? Lol so because Obama is president then there is no more racism? Honey u need a better basis for your argument. In regards to BET well if MTV and others played black artists and didn't shun them until Michael Jackson and "Thriller" forced a black face upon them and even then only a few select artist even had that privilege. BET was created to counter act the blatant shunning and racism towards urban music on MTV and others. Its not racism its fairness and the fact some people bring up BET as racist is frustrating and well bigoted or to be fair ignorant (and I'm not talking about u per se but in general)

To be clear... this was only discussing black RAPPERS. I didn't think anyone would be ignorant enough to argue that pop radio shuns black artists altogether... A quick look at the current top 40 will quickly disprove that.

Racism in Radio^ A new home for this discussion to continue. Because except for this post here, we've managed to cut Bey completely out of her own thread.

It's sort of the same with the BET Awards, but I won't go there... I am truly baffled that in the year 2014 this is still a thought that people are having. What a time to be alive!

It won't chart either way, so they may as well push it forward and end its suffering ASAP

In all seriousness, Beyonce is currently just about the biggest star in the world and has a ridiculous amount of hype surrounding her personal and professional life. Her new music has done incredibly well commercially and critically and doesn't exactly buck from what's considered mainstream these days. It doesn't take a genius to tell that the fact that pop radio still won't touch her even though just about every factor is lined up right indicates that somethin' in the buttermilk ain't clean. I agree, but pop radio is like high school. If they just decide you are not cool one day then you are simply out. There doesn't have to be logic involved. Honestly I think they believe she's too old or something, that their current audience doesn't care about her because they are too young. Hell, JLo had to host Idol before they went anywhere near her and she'd been trying for years. Ditto Adam Levine and The Voice. And Mariah Carey gets ignored on the regular. Men as they age (Usher, Timberlake) can last a litte longer but once your heyday gets to be 10-15 or so years ago as a female, the powers that be start seeing you as yesterday's news. Then they start shipping you off to HAC or Urban.

The issue here is no ageism per se, is that Beyoncé sings about being a fucking wife and the married life. It is hard for the young audience to connect with that.

She was considered crossover before much like Rihanna and Nicki. Now she is no considered strictly urban if you go by how pop radio acts towards her. Personally I don't think it's the end of the world. She's had a good run and she seems to be making money anyway. I just think there's been a pretty obvious shift in the way she's viewed at pop, and I think the same thing has happened to other solo female acts that were most popular around the same time she was, or hung around for a long time. Maybe getting married and popping out a baby didn't help as referenced above. Who knows?

Then they start shipping you off to HAC or Urban. Hmm, I wish I could say I agree, but I don't. I honestly think "XO" was on its way to be a Top 10 hit on Top 40 (honestly), it was at #14 I believe before it started to lose massive spins due to "Drunk in Love" being added to the format, plus the Grammys (I think it was the Grammys?) performance. "Drunk in Love" peaked where it did on Top 40 because it was already out for several weeks leading up to it being added to the format, plus who's really requesting Beyoncé songs on the radio? Yes, she has millions of fans, but I see more of the tween fans of One Direction, Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato, requesting songs like crazy! I do, however, agree that Top 40 has been holding out on Beyoncé for the past several singles... basically since "Sweet Dreams". If you think about it, the whole 4 era wasn't a hit with Top 40 radio. The BEYONCÉ era is a hit, but I feel that since Beyoncé's team did the dual single release, it messed up "XO"'s chances. They should've stuck with one single; whether it be "XO" or "Drunk in Love." So, as far as those singles peak positions on Top 40 this year, I blame her team. I do believe Top 40 still loves Beyoncé (maybe more than you think) but the problem is a lot of the songs on the new record aren't as radio-friendly as usual Beyoncé songs are, all of the songs sent so far, in particular "Partition," didn't have a radio edit and I believe it needed one... and from what it sounds like, "Pretty Hurts" doesn't have one either :( Either way, I still hear "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" and "Crazy in Love" on the radio, which entails that Top 40 still adores Beyoncé, it's could just be her singles now aren't necessarily how they were when she first started, but still amazing, nevertheless. P.S. - I'm still pissed that Top 40 passed on "Countdown"... literally could have been Beyoncé's next hit after "Single Ladies"..

It's her team's fault. Wrong timing and choice since 4. And she stop doing radio interview since 4...
I think this album's hype is dead already. So pop radio won't give chances to future singles but who knows...
Ph is currently doing fine in uk and aus radio. So us pop radio might give chances like them.

I honestly think she should have tried for "Partition" It's just as catchy as "Drunk In Love" I can't even remember what "Pretty Hurts" sounds like. Even "Blow" which I think is a little overrated is better than this.
