Top Artists of 2014 (#25 - 21) 2014 YEC Mega-Post (link)
25. J. ColeCharting Songs: 4 Biggest Hit: She Knows (ft. Amber Coffman & Cults) [PK: 2 WC: 25]J. Cole is one of those artists that I had discovered just before starting my chart, but didn't really dive into his discography until I listened to She Knows. While some say it's too poppy for their taste, it helped me learn about fantastic storytelling tracks like Let Nas Down. His lead singles like Power Trip didn't even register with me until after that week, despite its decent Hot 100 run. I shamefully haven't really gotten the chance to check out 2014 Forest Hills Drive but maybe there are some hidden chart hits waiting to emerge. 24. StarsetCharting Songs: 3 Biggest Hit: My Demons [PK: 1 WC: 19*]I feel bad about having Starset this low, but it's due to how late I discovered their record. My Demons had spent over six months on the Mediabase Rock chart and on the first listen, it clicked. After three weeks at #1, I looked to the rest of the album for more content, and it delivered. Carnivore is still rising at #2, and Halo is most likely destined for a Top 10 peak. Their blend of orchestral elements with epic choruses should provide for more strong hits in 2015. 23. Sir SlyCharting Songs: 3 Biggest Hit: Gold [PK: 3 WC: 30]With sleeper #3 chart hit Gold, Sir Sly slowly crept into relevance, producing one of the year's top charting and longest lasting tracks. You Haunt Me was a decent follow up but couldn't produce the same slow-growing magic that its predecessor had. Where I'm Going struggled to make a mark on the chart, but You Haunt Me is a solid album that should hopefully produce a fourth chart single soon. 22. Nine Inch Nails Charting Songs: 5 Biggest Hit: Came Back Haunted [PK: 5 WC: 17*]Here's something that my fellow Alternative posters can crucify me for. Outside of "Head Like A Hole" (which I didn't even know was by NiN), I knew no Nine Inch Nails songs before this summer. Watching old 2013 Alternative chart videos in order to try to catch up with what I had missed, I came upon Came Back Haunted, which quickly entered and rose to a Top 5 placing on my chart. 25 years of music is a huge discography to dig through, and while I'm still trying to get acquainted with the immense amount of music Trent Reznor has produced, several of his mid 2000's Alternative hits from With Teeth have found their way to strong peaks. Only has risen to a #9 peak and is still climbing, while I'm sure many hits will find their way onto the charts in 2015. 21. Beck Charting Songs: 4 Biggest Hit: Say Goodbye [PK: 1 WC: 27]From clueless embarrassment to my favorite artist of all time (check the 2,000+ scrobbles). If I were to stan for an artist, Beck would be that artist. A #1 hit from his January record Morning Phase was inevitable, and Say Goodbye achieved the goal in April. Blue Moon's peak came just before the chart, maybe another #1 would have established itself. Oh well, I'm speculating. I'm anxiously awaiting Beck's next project, which was supposed to drop this year but looks like that's not happening. Either way, stoked for a return to upbeat Beck after all of this time, and there should be some activity from that album's tracks on the chart.

Top Artists of 2014 (#20 - 16) 2014 YEC Mega-Post (link)
20. Aloe BlaccCharting Songs: 4 Biggest Hit: The Man [PK: 2 WC: 18]I had been a fan of Aloe Blacc since his Good Things record with fantastic tracks like I Need A Dollar and Loving You Is Killing Me, but he didn't have too much recognition. I was really surprised to see him in Avicii's Wake Me Up, and even more surprised that he turned it into a nice hit single and a solid record. In retrospect The Man isn't my favorite song from Lift Your Spirit (tracks like Ticking Bomb and Love Is The Answer are a bit better), but I'm glad he got some deserved promo from his featured appearance. 19. Jack WhiteCharting Songs: 4 Biggest Hit: Lazaretto [PK: 6 WC: 19]I still haven't heard all of Blunderbuss, but I've enjoyed many of Jack White's projects in the past, whether through The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, or The Dead Weather. So a new solo album was a nice surprise, especially prefaced by the scorching freeform lead single, Lazaretto. It's kind of a shame it stalled out before really staking a claim in the Alternative Top 5, but it still had some nice success in a less favorable Alt climate for White's music than past years. While the album Lazaretto was a bit hit and miss, especially the more folk-leaning tracks, several cuts found their way to strong peaks, That Black Bat Licorice and Would You Fight For My Love? among them. 18. SeetherCharting Songs: 3 Biggest Hit: Words As Weapons [PK: 1 WC: 23*]It took a few months and a re-listen of Words As Weapons for Seether to bring themselves to the forefront of 2014's fall charts, but once they grabbed hold they were a familiar face in the Top 10. Same Damn Life was a solid follow-up (peaking at #7), and See You At The Bottom is rising through the Top 40. Expect at least one more single from Isolate and Medicate, and future Seether tracks to do well on the chart. If they keep this consistency up they should have no problem dominating the ranks. 17. Bastille Charting Songs: 5 Biggest Hit: Things We Lost In The Fire [PK: 20 WC: 21]Bastille struck rock radio forcefully in the Summer of 2013, with Pompeii quickly rising to inescapable radio levels by the next spring. Since I had already moved past the track by the time February rolled around, Bastille's charting life relied on top 10 tracks like Bad Blood to keep them relevant. Other slow-rising but long-lasting tracks like Things We Lost In The Fire and Of The Night aided in their strong artist position. These guys seem to be constantly releasing new tracks and rumors of their sophomore effort are popping up here and there, so I'm excited to see where they'll go next. 16. Kongos Charting Songs: 5 Biggest Hit: I'm Only Joking [PK: 4 WC: 23]These South African brothers might have beeen a bit higher on the list if Come With Me Now hadn't been flying up the charts in the early months of the year. It only managed a #6 peak due to the chart's late 2014 start, but I'm Only Joking fixed their Top 5 absence with a #4 peak in September. A third chart hit was hard to find, tracks like I Want To Know and Escape had attempts but couldn't find solid footing. It wasn't until Kids These Days where Kongos re-entered the Top 50. Lunatic might be done with charting tracks, but Kongos have established themselves for an attempt at Alternative glory in a few years time with their new record. Hopefully their unique sound continues to carry them up the charts.

Good to see you included Sir Sly, Bastille and Kongos, so far, on your top artists so far, while I really like you included "Happy Idiot", "Summer" (Yay!), "Coming of Age", "Somebody New", "Are You What You Want To Be?", "One Minute More" and "Battle Cry", so far, on your top songs of this year.

Top Artists of 2014 (#15 - 11) 2014 YEC Mega-Post (link)
15. Big DataCharting Songs: 3 Biggest Hit: Dangerous [PK: 1 WC: 35*]Storming onto the Alternative scene in 2014 with #1 hit Dangerous, Big Data's position on my artist chart is really attributed to that one massive smash. I'm anxiously awaiting the 2.0 album in March of 2015, and finally after months of waiting the second single The Business Of Emotion was able to earn itself a Top 10 position. The biggest injustice to this song this year is how little my local Alternative station (WRFF) played it. It ended up #43 on its year-end list, behind some abysmal tracks. I'd like to think in a perfect world that my high charting of the single made up for it. Can't wait to see what this project turns out next! 14. Soul Coughing Charting Songs: 5 Biggest Hit: Super Bon Bon [PK: 1 WC: 19*]Mike Doughty's solo work had been in heavy rotation well before I knew anything about music charts, and I knew he was in a band before going solo, but never checked them out until this year. It's kind of a shame because of how much I've missed. While most would agree Circles is their biggest hit, I found one of my favorite tracks of the year in Super Bon Bon. The visceral chorus backed by the smooth bassline cut through me and flew straight to a #1 peak. Doughty's solo project this year produced a pretty big single on my chart (stay tuned for that), but it's a shame the band broke up on such negative terms since what they created in three albums was pretty phenomenal. 13. The Neighbourhood Charting Songs: 6 Biggest Hit: Let It Go [PK: 14 WC: 22]While I had already enjoyed Sweater Weather in 2013, 2014 was the year of digging deeper into The Neighbourhood's debut album. Afraid and Let It Go emerged as the record's second and (shamefully ignored) third singles, and both tracks had Top 20 peaks with strong longevity. Throughout the summer other cuts like Flawless and Wires managed to carve out runs of their own. While their lyrics need a bit of work; (whichever song talks about "dreams and nightmares" over and over again is just grating to hear) they've got the haunting sound down and hopefully continue to explore that in future albums. 12. Royal Blood Charting Songs: 5 Biggest Hit: Little Monster [PK: 1 WC: 17*]
A late discovery that may have not found success on my chart if it were not for Out Of The Black escaping the Bubbling Under portion of the chart after six weeks, Royal Blood's heavy two-piece sound rocked the airwaves this year. Their debut album is absolutely fantastic and I recommend anyone that has liked any track from them to check it out, you won't be disappointed. As the fall wore on, Little Monster became a chart force, spending five weeks at #1. Several other songs managed to peak well, including second single Figure It Out. Stoked to hear what's next for these guys in 2015. 11. Kendrick Lamar Charting Songs: 8 Biggest Hit: Hol' Up [PK: 2 WC: 23]Swimming Pools (Drank) was the at first misunderstood track that sparked my discovery of Kendrick Lamar. After spinning good kid, m.A.A.d city an unhealthy amount of times in 2013, one of the biggest songs of the year came from his previous effort, Section.80. While i didn't make as much of an impact, Kendrick's third album is probably my most anticipated album of 2015. His flawless flow along with storytelling ability and endless supply of rhymes unquestionably puts him at the top of the rap game right now.

Kendrick Lamar ~ Hol' Up Run: 40-15-6-2-3-4-7-10-18-23-34-42-58-76-95-off PK: 2 WC: 15 I'll probably start doing at least 1-sentence summaries once we hit the Top 50.

10. HozierCharting Songs: 4 Biggest Hit: Take Me To Church [PK: 1 WC: 29*]The first time I heard Hozier's now worldwide smash single, I was hooked. His biting vocals conveyed in his hauntingly soulful voice cut right through me. As the song crossed over to Alternative radio and then Pop and HAC radio later in the year, I was shocked to see a song that I didn't see as particularly radio-friendly becoming a huge radio hit. One listen of his self-titled debut album and a bunch of tracks jumped out: From Eden, It Will Come Back, Jackie and Wilson and Angel Of Small Death and the Codeine Scene among them. I'm really happy to see him reaching this level of success and look forward to future projects. 9. Foo Fighters Charting Songs: 7 Biggest Hit: These Days [PK: 2 WC: 23]My Foo Fighters consumption was split two ways this year. The first half was dedicated to catching up on what I missed from Wasting Light. While Rope and Walk were familiar standouts by February, tracks like These Days and Bridge Burning were passed over for reasons that I can't really explain. When rumors began to swirl about the 8th Foo record, it only built more hype and allowed These Days to rise all the way to a #2 peak. The release of Sonic Highways was a bit too close to the end of the year to have a massive impact, however Something From Nothing still managed to grab a #3 peak, the position where it still is this week. Expect more successful singles from the album in 2015. 8. alt-J Charting Songs: 9 Biggest Hit: Every Other Freckle [PK: 2 WC: 20*]My experience listening to alt-J has been a very eventful one. Initially I despised the band, the lead singer's voice was too nasally and odd and the music was too unique for my tastes. As time wore on, especially after listening to Tesselate, the band began the long task of growing on me to the point of becoming one of my favorite bands of 2014. An Awesome Wave is a phenomenal album and Breezeblocks' peak (#25) doesn't reflect how much I love that song since it was still in my unsure period with the band. As with the Foos a new 2014 album was met with much anticipation. This Is All Yours wasn't as radio-friendly as their first record and some argued too mellow for them, but I do enjoy the project. Every Other Freckle is by far the best track on the album and I hope it can repeat Left Hand Free's success on Alternative radio. 7. Foster the People Charting Songs: 7 Biggest Hit: Best Friend [PK: 3 WC: 28]
Supermodel was met with mixed reactions, most saying that the album didn't match up to their debut record. Through both individual tracks and the albums as a whole I prefer the second LP more. Coming of Age would have peaked higher if the chart had began in January, so it wasn't until Best Friend was released as the third(?) track from the album that I found the smash hit from the record. Up through the end of 2014, six of the ten full tracks on the album have charted and most have found decent success. Hopefully these guys aren't done on Alternative radio and they can recover with their third album since I really enjoy their sound. 6. Cage the Elephant Charting Songs: 9 Biggest Hit: Spiderhead [PK: 7 WC: 26*]Outside of Ain't No Rest for the Wicked, this year marked a discovery of In One Ear and Back Against the Wall, two tracks from their debut album that I wasn't familiar with. But the real story of the year was my developing love for Melophobia. The album might be my favorite of 2014, and while Spiderhead ended up being the biggest hit of the year, there were so many solid tracks that also deserve recognition. Even tracks like Take It Or Leave It which I wasn't initially big on have now grown on me quite a bit. I'm glad to see this group still having great success at the top of the format and hope their future projects are more in line with this record's sound instead of their first two.

5. Arctic MonkeysCharting Songs: 7 Biggest Hit: R U Mine? [PK: 8 WC: 23]I've found this whole experience has involved me displaying my pre-2012 musical ignorance multiple times, which I'm not sure I'm okay with but that's the way it is. So I knew about Fluorescent Adolescent from these guys before AM dropped, but that's about it. Towards the end of 2013 when I heard Do I Wanna Know? on the radio it stuck with me through most of 2014, though my favorite from the album is R U Mine? (which I'm glad to see is finally picking up its deserved success on Alt as the 3rd single). Other tracks from past albums like I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor also charted throughout the year. Unless new material drops, look for the Monkeys to have some older cuts I wasn't aware of chart during 2015. 4. The Black Keys Charting Songs: 9 Biggest Hit: Gotta Get Away [PK: 3 WC: 30]Hey look! An artist I knew a decent amount about before starting the chart. Little Black Submarines was a #1 hit in the early weeks of 2014, but with the release of Turn Blue the focus shifted to new material. Fever was a bit of a quick burner, and Gotta Get Away was the opposite, spending 30 weeks on the chart. The album was disappointing for some, but I find the more I go back to it the more it grows on me. Weight Of Love didn't really get its chance in 2014 (though it might make the YEC in 2015 if it continues at the rate it's set so far), but it's my favorite song from the album at this moment. I look forward to a new album from the group though I have no idea when that's coming. 3. Broken Bells Charting Songs: 6 Biggest Hit: After the Disco [PK: 1 WC: 31]Holding On For Life was the discovery track here, but its run (and eventual #5 peak) was blocked a bit when After the Disco was first listened to less than a week later. The groove of that track is killer, and it managed to spend 4 weeks atop the chart. Other tracks from their album to make appearances included Control and Perfect World, and two songs from their debut album manged to hit two, the singles The Ghost Inside and The High Road. I hope the dynamite combination of James Murphy and Danger Mouse continue making solid projects, and if they manage anything as catchy as After the Disco again it will assuredly hit #1 on the chart. 2. Fitz and the Tantrums Charting Songs: 10 Biggest Hit: The Walker [PK: 3 WC: 28]
So quick story, I really didn't like Out Of My League when I first heard it. Firstly, WRFF (my local Alt station), wouldn't stop playing it (actually they still have a problem with that but thankfully Fool's Gold has helped out a bit) so I was getting sick of hearing it all the time. But as I like to give bands a few chances before writing them off, I looked into what other songs they had to offer. When I discovered The Walker, right before I joined Pulse here and as it was climbing up Alternative as the second single, it clicked right away. That song is probably the #1 song that got shafted from the weekly chart's late 2014 start. It would have had a few weeks at #1 and an even longer chart run. Album-wise, I'd say I like the sound of Picking Up The Pieces more but the individual tracks of More Than Just A Dream more. So maybe they'll find a way to fuse that for the third record and make it even better. 1. Portugal. The Man Charting Songs: 15(!) Biggest Hit: Modern Jesus [PK: 1 WC: 29]I feel like this paragraph could easily get out of hand with how much I love this band, so I'll try to keep it short. After discovering their existence in late March with the fantastic track Modern Jesus, I quickly scrambled to listen to everything I could by these guys. Evil Friends is an outstanding record, and the fact that they managed to put out an album a year until very recently is crazy. Portugal. The Man has quickly ascended to my Top 10, probably even Top 5 favorite artists of all time with their extensive backlog of content and I look forward to anything they'll release in the future. (in fact I've heard rumors they're recording in the studio now so a 2015 album would be great before I run out of songs to chart). It would be too hard (and way too long) to go through all of the great individual tracks so just take this as my recommendation to check out Evil Friends if you haven't already. It wouldn't surprise me to see them in this position in 52 weeks.

Alright, so the artists countdown is finished and we're on to the Top 50 songs! I'll just have a quick 1-2 sentence writeup about each track until we hit the Top 10, where the writeups will look a little more like the artist writeups were. Thanks for following along so far. Top Songs of 2014 (#50 - 41) 50. Seether ~ Same Damn Life Run: 60-41-31-26-20-17-13-10-7-9-14-20-29-39-36-42-49-53-... PK: 7 WC: 18*
This album was my first introduction to Seether outside of one or two tracks, so it's awesome that the first two singles were so fantastic. This one maybe was hurt a little by the longevity of the first single, but still managed a nice Top 10 peak and at least a 20 week run. 49. The Black Keys ~ Fever Run: 65-44-31-19-10-8-8-8-9-9-13-21-31-40-42-47-58-68-83-off PK: 8 WC: 19
It's hard to call this disappointing, since I think it's a good song, but it was a bit of a striking change from the singles of past albums. But it didn't have the punch of El Camino's singles so that's what was the difference between a #8 peak and a 2-week #1 like Little Black Submarines. Still enjoyable though, just got really overplayed at its peak so had a fast burn. 48. Coldplay ~ Magic Run: 77-71-59-44-33-26-20-14-10-8-6-11-14-20-26-32-41-54-64-80-96-off
PK: 6 WC: 21
This one was a solid first single off of a mostly forgettable album. Just enough longing in the song so it doesn't fall into the realm of whiny and keeps its meaning. Normally songs that have minimal instrumentation don't really click with me but this one managed to fight to a #6 peak. It's a shame A Sky Full of Stars became much more successful, because I can't stand that song. 47. Cage the Elephant ~ Back Against the Wall Run: 44-18-8-4-3-3-5-7-8-11-18-26-35-48-56-59-69-83-93-off PK: 3 WC: 19
One of the few classic tracks to make the list, this one had a really strong start (#44 debut) before fizzling out in the Top 10. The transition between verse and chorus is built well, and after review it's now my favorite track off of their first album. These guys grew on me so much throughout the year (not that I didn't like them but I wasn't really familiar outside of the big hits) and now I can call them one of my favorite current bands. 46. Royal Blood ~ Out Of The Black Run: 86-78-71-45-19-10-5-4-4- 2-2-8-12-18-25-39-53-58-68-80-95-off PK: 2 WC: 21The track that started Royal Blood's dominance on the chart almost didn't make it. Spending six weeks bubbling under and then taking a few to gain traction in the main chart, it may have missed #1 but it paved the way for tracks like Little Monster to come through and destroy the chart in later months. These guys blew up over the year so if you were interested you probably checked them out, but if you've enjoyed one of the tracks off of their self-titled debut give the full album a listen. You won't be disappointed. 45. Death From Above 1979 ~ Trainwreck 1979 Run: 81-73-68-56-40-25-15-13-8-8-8-9-14-17-26-32-40-48-55-62-76-... PK: 8 WC: 21*
These guys jumped onto my radar in 2014, I had never heard of them prior to this single and it popped out right away. The appeal of them releasing their debut in 2004 and then taking a decade-long break before the sophomore effort was there too. It's criminal that this couldn't make it to Top 10 on both Billboard and Mediabase, but there are some good cuts left in the album so maybe they'll surprise everyone down the road.
44. Foals ~ Inhaler Run: 79-61-52-40-27-18-13-11-11-10-10-11-16-24-32-37-43-52-64-76-87-100-off PK: 10 WC: 22
Back in the days of the daily chart this song Bubbled Under but never charted, and it took over half a year for it to reappear and make the main chart. The hard-hitting chorus propelled the song to a #10 peak (also, this song is way better than My Number, why is that one their most popular track?) on my chart and had a decent chart life. 43. Kongos ~ Come With Me Now Run: 15-12-9-9-8-7-6-8-14-19-26-32-40-40-46-60-64-71-80-94-off PK: 6 WC: 20
These guys were the first breakout newbies on Alternative in 2014, and this song took over for most of Spring before a modest Pop crossover over the summer. This probably wouldn't have peaked any higher but might have had a few more weeks on the chart. Everyone talks about it but the accordion makes the song. Hope these guys aren't a one-album wonder on the format, they were a breath of fresh air to Alternative. 42. Aloe Blacc ~ The Man Run: 33-35-37-38-32-25-14-6-3-2-3-7-9-15-31-37-54-74-off PK: 2 WC: 18
Aloe Blacc's big charge into the mainstream after his feature on Avicii's summer smash. After loving I Need A Dollar I didn't like this as much, but I guess it still managed to peak at #2. Still quite a catchy song that hopefully got a bunch of people to listen to the rest of Blacc's discography. I think other tracks like Ticking Bomb or Love Is The Answer might have deserved the success this track got. 41. Nine Inch Nails ~ Came Back Haunted Run: 69-54-38-30-24-18-14-10-10-7-5-5-7-11-11-15-20-... PK: 5 WC: 17*
The track that got me into the current Nine Inch Nails phase of my chart. Thanks to a old 2013 Alternative video this was brought to my attention and managed to spend several weeks in the Top 10. It also may have contributed to my hot shot debut this week's discovery and charting. Another example of artist discovery from this chart, which is what I love most about this whole process. Hope there's more NiN material in the future.

Carnivore claims the #1 position from Uptown Funk after three weeks, but this battle isn't really over yet. Both songs have a fairly equal shot at topping the chart next week, so stay tuned. Starset becomes the second group to have two #1 hits (behind Portugal. the Man) and also breaks the record for longest climb to #1 at 13 weeks (old record was Tongues with 12 weeks). In third position for the fourth consecutive week (which might be a record for weeks at a non-#1 peak, not sure) is Something From Nothing. It won't be hitting the Top 2 but it's spent eight weeks in the Top 10 so far, which is pretty impressive. Under Pressure and Stunner swap positions at #'s 4 and 5, though both probably still have some life left in them. Robert DeLong's Long Way Down moves from 10 -> 6, and stands a chance at #1 weeks down the road. The Business Of Emotion falls one position, it will probably last through March when Big Data's album drops. Only moves up another position and will probably have a similar track to Big Data's second single. Only new Top 10 track is Smooth Sailing from Queens Of The Stone Age. I've been really getting into them recently, especially past material that I had missed. Like Clockwork... is a fantastic album, and several singles should see runs in the future. Finally, Little Monster spends its (likely) last week in the Top 10, this its 14th in the top group. Many of the debuts this week aren't classified as currents, the Hot Shot being no exception. Schism from Tool enters at #50, which is the highest debut in a while. I heard a few Tool tracks months ago but they didn't click for some reason (maybe the videos distracted me) but this one jumped into heavy rotation this week and earned a nice entry position. Representative of my QOTSA kick, Little Sister is in at #63, and should rise alongside If I Had A Tail to fight for the next Top 10 hit. Maybe they'll be the next artist to dominate the chart. A follow-up to a current Top 5 hit, Logic's Buried Alive joins at #78. I'll have to check out Under Pressure at this rate since I've liked everything I've heard so far. Black Treacle is an older Arctic Monkeys cut to make the chart. It might usher in a bunch of older tracks as I make the effort to learn about their whole discography. The third Bad Suns track to chart, We Move Like The Ocean links up at #93. The final two tracks to chart are a pair of ex-Bubbling Under songs. Peaks and Troughs enters at #97 and St. Patrick from Pvris slots in at #99. Both will struggle to make headway initially but if they hang around they could move upwards. The Pvris track spent nine weeks Bubbling Under, which is the T-2nd longest run on the chart for a song that eventually made the main chart. Two 26-week charting tracks leave together, as Fools Gold and Spiderhead finally exit the chart. The #1 Bubbling Under track is Johnny Cash's Hurt, which will probably debut next week. Recurrent #1 goes to Supermassive Black Hole from Muse, which I've been playing a lot this week for no particular reason other than it's a great track. Thank you for all of your comments on my year-end chart and I'll be finishing up the Top 40 songs this week. :) The Chart ~ January 7th, 2015 LW | | PK | WC | Song | Artist | 2 | | 1 | 13 | Carnivore | Starset (1 Week @ #1) | 1 | | 1 | 7 | Uptown Funk | Mark Ronson ft. Top Songs of 2014 (#40 - 31) 40. Frank Turner ~ Recovery Run: 62-36-28-20-15-13-8-5-5-4- 3-3-5-7-12-17-... PK: 3 WC: 16*
Another song that I discovered around the same time as Came Back Haunted, the lyrics are what stick out most to me in this song. Frank Turner's initial uneasiness transforms into a fiery confidence to get back up after failing. Haven't heard much else from Turner and that's on my musical bucket list for 2015. 39. Portugal. The Man ~ Got It All (This Can't Be Living Now) Run: 64-55-45-39-33-27-27-26-23-21-16-17-17-24-30-33-44-39-44-50-60-... PK: 16 WC: 21*
I think I heard this one in a commercial or something before queuing it up for the first time. Either that or the song commands a sense of familiarity on the first listen. Maybe this should have peaked a bit higher but the longevity did compensate. This was probably my second favorite cut from this album. For my favorite, keep scrolling down. 38. Hozier ~ From Eden Run: 91-88-79-68-62-40-32-17-14-9-7-4-4-6-12-18-29-31-32-39-48-... PK: 4 WC: 21*
Hozier's album is absolutely stacked. Barring Take Me To Church (which you'll find a bit later in the countdown), there are so many good tracks that I'm not sure if they'll get enough credit on my chart. Focusing on the AAA follow-up single though, Hozier's soulful voice soars above the smooth guitar licks. This one probably won't have the pop success Take Me To Church did but there are other candidates that have a chance.
37. C2C ~ Down The Road Run: 45-29-20-15-10-7-6-6-8-8-10-14-16-23-24-24-29-... PK: 6 WC: 17*
I don't say this about many songs, but this one should have peaked higher than it did. It still holds the T-9th highest debut ever, and it's so catchy despite being unconventional for an Alternative radio track. I just started to check out the rest of these guys' material so maybe they'll have another hit that can avenge this one's peak. 36. Arctic Monkeys ~ R U Mine? Run: 8-8-8-8-9-10-13-16-19-23-27-31-35-38-42-46-53-59-66-83-93-96-100-off PK: 8 WC: 23So this track would have fought The Walker for #1 in the early weeks of 2014 if my weekly chart had existed then. It's left with a peak of #8, but so far it's lasted 26 weeks on the Recurrents chart and topped that chart for six of them. I'm so happy it's finally getting its deserved Alternative success now. Alex Turner's sultry vocals mixed with the tight, heavy instrumentation create a track with zero burn rate. It's my most played track on last.fm over the past 12 months and that title might last for a while. 35. Portugal. The Man ~ Sleep Forever Run: 76-67-54-41-31-23-16-8-5-3-5-4-8-13-23-34-47-53-62-63-75-86-92-off PK: 3 WC: 23
It's a tough call, but I'd say this is my favorite track from In The Mountain In The Cloud. It has this immensely powerful build throughout the song, provided by a strong orchestral section and John Gourley's vocal. This album is stacked at the beginning and end and complimented in the middle with a gooey, satisfying filling. 34. Martin Garrix ~ Animals Run: 84-83-68-54-38-20-8-5-5-5-6-10-15-21-25-31-31-38-48-57-65-80-87-off PK: 5 WC: 23
One of the earliest new discoveries after the chart started, I had heard the five-second snippet of this song from chart videos but never gave it a chance until early February. While I think there is some obvious similarity in the structure of Garrix's tracks, he does have a few standouts, this and Wizard among them. Curious to see how he'll fare with future commercial releases, I was shocked that a song with virtually no lyrics got such heavy airplay. 33. Jason Derulo ft. 2 Chainz ~ Talk Dirty Run: 1-1-2-3-4-5-5-10-12-17-19-26-32-37-43-48-55-69-85-off PK: 1 WC: 19
The chart's first ever #1 hit, the catchiness of the sax (not trumpet, despite whoever directed the video thought) groove finally won me over months after I initially heard it. Coincidentally happened to be right around the time I started the Top 100 chart too. Also anyone remember the really odd HAC edit of this song with an extended sax bridge instead of the rap verse? Poor 2 Chainz.
32. Portugal. The Man ~ Creep In A T-Shirt Run: 47-29-19-13-10-9-9-7-10-14-17-19-24-29-36-43-49-56-65-78-92-off PK: 7 WC: 21
This track may have had more success if it wasn't the fourth track from Evil Friends to make its debut. The biting vocals with the pounding piano drill into your ear canal until it's firmly lodged there for months. This got sent for AAA adds at some point but they never materialized, which is a shame but it was late in the album's life cycle. 31. Tame Impala ~ Feels Like We Only Go Backwards Run: 72-64-54-41-26-17-11-6-3-4-4-8-12-17-21-26-30-42-50-63-70-90-98-off PK: 3 WC: 23
Still don't know much about Tame Impala despite charting two of their songs. This track is a psychedelic-tinged ballad that swirls around you as you listen. Managed to squeeze in to a #3 peak in a bit of a slow week, I've forgotten about this one in recent months. This writeup just made me queue it up on Spotify though, so there's a victory.

Top Songs of 2014 (#30 - 21) 30. Cage the Elephant ~ Spiderhead Run: 82-63-47-30-15-11-9- 7-7-9-15-19-29-33-41-50-57-55-50-55-54-62-65-75-89-99-... PK: 7 WC: 26*
So maybe I'm blinded by my love for this song but I'm upset it wasn't chosen as a single. Maybe CtE will go four singles deep this time around and it has a shot, but otherwise... The "skipping" part of the song with the guitars transitioning into the solo still jumps out at me after dozens of listens. This one may have not peaked high, but it certainly had longevity on its side. 29. Atlas Genius ~ Trojans Run: 73-33-17-10-6-3-2-3-4-6-9-15-20-27-32-38-46-54-64-74-85-... PK: 2 WC: 21*
I'd heard of "If So" but not this one, and I'm not really sure how that happened seeing as this was the huge hit. This song might be the best at getting stuck in your head for days straight. Just missed out on hitting #1, trapped behind My Demons. Still has cemented itself as a WebChart™ classic track that will be spun on playlists for years to come. 28. Kongos ~ I'm Only Joking Run: 74-59-50-38-21-14-10-8-5-5-4-4-7-13-21-28-39-45-54-61-73-87-96-off PK: 4 WC: 23
Along with DFA 1979, I'm baffled this couldn't hit Top 10 Alternative. I'm sure the huge recurrent airplay from the lead single hurt its chances but I think it's a better track. The drums are what make this one stand out, creating a sense of foreboding that clashes with the puzzling lyrics. Hopefully these guys rebound for their second album and can manage at least a pair of big Alternative hits.
27. The Black Keys ~ Little Black Submarines Run: 11-6-1-2-1-2-4-5-9-12-15-20-26-34-40-43-51-63-75-86-97-off PK: 1 WC: 21
Emerging as the first song to grow into the #1 spot after the daily chart, The Black Keys managed to sneak in two non-consecutive weeks at #1 before Turn Blue could drop later in the year. Still my favorite song on El Camino despite how packed that album is. Also regardless of how many times people say it I don't hear the "Stairway To Heaven" connection beyond basic song structure.
26. Royal Blood ~ Little Monster Run: 55-35-21-11-6- 1-1-1-1-1-2-2-4-3-6-5-7-... PK: 1 WC: 17*This one is a bit underranked but only due to its late debut date (as a quick example, if the week after this counted in the chart it would already be up to #19). Royal Blood's debut album hit with force, and this was my favorite track from it after many repeated listens. The sinister vocals are unsettling at times, and the pounding drums and back-and-forth basslines only serve to add to the mood. Hope this one gets released as the third radio single but I could see one of at least four other tracks doing fine in its place. 25. Broken Bells ~ Holding On For Life Run: 56-33-21-13-7-7-6-5-6-9-11-16-22-26-31-38-42-51-58-66-73-79-90-98-99-off PK: 5 WC: 25
This song was disadvantaged by another track from the same artist stealing its spotlight a week later (no spoilers), but on its own merits is a fantastic track. Harkening back to the disco era with the falsetto vocals, James Mercer and Danger Mouse pool their talents to create a dancefloor smash. This managed to hit #1 on AAA but I wish it had a little more success on Alternative. I think it's much better than The High Road, which is their biggest hit.
24. Soul Coughing ~ Super Bon Bon Run: 53-37-20-14-8-2-1-2-3-5-6-10-17-19-24-29-28-32-40 PK: 1 WC: 19*
Mike Doughty's solo work was among my regularly spun artists, but this year was the time I finally looked into his old band and I'm sorry I hadn't sooner. The visceral chorus of this song almost forces you to mimic Doughty's erratic motions as displayed in the music video. The memorable bass mixed with Doughty's trademark, nearly spoken word vocals combine to make an extraordinary track that I wish had a bit more pull today. 23. Foo Fighters ~ These Days Run: 57-42-26-12-7-4-3-2-2-4-7-9-16-22-22-29-36-46-56-71-80-94-off PK: 2 WC: 22
Due to the late 2014 release of Sonic Highways, this ended up as the Foos best-charting track for the year. Along with Bridge Burning, These Days was picked up as part of a short selection of old Foo Fighters tracks I missed for whatever reason. Not much to say about this one other than it follows the standard Grohl hit single format and delivers on that format. 22. Nico & Vinz ~ Am I Wrong? Run: 67-44-23-14-11-7-6-5-5-3-4-9-17-20-26-32-37-45-52-62-71-83-95-99-off PK: 3 WC: 24
This song still hasn't burned on me, despite radio hugging it to death throughout the year. By the time it left the chart it had one of the five longest runs ever. (since surpassed) I understand why these guys aren't getting a follow-up hit but it's a shame they'll be relegated to one-hit wonderland. Arguably my favorite strictly Pop hit of the year. 21. Manchester Orchestra ~ Top Notch Run: 71-58-48-37-22-16-14-11-8-7-11-16-21-27-32-31-30-28-35-45-52-61-70-84-99-off PK: 7 WC: 25
One story I remember reading about these guys is they saved their demos for one of their records under "Lil Bow Wow" so no one would take and use them. So while that's something I always think of when one of their songs comes on, it doesn't overshadow how fantastic this track is. The whining vocals of Andy Hull mix splendidly over the stabbing guitars. Another track that got caught right between Alternative and Active in terms of genre friendliness so failed on both.

Top Songs of 2014 (#20 - 11) 20. Max Frost ~ White Lies Run: 59-38-23-12-3- 2-2-3-3-6-8-9-12-17-23-34-42-52-57-64-76-89-98-off PK: 2 WC: 23 Max Frost doesn't have a huge wealth of material, but I've really enjoyed most of what I've heard so far. White Lies was the radio track and the biggest standout from his Low High Low EP. Fit in a pair of weeks at #2 (blocked by Big Data) on my chart but didn't really get love on Alternative radio, just barely cracking the Top 40. Really digging his new release, Paranoia, so hopefully that can translate to bigger success in the future.
19. Fitz and the Tantrums ~ Fools Gold Run: 74-68-60-49-39-31-26-22-16-16-16-14-18-21-20-19-22-31-35-39-44-47-56-67-79-97-... PK: 14 WC: 26*
Now we arrive at the highest year-end charting single not to hit the Top 10 on my chart throughout the year. I charted most of More Than Just A Dream in February 2014 so the fact that this was even available to chart after it was announced as the third radio single is surprising. It had a methodical rise to the 14th slot after 12 weeks on the chart and a smooth descent downwards. There isn't a bad track on that album, but I've charted nearly every song already so they'll have to wait until a third project to make waves once more. 18. Childish Gambino ~ 3005 Run: 58-45-29-19-16-12-8-6-5- 4-5-5-5-9-11-15-22-32-44-56-69-82-93-100-off PK: 4 WC: 24
I really hated Heartbeat. Also didn't like what I heard out of Camp. So when this single was announced I wasn't that thrilled. But it only took one or two listens for this song to make its mark on my chart this year. The hook is infectious and I have no issues with Gambino's slightly erratic flow (maybe I should give his earlier stuff a re-listen with the new perspective, idk) this time around. It peaked a bit lower than I initially desired but had nice Top 10 longevity.
17. J. Cole ft. Amber Coffman & Cults ~ She Knows Run: 39-20-11-6-3-2-2-2-3-9-13-19-23-25-27-36-41-45-53-61-66-73-82-89-97-off PK: 2 WC: 25
If I have to pick one, this is the song that I regret never placing at #1. I may be looking at this in hindsight instead of the weeks they fought for the #1 slot though. This was the first ever Hot Shot Debut and still has the third highest debut in the chart's history (#39). J. Cole grew on me quite a bit in 2014, I hadn't really acknowledged him until this year but now I'd say he's one of the best when it comes to the biggest mainstream rappers. 16. Starset ~ My Demons Run: 57-25-10- 1-1-1-2-3-2-2-3-4-6-11-14-17-20-21-27-... PK: 1 WC: 19*Another late 2014 discovery that may have deserved Top 10 honors this year (though then I'd have to pick someone to kick out from the Top 10 and I can't really do that, so...), Starset fought their way up the Mediabase Active radio charts for around a year, getting signed and releasing their album in the middle of the song's run. The orchestral elements and booming choruses of Starset's songs and are what I believe sets them apart from other big rock artists. Transmissions is a very solid album and I'd recommend it to anyone who liked any Starset track they've heard so far. 15. Chromeo ~ Jealous (I Ain't With It) Run: 50-30-19-16-13-12-10-8-7-6-6-7-9-11-15-20-29-34-42-52-61-73-91-off PK: 6 WC: 23
I may have said this already about another song, but if I did it's a lie. This is the catchiest song on the chart. Canadian duo Chromeo pumped out this jam that managed to spend a little bit of time in the lower reaches of the CHR radio charts. Listen to this a few times and it won't be leaving your brain for a few weeks. Really weird video for this one too, if you haven't heard the song give it a listen!
14. Portugal. The Man ~ Purple Yellow Red and Blue Run: 62-49-40-28-20-14-11-7-3-1-1-1-3-6-11-17-26-34-40-53-63-71-76-86-100-off PK: 1 WC: 25
Another track from the recently released #1 artists of 2014, Portugal. The Man comes in at #14. Purple Yellow Red and Blue was the second radio track from Evil Friends, though most would probably consider it the lead single after the title track bombed. This established PtM as the first group to have two #1's on the chart, and the trippy vocals and production on the track set it apart from the rest on the record. It's really hard to determine my favorite song from Evil Friends, but this is in strong contention. 13. Beck ~ Say Goodbye Run: 78-61-45-31-16-10-4-1-2-4-6-10-12-14-19-24-29-34-40-42-51-59-67-79-90-95-96-off PK: 1 WC: 27
An unbiased observer of my last.fm account may have placed this song as the least deserving #1 of the year. Being that Beck is my favorite artist of all time and he released his first new album in six years, it was a near-guarantee that one of the tracks would hit #1. You'd be partially right. This did only spend one week at the top but I think it was deserved due to the heavy rotation I had it in at the time. Say Goodbye is my favorite track from Morning Phase, though Blue Moon would have fought for the top spot in January if there was a chart then. Looking forward to Beck's next (more upbeat) project, rumored for an early 2015 release. 12. Damon Albarn ~ Mr. Tembo Run: 76-61-30-12-1-1-2-2-2-4-5-7-10-14-18-22-27-34-43-49-58-65-78-92-off PK: 1 WC: 24
This song is really happy. Juxtaposed against the mournful sound of the rest of Everyday Robots, it's kind of jarring if you're listening to the album front to back. I heard this song as one of the pre-release tracks before the album dropped, so it couldn't make that impression on me. It's a song about a baby elephant, so that's kind of hard to make sad. Grabbed two weeks as the chart's 9th #1 hit. 11. Joywave ft. Kopps ~ Tongues Run:62-50-39-32-26-21-18-15-9-6-3-1-2-3-5-9-18-36-40-50-58-62-70-80-95-off PK: 1 WC: 25
While this song managed to do better than 458 songs on my chart this year, it is stuck in one of the most painful year-end positions at #11. Big Data's #1 Alternative hit prompted a listen of this track, and it delivered. Also the music video for this song is one of the weirder ones of the year, in a good way. So many of these Alternative projects don't have albums out yet (Big Data, Joywave, Max Frost) and I really want them to release a full project since their EPs are so good.

Took a one day break, but here we go. Top Songs of 2014 (#10 - 8) 10. Seether - Words As Weapons Entry Date: 7/30/14 ~ Peak Date: 8/27/14 ~ Peak Position: #1 (3 Weeks) ~ Weeks on Chart: 23* Run: 62-36-15-2-1-1-1-2-3-5-7-10-12-18-24-31-34-40-45-49-52-57-63-... In my opinion, this was the best Active #1 of the year. With driving guitars and punching lyrics, Seether stormed to the peak and created one of the strongest hits of 2014. It's really a shame this couldn't have more success on Alternative, but the format should swing back soon. After knowing very little of this group before this single they've become a staple on my chart. Look for more cuts from Isolate and Medicate on the chart in 2015.
9. alt-J - Every Other Freckle Entry Date: 8/20/14 ~ Peak Date: 11/5/14 ~ Peak Position: #2 ~ Weeks on Chart: 20* Run: 44-32-26-18-13-9-6-5-4-4-3-2-2-3-6-8-6-9-11-12-...
alt-J's first album was a grower, and I won't deny that all three singles from An Awesome Wave didn't have the success on my chart that they maybe deserved. This time around though I didn't have to experience those growing pains. When this song dropped as the third track released from This Is All Yours, it clicked instantly. It's probably the song stylistically closest to their first album and maybe that's why it has dominated so strongly. So many small pieces of this song connect to make a fantastic and cohesive track. That break for the flutes still catches me off sometimes. Expect a snail's descent for this one since it's just starting its climb on Alternative radio, and if their second album continues to grow on me, expect more singles in 2015.
8. Portugal. The Man - Modern Jesus Entry Date: 3/26/14 ~ Peak Date: 5/14/14 ~ Peak Position: #1 (1 week) ~ Weeks on Chart: 29 Run: 47-32-24-20-15-11-9-1-2-2-4-7-13-17-22-25-29-35-43-43-47-53-59-61-68-74-80-89-96-off
The track that started a revolution. Late March was when I pledged to listen to any song that hit Top 50 Alternative so I'd become intimately familiar with the current format. This track was already in its descent at that time but John Baldwin Gourley's vocals cut through that irrelevancy. The introductory guitars, defiantly confident lyrics, and background synths all contribute towards this song's brilliance. Even after loving this song I had no idea it would spawn my #1 artist of 2014 as well as the discovery of many other hit tracks. If as expected they drop an album this year, Portugal. The Man should stay at the forefront of my chart for a very long time.

Top Songs of 2014 (#7 - 6) 7. The Black Keys - Gotta Get Away Entry Date: 5/21/14 ~ Peak Date: 10/8/14 ~ Peak Position: #3 ~ Weeks on Chart: 30 Run: 84-78-77-73-63-53-45-37-30-27-24-28-28-42-30-21-13-8-5-4-3-5-5-13-21-33-40-51-57-81-off
This might have the weirdest run of the year. After Turn Blue was released and I had burned off of Fever, this was my favorite from my first listen. I charted it in late May and it rose to the mid-20's before stalling and beginning a freefall. It nearly fell out of the Top 50 before it was announced as the second radio single. This injected new life into the song, and it flew back to a #3 peak in early October, four and a half months after it entered. Reaching its peak in its 20th week charting (a record); it fell off rather quickly but not after making a mark on my chart's history. The song is really catchy and I'm surprised it peaked so low on Alternative.
6. Fitz and the Tantrums - The Walker Entry Date: 2/5/14 ~ Peak Date: 2/12/14 ~ Peak Position: #3 ~ Weeks on Chart: 28 Run: 4-3-4-5-5-6-3-4-6-8-11-14-15-16-19-23-28-35-39-43-49-54-61-69-76-86-92-97-off
This is the song that set the standard for long-running songs in the future. This song spent four days at #1 on the January daily chart, which set the stage for its debut in the Top 10 once the weekly chart began. Setting most of the chart's early impressive records, including Weeks in Top 10 (10, currently 7th), and Total Weeks Charting (28, currently, T-7th), it was the standout in the first class of 100 songs. The infectious whistling and motivational lyrics invade every corner of your brain and refuse to leave. Also, I really love the sax bridge in this song. A deserved #1 on Alternative and a missed opportunity for a big pop crossover.

Top Songs of 2014 (#5 - 4) 5. Sir Sly - Gold Entry Date: 4/16/14 ~ Peak Date: 8/13/14 ~ Peak Position: #5 ~ Weeks on Chart: 30 Run: 76-63-56-54-48-40-34-25-20-15-15-12-12-13-16-12-8-5-7-11-17-21-33-44-51-60-65-73-81-87-off
The sleeper hit of the year. This never had the breakout status that most songs had (even Gotta Get Away made it to #3), and only managed a #5 peak. However, it did have one of the slowest climbs of the year, spending a long time just below the Top 10 before finally bouncing back into its peak. These guys didn't get too much love on Alternative radio this year, their follow-up track You Haunt Me hasn't done anything and this one couldn't hit the Top 20. They just had a late-night performance recently so hopefully their star is trending up.
4. Hozier - Take Me To Church Entry Date: 6/18/14 ~ Peak Date: 7/9/14 ~ Peak Position: #1 (3 weeks) ~ Weeks on Chart: 29* Run: 49-27-11-1-1-1-2-4-6-10-9-9-15-20-25-33-37-42-42-43-47-49-58-65-71-67-72-78-79
While perusing the top of the AAA radio charts over the summer (something I don't do all that often), I found this song at the top of the list. After one listen, I was hooked. The foreboding tone of the track combined with Hozier's soulful vocals seemed a sure-hit on the format, and I was eager to chart it. Right around the time it made its debut on my chart it started a climb up the Alternative charts that would eventually conclude in a #2 peak. But what I didn't expect is this song going for Pop adds, especially when other songs that seemed to have more pop appeal (Riptide, I Wanna Get Better, Stolen Dance, Dangerous, My Sweet Summer, etc.) were all going for those adds at the same time. Clearly if you're active here or have listened to any radio station in the past few weeks you know how far it exceeded my initial expectations. I'm so happy to see Hozier getting this mainstream success, it's the first time I've liked two songs in the top 3 in the longest time on the Hot 100. As long as they stop playing that stupid upbeat pop mix I'll be happy to hear this song for months to come. It manged three weeks at number one on my chart before a very slow descent to the bottom of the chart.
In the end I couldn't help but drag this out for suspense. Tomorrow I'll have #'s 2 & 3, and the #1 song of the year will be revealed on Friday! Thanks for watching, and stay tuned! :)

Uptown Funk becomes the fourth song to spend 4+ weeks at #1, as it flips back above Carnivore to reclaim the top position. This fight isn't over yet, as I'm expecting Carnivore to be #1 next week. This has been the biggest battle for #1 in the chart's history, and it's not over yet. Logic's Under Pressure moves to the Top 3, a group that had been filled with the same songs for the past three weeks. It should make it to #2 but it might take a few weeks since the Top 2 is so strong right now. Long Way Down moves into fourth position, and should continue to rise. Stunner is kind of trapped in an awkward spot in 5th place, but isn't done just yet so maybe it can stick around a few more weeks. After four straight weeks at #3, Something From Nothing drops all the way to #6. Another case of a high-debuting song missing out on the #1 peak on my chart, but I wouldn't call the peak a disappointment. Smooth Sailing rises to #7, and should peak within the Top 5 easily. This one's the one that seems to keep growing on me with each listen. The Business Of Emotion recedes to #8, I wish radio would start playing this song already. Global Concepts is the new entry to the top group, and Robert DeLong's pair of singles in the Top 10 marks the first time since August 27th where an artists has had two simultaneous Top 10 charters. Finally, Only moves to #10 and should exit the Top 10 next week. I'm sure there will come a time where I'm satisfied with the amount of music I know; accepting that I'll never listen to everything there is out there. This week is not one of those weeks. Reptilia is the Hot Shot, arguably the biggest hit from The Strokes (had only known Last Nite before last week). Julian Casablancas delivers a phenomenal vocal performance on this track, and the guitar riff is insanely catchy. Its debut position of #43 is the T-5th highest ever, which as stated above with the Foo Fighters isn't the best indicator of future chart success. I see this one making Top 3 easily though, time will tell. Second in is another Hozier track, Jackie and Wilson. It Will Come Back hasn't fully clicked for me yet, and a re-listen of the album brought this back to the center of my attention. I can't sing enough praises about Hozier, this one's probably bound for the Top 10. A little further down is Johnny Cash's Hurt at #86. My Nine Inch Nails kick brought me to this song, which I can add to the endless list of embarrassments that I should have known earlier. This song is one of the most emotional I've ever heard, the video matches it perfectly. Next up is a pair of listened to, forgotten, then rediscovered songs. Get Got is another charting Death Grips song that can hopefully get above #90, where the other two tracks have stumbled. Magic Man's Paris is a song that I believe made the Alternative chart a while back but I ignored it. It's catchy but I'm not sure if that's enough for a sustainable run. Ed Sheeran's I See Fire is way better than Thinking Out Loud so it gets the nod for the third X single I've charted. Finally, Juilan Casablancas gets a double debut this week, as his new-ish project with the Voidz debuts at #98, the track being Where No Eagles Fly.Three former Top 10's drop out, Death From Above 1979, Hozier and Atlas Genius all losing a presence on the main chart. Hozier's Take Me To Church manages to snatch Recurrent #1 honors though, so that's a decent consequence. C2C's probable main chart follow-up Happy tops the Bubbling Under chart this week. In other news, Paolo Nutini's Let Me Down Easy won't be debuting on the main chart, but it did just break the record for most weeks Bubbling Under, currently sitting at #24 in its 16th weeks on that chart. The year end chart only has the Top 3 left to reveal, thanks to everyone for following alongand leaving their comments. See you next week! Top Songs of 2014 (#3 - 2) 3. Foster the People - Best Friend Entry Date: 3/19/14 ~ Peak Date: 5/21/14 ~ Peak Position: #3 ~ Weeks on Chart: 28 Run: 49-36-21-15-10-8-8-5-4-3-3-3-4-5-6-8-13-15-19-25-30-37-49-63-71-82-94-100-off
Why everyone decided Torches was flawless and Supermodel was terrible is something I'll never understand. I guess it's something that can be expected with the sophomore record after having a widely successful and praised debut, but it's very unfair in most cases. After the lukewarm reception of Coming of Age despite its flying up the charts, this track was released as the second single. It turned out to be another polarizing choice, some couldn't stand the vocals (though I'm not sure how those people loved Torches so much), while some (like myself), loved the release. On my chart, it never hit #1 and never really challenged for the top spot. After a strong debut in the Top 50, it rose slowly but confidently into the top bracket and refused to move for months, spending a massive 12 weeks in the Top 10. I really hope Foster the People aren't on their way out of Alternative. I'm sure their next lead single will get a shot, but if it doesn't connect they might be done, which is a shame since I like most of their material.
2. Broken Bells - After the Disco Entry Date: 3/19/14 ~ Peak Date: 4/2/14 ~ Peak Position: #1 (4 weeks) ~ Weeks on Chart: 31 Run: 29-9-1-1-1-2-1-2-3-4-6-7-5-10-12-15-16-21-24-29-32-35-43-51-54-61-69-73-83-91-99-off
This song is one of the most underrated singles of 2014. Why they chose Control for the second radio single instead of this is an enigma that may forever elude me. James Mercer's falsetto vocals blast in front of a subdued disco groove that makes it near-impossible for you to stay stationary. This went for both AAA and Alternative adds at some point but never clicked on either format. Danger Mouse attaches himself to another successful project, his star is clearly continuing to rise as the years go on. Holding the current untied record for shortest climb to #1 (3 weeks), as well as the second longest run in chart history, it dominated throughout its entire run. Listen to this song if you haven't already, it's fantastic and will be stuck in your head for days. Tomorrow, I'll reveal the #1 track of 2014!

Top Songs of 2014 (#1!) 1. Big Data ft. Joywave - Dangerous Entry Date: 5/7/14 ~ Peak Date: 6/4/14 ~ Peak Position: #1 (5 Weeks) ~ Weeks on Chart: 35* Run: 48-29-12-4-1-1-1-1-1-2-2-2-3-3-4-6-4-6-8-10-11-16-22-27-32-37-40-42-47-53-56-61-68-73-77-...
For those who have been following the chart throughout the year, this probably isn't a huge surprise. Whatever I say within the contents of this paragraph won't accurately convey how much I love this song. The bassline is fantastically addictive, and Joywave's vocals contain the perfect amount of creepiness to suggest the song's true meaning. The Big Data project writes songs about the internet culture, and the pitfalls of its rising popularity in society. This song managed to sneak in a week at #1 on Alternative radio, though I think it deserved a few more weeks before Riptide dominated the fall. A failed pop crossover saw the song lost in the shuffle of Take Me To Church, Riptide and Stolen Dance, though it's still doing decently on HAC. Despite the song's commercial failings, Big Data's album is one of my most anticipated albums of 2015; I'm excited to see where Alan Wilikis applies his musical talents next. On my chart the song flew to the peak in five weeks, topped the chart for five more, and then spent an unmatched 17 weeks in the Top 10. As of my writing of this post it's still charting and might have a shot at 40 weeks.
Thanks to anyone who followed my countdown, I'm looking forward to my 2015 edition where I'll have a full 52 weeks under my belt.

Hey everyone, sorry for being late this week, I'm back at college so was a little delayed. This semester's going to be a bit busy for me so hopefully I'll be able to keep this up. Next week is the chart's 52nd week, making it a full year without missing one. Wish me luck for the semester and let's get to the news.
Carnivore flips back above Uptown Funk for the likely final time. It should enjoy a decent run at the top and might even surpass My Demons' tenure (3 weeks). Under Pressure and Long Way Down hold steady at #'s 3 and 4, though Robert DeLong has more momentum than Logic at the moment. Josh Homme and the Queens of the Stone Age make a move into the Top 5, as Smooth Sailing rises two positions. Stunner falls out of the Top 5 and seems to be done rising but should spend a few more weeks in the Top 10. Global Concepts moves to #7, it should challenge for the Top 5. Something From Nothing drops to #8, ready to be succeeded by I Am A River in a few weeks. The Business Of Emotion nears the end of a low-peaking but lengthy Top 10 run, sliding to #9. Finally, the lone new entry comes from Catfish and the Bottlemen, as Kathleen moves from #16 to #10. It has a pretty good shot at being #1 in a month or so.
Only six entries this week since I was busy, and one of which is a re-entry. New Pulse poster Hoodie Allen is the Hot Shot at #56 with All About It. This one probably won't end up in the Top 10 but it's a catchy solid track. Next debut is all the way down at #88, where Deep Six joins after three weeks Bubbling Under. This one's going to have a really big jump next week. The aforementioned re-entry is Kongos' third single, I Want To Know. It's been off for 29 weeks, which is pretty crazy but it still fulfills my re-entry rules (for those curious, check the first post of the thread). It's old run was only 6 weeks with a small peak of #82. It's also only the second song to re-enter the main chart (I Don't Want To Be Here Anymore from Rise Against is the other). It should outpeak its old run easily, which is sort of the goal of the re-entry anyway. Starset's fourth single on my chart, It Has Begun enters at #93. Give it a little time to grow, they haven't had a bad single yet. 311 jumped out of nowhere to have a strong track in Five of Everything, and it spurred Sand Dollars to an entry this week. Finally, Guns and Dogs from Portugal. The Man's The Satanic Satanist joins at #98. This might fizzle out a little early but deserved a main chart appearance in this slow week.
C2C's Happy remains #1 Bubbling Under, but should enter next week. Take Me To Church is Recurrent #1 again, but should fall next week when the largest chart titan crumbles. All of the dropouts had lengthy runs and there's some more clearing out to do, so there should be at least 7 next week. Thanks for reading!
