You seriously don't know about Rudimental? Are they big in Europe? Yeah, Feel the Love was a pretty big hit over here.

That Take That (that was repetitive) song was their only hit in the US, so I hear it sometimes on AC stations.

#15. Lady Gaga - Poker Face 3 weeks at #1 in 2009 (#2 of 32 for '09)
"Just Dance" caught my attention in mid 2008 due to its oddness and made me wonder who this Lady Gaga person was. "Just Dance" was a fine introductory single, but "Poker Face" took things one step further. If my personal chart went far back enough to cover the entirety of the part of my life that I've followed pop music; this song would've been the biggest song ever on it. My chart began right when this song's domination would've ended, unfortunately. It's most certainly a song that I was beyond obsessed with for a long period of time. It's insanely catchy. A lot of the hooks are made from stuttering multiple words. It's something Gaga would do a lot, but it's a trick that worked really well. There's quotable Gaga-isms like "Russian Roulette is not the same without a gun" and "I'm bluffin' with my muffin; I'm not lying, I'm just stunnin' with my love-glue-gunnin'". That bridge with the half rapping is so random that I love it; and because of the nonsensical lyrics in it. Gaga has publicly explained this song before. She has said that the so-called "muffin" is a metaphor for her..er.. lady parts, and that body part is what's showing its "poker face". It's keeping secret from her love interest where her sexuality is leaning. It's an interesting meaning, that's for sure, but it can be taken into a more broad meaning. Like more simply about putting on a poker face in order to gain control in a relationship. In other words, by not letting her lover know what's truly going through her head, her lover has nothing he can use against her. Or it could be seen as her acting all mysterious as a way of luring this guy in. I don't know. One thing's for sure, it's one catchy pop song. Also, there's a lot of gambling references in the song. Like it's a gamble to be with her. The big question is how well has this aged on me. I'd say pretty well, but not enough to be top 10.

#14. Robyn with Kleerup - With Every Heartbeat 1 week at #1 in 2007 (#1 of 17 for '07)
I'll never know how Robyn managed to top the charts in 2007, but am I ever ecstatic that she did! This song is just flawless. It plays with song structure. There really isn't a chorus in this. But certain lines are repeated like "but I don't look back" and the song title. I love the production especially. I love how Robyn's voice sounds a bit shaky on this. It makes her sound broken. But she also sounds firm in trying to convince herself to move on. That's why she keeps saying "but I don't look back". She knows that this relationship has lost all hope, and nothing they do will fix it, but she's incapable of moving on from it.

#13. No Doubt - Don't Speak 3 weeks at #1 in 1997 (#1 of 24 for '97)
One of the defining songs of the 90's in my opinion. This was a massive radio hit in North America and it's one of the earliest songs I can remember hearing a lot during my childhood. The first verses is very subtle, but then when that chorus hits for the first time it's one big explosion. That chorus is one big emotional outburst. Gwen Stefani does a really good job at expressing the emotion of it. She sings it with so much force. This song is about feeling miserable knowing that this relationship is about to crumble. Gwen is desperately pleading to be spared the truth. The chorus says it all: "Don't speak; I know just what you're saying; So please stop explaining; Don't tell me 'cause it hurts..". It's a really relateable feeling/situation to be in. The second verse changes it up from the first one and starts the louder instrumental halfway through the verse. And then after the instrumental interlude part, the song goes back into subtleness with "You and me I can see us dying, are we?".. but it's all to set up that hard hitting chorus one last time.

#12. Spice Girls - Viva Forever 2 weeks at #1 in 1998 (#2 of 30 for '98)
This is my favourite Spice Girls song. And honestly this might be my favourite girl group ballad/mid-tempo ever. There's just something about this dreary atmosphere of this that gets to me. It's about never giving up on trying to recapture the feeling of a special moment you'll never have again.

#11. Madonna - Hung Up 3 weeks at #1 in 2005 (#2 of 25 for '05)
For a song that samples ABBA, and borrows 70's disco sounds, it sure sounded really fresh and futuristic in 2005. It really stood out at the time. This went #1 in practically every country other than the US. I think because US radio was so immersed in Urban music and weren't ready for something so electro/dance. "Hung Up" sounded incredible then, and it's aged really well. This was made to be a dance floor anthem. And it succeeds in doing just that. It was a return to form for Madonna after the American Life era, and it sure felt like a comeback at the time. Even though she wasn't gone for that long. "Hung Up" starts off with nothing but a ticking clock; signifying that the slowness of time. And from there the production gradually builds its way into the song. It's one of those songs that begins with the chorus. With all that build up beforehand, there needs to be a climax (a verse would take too long), so chorus first is the only way it would work. And what a chorus it is! From there, the first verse is short and wastes no time jumping back into the "time goes by so slowly" refrain, and back to the chorus right after. After the second verse, it pulls a surprise and goes into a separate bridge of "I can't keep on waiting for you..". After the second chorus, it does that thing I love in a lot of dance songs where everything slows down to a hault (right back to the ticking clock) and then just builds right back into the explosiveness. I love how this song goes from something as minimalistic as that clock to something as explosive as the rest of the song.
Top 10 starts tomorrow!!!

These past few sets have been incredible. I've liked everything I like, but I just have to comment on some of these. "Umbrella", "Feel the Love", "Bleeding Love", "Don't Speak", "Hung Up", "Poker Face", "Gangsta's Paradise" (yay 1995), and "Mad World" are all just so good.

It was just a basic rehash of something that didn't need another basic rehash. I gave a shoutout to "Gangsta's Paradise" because it was the top song of 1995 in the US.

Great to see "Say You'll Be There", "Umbrella", "Feel the Love" <3, "Poker Face", "Don't Speak" <3, "Viva Forever" and "Hung Up" in the Top 20. Anyway, if I'm not making a mistake, so amazing to see three tracks (two, actually, although he has most of the credits in the remaining one) from my favourite artists inside the Top 10!

#10. Sugababes - Push The Button 3 weeks at #1 in 2005 (#1 of 25 for '05)
"Push The Button" might honestly be my favourite Sugababes song ever. It just defines pop perfection to me. I find it funny that this knocked "Don't Cha" off the top spot since both songs follow similar themes (flirtation) and both are by girl groups. But, "Don't Cha" is in-your-face, arrogant, and classless. Whereas "Push The Button" isn't. It's about this guy they're interested in, and they're dropping every subtle cue they can to try to grab his attention, but he continues to be utterly oblivious to any of it, and they're frustrated. They want him to "push the button" (in other words: they want him to reciprocate). If he takes too long to do so, then he's going to "miss the freak that [they] control". Which is a lyric I love for some reason. This song was produced by Dallas Austin, who was more known for producing R&B songs, and this isn't very R&B so it's interesting that he produced it. It's a killer production, though. Especially in the pre-chorus. Like most Sugababes songs, all three members get their moment to shine. Heidi doing the first verse (which she usually didn't do), Mutya doing the second verse, and Keisha doing the pre-chorus and the spoken word middle 8. I like the video too.

#9. Nelly Furtado - Maneater 3 weeks at #1 in 2006 (#1 of 24 for '06)
My 14th birthday #1! And the highest of all my birthday #1's. "Loose" is one of my favourite albums ever. I remember at the time a lot of people were complaining that Nelly was "selling out" and abandoning her folk roots. But I really didn't care one way or the other. It still felt genuine to me. It's not like she was jumping on a trend; if anything she started this Timbaland trend. And thinking about it now; Nelly was probably the pop girl I like the most during this time period. I enjoyed her stuff more than Gwen, Fergie, Avril, etc. "Maneater" is also my favourite thing that Timbaland has ever done. The beat is amazing. I love the loud thumping drumming sound throughout and I love the haunting chanting backing track. It is a bit of a dark song. Nelly is giving a warning about these types of girls she deems "maneaters". The song is really catchy. And I love the outro on the album version. Timbaland was known for making overly long outros. But this one just enhances the song even more. Unlike the outro in "If We Ever Meet Again", which defines pointlessness. I remember in mid-2006 when "Promiscuous" came out, and I remembering thinking "WTF is this?". It was a really weird song, but it stood so much against everything else at that time. It was the lead single in North America, and "Maneater" was the second single (and for some bizarre reason, "Maneater" struggled to even go top 10 in the US; but I think it was much bigger in Canada). However, in the UK (and I think Europe as well?) the two singles were released in opposite order, with "Maneater" being the lead single. I'd say the right choice was made since each lead single was a massive #1 in their respective country. "Promiscuous" was more urban, so it was more suited to the US. Like I said, it way different from everything else in music at that time, and I appreciate it for its oddness. But "Maneater", though, was an obsession of mine for a while, and it would've been my year end #1 of 2006 if I had a personal chart back then. And it has aged really well. So it's no surprise to see it this high.

"Maneater" So glad to see it very high <3 Top 5, even Top 3, would have been the best in my opinion. Anyway, I also remember when it came out and I was like... "Wait! This is weird, but I really love it.". I mean, I was following Nelly Furtado's career since "I'm Like a Bird" was released, so it was strange for me that she did this kind of stuff. Personally, I have always preferred "Maneater" over "Promiscuous" and I also agree that the album version of the former is amazing because of the outro. It's so good. Regarding the order of the singles, you're right. "Maneater" was released as the lead one in Europe, excluding Spain where "Te BusquΓ©" was the chosen one, and Latin America, while "Promiscuous" was the first one in North America and Oceania. Oh! The main reason why "Maneater" struggled to go into the Top 10 in the US was mainly Geffen, her label. They wanted to maximize "Promiscuous" there (even around late August/early September when it was 'almost done'), so they didn't want to send/release any song after that, despite US radios jump on it and it had good sales. Also, I think her label thought it wasn't going to work it out there As a consequence, when they saw that "Promiscuous" couldn't do anything else, they sent "Say It Right" as the second US single, despite many people, including me, consider "Maneater" as the second one. I wish her label would have had faith on it because it was a smash waiting to happen and it would have done wonders in the US, although I don't think it would have been bigger than "Promiscuous" there.

#8. Rihanna feat. Calvin Harris - We Found Love 6 weeks at #1 in 2011 (#1 of 30 for '11)
The more I think about it, I think this just might be my favourite song of (as in released in) the 2010's so far. It's one anthem of a song. The lyrics are concise, but that just makes them more effective. The words "We found love in a hopeless place" is repeated a lot, but it's like "Feel The Love", in that it just makes the words stick with you even more. A "hopeless place" can be defined as just about anything; it's very non-specific. That makes it easy to relate to. Often love is found in places one would never expect. This song makes references to drugs (the video especially); like "Yellow diamonds" (which I believe is ecstasy.) The song is comparing being in love with being on drugs. Both can be addiction. But it can also be an addiction to the wrong person. Which can be unhealthy like an addiction to drugs. That's why she keeps saying "But I've gotta let it go". At its surface, this seems like a "happy in love"-type song, but it's darker than that. The production is so energetic and gives off such an anthemic feeling. Most notably from the way it shoots up at the beginning of the breakdowns, which is pretty reminiscent of a drug trip, furthering the drug references.

Yay at "We Found Love" <3 It's not one of my favourite produced tracks from Calvin, but I can't deny the impact it had. Also, Rihanna's vocals are so good and I think it complements really well with the production, which it's so euphoric. Anyway, I wish Calvin would have released a version with the extended breakdown

#7. Girls Aloud - Sound Of The Underground 4 weeks at #1 in 2002 / 2003 (#2 of 29 for '02)
This is my second favourite Girls Aloud song after "Biology". An flawless start to an amazing career. The Sugababes' "Round Round" started a change in the UK music scene in 2002 and this song picks up where that leaves off. Girl groups at the time, like Atomic Kitten, were doing camp cutesy pop. What The Sugababes and Girls Aloud did was completely change that around. They were edgy, they had sexy undertones in their songs, they seemed "cool". They weren't necessarily "good girls", so to speak. "Round Round" and "Sound Of The Underground" were both produced by Xenomania, so that production duo deserves a lot of credit here. This remains the best TV talent show coronation song ever and makes all those bland cover songs look even worse. (Girls Aloud were formed on the second series of UK Popstars.) These TV talent shows hadn't produced an artist quite like this at that point in time. Let alone produced a SONG like this. Indeed, this couldn't be any different from "Pure and Simple". I'm not entirely sure what this song is about, but I think the song is literally about itself. The lyrics are describing the song itself, and it's making a statement that these 5 girls are bringing something fresh to the table (that's why it's the "sound of the underground". It's also rhymes nicely.) I also like the pre-chorus where each of them doesn't a different line in it. Random, I know. This is also the best Christmas #1 of my lifetime. I don't know about all time though.
