I'll admit I was very skeptical about this reaching #1, or even making the top 5, given the current radio climate. It's just been so refreshing seeing it breeze up the chart, and easily hitting #1 after just 23 weeks on Billboard. Incredibly impressive to watch a debut song rise to the top so rapidly, in an age where it seems like most songs take years climbing up the chart. Huge congrats to Maddie & Tae. Country radio finally got something right. :)

Does anyone else hear a striking musical resemblance between this and Miranda's "Baggage Claim"...? Umm. No. MR While I appreciate your insight, mind you I was not insulting either song. I like both songs and I prefer Maddie & Tae's (if I had to choose). I was only wondering if anyone else heard the musical similarities. I understand the inherent fact that music over time will inevitably limit the amount of pleasing chord progressions songwriters can use and I always find it intriguing to note which songs sound similar. It's fine that you disagree with me, but take a moment to look at this short video I put together. I'd be curious to hear if your opinion changes at all. www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnZMCDve7zU

Both songs just kind of bounce around between two chords and have the same tempo. The lyrics are nothing at all alike and the melodies are completely different. As far as I know, you can't copyright two chords and a tempo. There are literally thousands of songs that share similarities. Hell, if we were going to start comparing songs let's look at how similar bro-country songs are! Especially "Play It Again" and "Sure Be Cool If You Did" - I could go on and on. MR

It's always fascinating how you listen to a certain song that is one genre and you can listen to a song of a completely different genre and they have not only the same chord progression but the same melody as well! Clearly the songwriters of the latter song had heard and were thinking (at least subconsciously) of the former song during the writing process. In this case, it could be a complete coincidence for all I know. What really stuck out for me was the intros. But I digress. Congrats on this song getting #1. What an accomplishment. These girls have a good country sound but have a few pop influences that probably help their overall popularity. When I first heard the song, I thought it was kind of a "joke" song (whatever that means) and I surely didn't expect it to have such a huge impact on mainstream country radio.

Should have clarified. I doubt Maddie & Tae were trying to copy Miranda's song or even had it in mind at all. I write songs now and then and one of the most frustrating things in the world is getting a progression and a melody, spending some time on it, and then realizing that it's almost exactly the same as another song.

The intros to both songs are fairly similar, but I don't really draw any comparisons between "Girl in a Country Song" and "Baggage Claim" after the singing kicks in.

Now that Maddie & Tae have the #1 song in country (congratulations), I hope they have some staying power like the Judds and not flame out quickly like the Wreckers.

Very interesting that Maddie & Tae got a #1 so easily while critically acclaimed country female artists (Kacey Musgraves, Ashley Monroe, etc) struggle to get airplay. I think female artists like Kacey & Ashley need to re-examine their music and figure out why they're having such a hard time while others like Maddie & Tae are doing so well.
GIACS backs up my theory that country-pop songs with hip-hop beats is the future of country radio. Maybe this will encourage more female country artists to add more pop and hip-hop beats mixed in. That's a good formula to help females get more #1 hits.

Could be. Although I've also been baffled that supposedly girl voices are anathema to country radio, yet female-led groups do very well. Why, I don't know.
Maybe harmonizing helps - in this case it would not fit one of my other theories lol that female radio listeners are more likely to respond favorably to a female-led group that includes a guy, preferably a cute guy, than to a solo female artist.

I think female artists like Kacey & Ashley need to re-examine their music and figure out why they're having such a hard time while others like Maddie & Tae are doing so well. Ashley Monroe didn't even have a single promoted by her label to country radio. Kacey Musgraves made the top-10 with a now-platinum song that sounded like nothing on country radio at the time, and subsequently went gold with a song that didn't crack country radio's top-40. Meanwhile, a rhythmic rock offering by the format's only two female A-listers didn't make the top-five despite strong sales, and the rest of Maddie & Tae's music is mercifully devoid of faux hip-hop beats. So all things considered, I don't see the logic of imposing any particular formula on the format's female artists based on the success of this song, especially since this particular song was distinguished by such a pointed message. Congratulations to Maddie & Tae (and co-writer Aaron Scherz) on their #1! I was hoping to see them among the Grammy nominations, but in the absence of that, they are virtually guaranteed an ACM nod for Vocal Duo and will figure in the ACM New Artist voting. Here's hoping "Girl in a Country Song" factors into the ACM Song & Single of the Year categories, as well.

MB Final Chart: 2 1 MADDIE & TAE Girl In A Country Song (Dot Records) 7986 7477 509 24105 22551 1554 20
Damn. I was so wrong about this song.... :) Could not really stand it first but has since grown on me as it is all around all the time now. Congrats to the MB #1. Well deserved, I must say.

I'm glad this hit #1, if only because it means I can judge them based on their next single since I didn't like this one. I'm interested to hear what's next and to see how radio responds. (I viewed this song as a gimmick from the first time I heard it.)

I know that what's likely is that this song will start to drop on the charts, but I am strongly hoping it can stay level or even add some more audience. Then it would be a candidate to stay at #1 on Billboard (maybe MB too) for 3-4 weeks. That would cheer me up about country radio, although I have nothing against the songs by Tim and Brad coming along behind M&T. It's just that this is a one-of-a-kind song and, after Urban got 2 weeks for his extraordinary song, maybe there's room for another longer-than-one-week run.

Finishes #1 at MediaBase with 57 million audience impressions. I'll say it has 49 on the airplay chart.

I'm so glad this hit #1. If they release something else from the EP, I'm hoping for "Sierra".

I can't say I really like their voices that much, but I'm very happy this particular song did well. Modern country deserves to be mocked.

I thought it was on the gimmick-y side, too, which wasn't helped by reading that Rolling Stone (?) interview.
But it has really grown on me, and they were charming enough when I had a chance to see them live for a short set earlier this year. Congrats to them on their #1.
It will be interesting to see how they follow up in radio terms, the other songs I saw in their set were not nearly as striking as this one -- with one exception which is not the new single I see their team has chosen.

This is the part of the chart trajectory that always annoys me - and always exposes the country radio genre.
The part where it just immediately loses spins after hitting #1 with a big bullet the week before. You're telling me that everyone was NUTS about this song last week and suddenly hates it this week?
Wish the format would handle #1s with a bit more credibility. You don't really see this happen on the other formats - certainly not as often.

I've definitely noticed that they just want the song to reach #1 and then they move on to the next... I always found it strange.

I've definitely noticed that they just want the song to reach #1 and then they move on to the next... I always found it strange. You can thank the slow moving chart for that. Girl In A Country Song took 23 weeks to hit the top. With the next single released, Fly, it will take them to the middle of next year to peak with that one.

Wish the format would handle #1s with a bit more credibility. You don't really see this happen on the other formats - certainly not as often. In my short chart-watching time (and maybe some of the more experienced watchers can chime in), I don't think it's necessarily radio stations moaning and groaning about playing a song they don't want to. I doubt the promo team called up and said "hey, let's get this song to number 1!" and the radio folks said "ugh, we really don't want to play this one any more but we'll get you to number 1 then we're outta here!" I think more likely is that these songs up toward the top (like Girl in a Country Song, Somewhere in My Car, Shotgun Rider, Perfect Storm) are all in good standing with radio. Without any lobbying they would probably still be pretty high up there. I'm guessing what the lobbying does is it pushes it over the top and that's where you see the number 1s come from. Once the promo teams more or less stop promoting a song, the radio folks decide to return the song back down to normal rotation. In the cases of the huge drops, they return it to where it would have been at this point in it's airplay life. I think like onebuffalo said, these songs have somewhat long lives that are prolonged by promotion. If there was no fabricated "max spins now!!!!!!" promotions like we see, I would guess that Neon Light would have spent a couple weeks up there, Somewhere in My Car a couple weeks, Shotgun Rider a couple, Perfect Storm one, Til It's Gone one. Sunshine & Whiskey, Day Drinking and Girl in a Country Song probably would have peaked between 2-4, but feel free to disagree with me. You can always tell which songs were really pushed by how much they drop in the following weeks. When you see Neon Light losing only 800 or so spins and Sunshine & Whiskey losing 2200, you know which song radio really thought was more worth playing, even though they both hit #1. Of course all of this could be dead wrong, but it's my best guess.
