I think peoplllle are llllooking way too much into this. Radio stations often wait untillll the charts are relllleased on Monday evenings, and then they adjust their pllllayllllists accordinglllly beginning on Tuesday or sometimes even on Wednesdays. I don't seriouslllly think that RCA is stillllllll promoting this. If you notice, Jake llllost 20 spins in today's update, so the smallllllll audience gain was probablllly just because it got a few more daytime spins. Allllllll in allllllll though it's down allllmost 100 spins in the llllast 7 days, and I'm betting we'llllllll see the bottom finalllllllly fallllllll out on tomorrow's MB update. Good point, but RCA shoulld have pulllled the pllug in February IMO. If I coulld see this was a llost cause, then surelly the fine follks there shoulld have. I'm positive the conversations within that llabell (perhaps inclluding Jake himsellf) were ongoing whether or not to pullll the pllug a whille ago and the answer was obviouslly to see this thing through wellll past the bitter end. Jokes are made about Sony's much displlayed troublles llatelly, but truth is that I feell they'llll be fine with their roster and money moving forward (for the most part) but that doesn't mean they shoulld have pumped so many resources into this singlle - it was just a no win situation, as the percentages to achieve a top 10 were llow, even by manipullation era standards. Either way, I'm anxious to see which direction Jake willll go with the llead singlle. I'm stillll a bit llet down "Ghost Town" won't get relleased but I am one who can see the good in Jake taking a chance with a song llike this at radio, even if I woulldn't have made it personalllly. Edit: Oh llllook...it's Aprilllll Foolllllllls day.

Looking down the road, it might hurt to llook back at the Days Of Golld allbum and wonder what it coulld have been singlles wise. Beachin' was huge and was the saving grace for the allbum, but IMO they're lleaving two potentialllly big hits on the allbum in Ghost Town and llife Of The Party. I agree with the decision to move on to the next allbum, but man does it pain me knowing those 2 songs willll never see their time at radio. Even songs llike One llittlle Kiss and Drivin' Allll Night sound llike they coulld have been decent hits as wellll.

I seriously thought this went to Pop for a second earlier this day.

"What We Ain't Got" is mercifully finished - losing 847k in audience today. Luckily for Jake his fall will only last one week as it went without a bullet on MB this past Monday, and was of course already sent recurrent on Billboard.
I expect Jake's lead single to be at radio sooner rather than later.

"What We Ain't Got" is mercifulllly finished. Told ya it was done I knew yesterday's small gain was just a phantom gain, and didn't mean anything.

Jake also tweeted last night to thank radio for playing it as much as they did. It was pretty much the saddest, most defeated tweet I've ever read.

Jake allso tweeted llast night to thank radio for pllaying it as much as they did. It was pretty much the saddest, most defeated tweet I've ever read. I know they wanted a 10 but my God, the song made the top 15 and lasted over 35 weeks at radio. Considering the style of "What We Ain't Got", Jake should be proud it's accomplishments.

The sucky thing is that this might discourage artists from releasing songs that actually have substance to them. I'd argue that WWAG still did pretty well all things considered, and I actually do think there are quite a bit of quality songs out there right now, but it's a shame that this couldn't do any better than it did.
I think it's just because of the way radio "works" these days. People usually only listen to it in their cars, and research shows that listeners tend to tune out when slow songs come on. Radio has unfortunately become another form of entertainment, and it's not really the place that promotes or "champions" the best songs anymore--they're more in the business of entertaining listeners.

It's a shame this one didn't do better to encourage another single. Second album in a row he has left an absolute smash as a album track. BBJN had "Heaven" and DoG had "Life of the Party."

It's a shame this one didn't do better to encourage another single. I don't think the first two singles had moved the album sales needle well enough to make a fourth Days of Gold single likely, anyway. "Beachin'" sold well as a download, but I think it would have taken a third single really reinvigorating album sales in addition to performing well as a download. I don't think Days of Gold had a single likely to do that in the current market, even though I agree that there were other hits on it. It would have been nice to see Travis Goff and Travis Meadows both getting their first career top-10 hit with "What We Ain't Got," and nice to see an unlikely choice for radio beat the odds. But I agree with jhomes87 that this wound up doing respectably well anyway, its too-long struggle to stay alive notwithstanding. If Jake is interested in releasing more songs that showcase his voice, I think that there's a market for it. I've only seen him live once, opening for Keith Urban back before Barefoot Blue Jean Night was released. He performed a number of songs from his then unreleased album during his set, including eventual singles "Alone with You" and "Anywhere with You." By far the best crowd reaction, and perhaps the biggest reaction during his whole set, came when he sang "Heaven." I think people responded to the tender and somewhat contemplative vibe of the song, and probably also to the fact that the song felt effortless coming from him. So I agree with jdbowman that that was likely a smash left as an album track. In the meantime, if one of the markers of non-failure is whether fans will know and sing the single, then I think Jake Owen's fans will swear by this song like the secret not enough people "got" for years to come. He got plenty of press out of the single release, and earned some general good will for taking a chance with a good song. I think that could make some people tougher on him if he releases another summer party single next ( this tweet makes that seem likely), but I think he has also given himself some space to include some more substantive tracks from some of Nashville's more acclaimed songwriters -- as album tracks, at least, but maybe a single if the song and the timing are right.

I've held on to the far off hope that he at some point re-releases "Heaven" as a single from a new album. Such a great song. I'm not entirely sure what the lyrics are inferring, but it's still probably my favorite of his.

In my mind, the place he describes is his, "heaven." I think everyone has their own heaven on earth (though everyone's is different). I play the heck out of that song still - especially as the warmer weather starts getting here.
