I'm a little surprised they're not going with "Ghost Town", but I bet they're saving that for the 4th single. If they were ever going to release "What We Ain't Got", now was the time to do so following the massive hit "Beachin'", and heading into the fall when ballads tend to do better. I think this is an amazing song, and it might help get Jake some award nominations. I expect this song to sell well digitally too. This could be the song that transforms Jake into an A-list superstar. I just hope radio isn't afraid to play this one and it stalls out early on.

This is a very surprising choice, I'm a little worried about this tbh. To me, this is a great album track, I'm not sure how it will do on the radio as a single. It's not just a ballad, it's a pretty slooow ballad. Fingers crossed, though.

This is most certainly Jake's choice for the third single. He said when the album came out that he was pushing hard at RCA for this to be released and he finally got his wish. "Ghost Town" will most certainly follow since the music video was already made and if they can get another smash out of this (giant "if" just because of the kind of song this is), then "Ghost Town" being a fourth single off an album is about as good as a fourth single can get these days. "Beachin'" going #1 will help with momentum, but will that momentum be there by the end of "What We Ain't Got's" chart run. I do love this style of song being released by Jake and is miles better than "Beachin'".
I said when "Beachin'" was released that "Ghost Town" should have been second but the timing ended up working out with RCA holding off the add date til well after "Days Of Gold" peaked which could have backfired on them but it obviously didn't with "Beachin'" being the #1 single this week.

I love this song - it's highly relate-able, well-constructed, and well-produced. I know Jake was pushing hard for it, so I'm happy for him that he's getting to release it, but I'm still nervous about how this will do at radio. I know that radio seems to be turning a bit, but this song is just so slow and even if radio changes a bit and loosens up some, it's still not the same era as when "The House That Built Me" was released (which I mention only because it comes to mind every time I hear this song as they're both so stripped down and such honest lyrics). That said, now is a better time to release it as he's coming off a huge #1. They've got Ghost Town waiting in the wings to rebuild momentum for the next album cycle if need be - I can't imagine Ghost Town not seeing a release, but I said the same thing about Heaven so...

Couldn't agree more. If they were going to let Jake release this, it had to be now after the momentum surge of "Beachin'". I also have no clue how this will do because of how slow and under produced this is. It's a shame that we have this discussion every time songs like these get released now but that's how radio goes in 2014. 8 or 9 years ago, we wouldn't have worried as much about "What We Ain't Got's" chart chances. In any event, they still got there extra life in the bag with "Ghost Town" which is radio friendly and would have a good chance at rebuilding Jake's momentum if "What We Ain't Got" under performs.

Great song .... Bad single choice ... Jake seems bound and determined to kill whatever momentum he keeps gaining at radio.

Boo! totally agree with countrymusic20. "ghost town" was the obvious choice with the video already shot as the third part of the series.

I really hope this does well. It's one of the better ballads released in any of the recent albums.
I'd really like to see "Life of the Party" or "Driving All Night" released as well as Ghost Town. Life of the Party is my favorite song on the album and I think would absolutely be a smash, but it seems like there's a strong chance my favorite song on the album goes unreleased for the second straight cycle (still mourning you loss, "Heaven").
Anyway, releasing this misses the CMA awards window right? So this would be looking for an ACM nomination?

Finally! He's getting to release a ballad. This is a SMART choice.

Does anyone know if the writers of this song (Travis Jerome Goff and Travis Meadows) have written other songs that have been on the charts before?

I think it comes off a bit awkward with the "Days of Gold- Beachin'- Ghost Town" video trilogy to put this single in between, but I agree with above posters that if this song was going to be released as a single (it's a risk to flop with it being a ballad), saving "Ghost Town" as a fourth single is smart. "Ghost Town" has a much surer chance of being a high chart single and will build Jake some momentum going into his next album, whereas if this song flopped he'd have much less buzz going into his next album. I have to say though, "Beachin'" being a number one hit, this song and "Ghost Town" which are much better songs imo, should easily be number ones. Alas, my ballad-loving heart is not made for radio today.

All the hits in the world won't make this wooden bore into a star. If 'Barefoot Blue Jean' couldn't nothing can.

Great song .... Bad single choice ... Jake seems bound and determined to kill whatever momentum he keeps gaining at radio. I disagree. I think Jake is trying to go against the grain and is trying to release some different songs. All 3 singles have sounded very different from each other. Instead of playing it safe with his choices, I feel like he's swinging for the fences, and aiming to become an even bigger star. I wish more artists had the guts to push their label to release songs like this one. I know slower songs have struggled in recent years, but after a slow start, "I Don't Dance" has really picked up, and looks headed for #1, so perhaps radio will be ready for a song like this. "Drink A Beer" and "I Drive Your Truck" were also pretty slow, but still made it to #1. I think this song will sell well digitally, because when it comes on the radio it will sound so different from everything else on. I hope this song does well, to encourage more country songs with better subject matter like this one.

Good song, but I wish he would've released "1972". Love that one. I hope WWAG can go top 10, but with radio these days, I'd expect a peak around #23 or so.

I'll bet the bank this will be the worst selling single since before BFBJN.

so i absolutely LOVE this song. i really hope this song can rise to the top cause if it does it could be huge for his career. I love where country radio could be headed with songs like this and (I dont dance). with those i think country radio could get better. comparing this year from last year is good cause i hated almost every single from 2013 and this year there is some great music. i hope that continues! :)

I sincerely hope this does well at radio. This is exactly the type of song I don't mind hearing on the radio more often. Just a man, a piano, and a steel guitar.

I could see this song having either a successful chart run or a not successful chart run. I'd say it will be a top 20 hit at least. I wish he would've went with Ghost Town or Tipsy.

I have a feeling one of your predictions will come true! But I think I know what you mean! It's a great song and could possibly be like "Stay" for Sugarland. Or it could flame out before the top 30.

Could this song pull a "Stay" by Sugarland and be a #1 MB and #2 Billboard single? Sure it can. But I really feel country radio has changed that much since late 2007 where that's even less of a possibility than it is now. Just that year alone there were quite a few slow or ballad type songs that went top 10 ("I'll Wait For You", "A Woman's Love", "Everybody", "Moments", "Stay"). At the same time I also think that it won't flame out before the top 30, mainly because of the momentum Jake has garnered with "Beachin'" and I'm sure RCA is prepared to do everything in their power to make this single a success. If I had to predict I say this makes it somewhere in the middle--Perhaps a top 15 peak with a 25 week run or so. To be honest I don't have a great feel for how this will do but maybe I'm trying to convince myself this will be a good gamble on Jake and RCA's part. If not, then they have to rip out their golden pendant of life ("Legends Of The Hidden Temple" reference) and release "Ghost Town" so they can keep going through Olmec's temple (aka. Country radio's good graces).

Good song lyrically but man this is going to be a snoozer on radio :(
Ghost Town, Tipsy, I Like You A Lot, 1972, Tall Glass of Something all would have been better imo.

I wonder when this song will go for adds. Jake and his team have been patient before, so I think they might wait to promote this to radio later in August, trying to avoid the new releases from FGL, Jason Aldean, and Garth as much as they can. Luke and Kenny's songs shouldn't be a problem as they will peak in no more than 15 weeks, and are already pretty far up the charts. Plus "Beachin'" will probably be getting decent recurrent play up until Labor Day, due to the subject matter of the song.

I think waiting until summer is over is the only way to give this song a fair shake and the best chance on the charts.
