Considering album sales were notably higher in the 1990s and 2000s, and where Al's albums have peaked in the SoundScan era, I'd think some of his best openings weren't that far off of this current album's projection- except Alpocalypse, which did 44K in its first week.

What are some of Al's past openings, sales-wise? Alpocalypse sold 44,000 in its first week... not sure about Straight Outta Lynwood or Poodle Hat though. I am so here for all the Weird Al love on Pulse! My dad's been a fan since the 80s and he has all the original records, I was born in 1993 so when I was very young I originally only knew famous 80s songs like "Bad" and "Like a Virgin" by Weird Al's lyrics!

This could be the week frozen leaves the top 5 (and will probably return right after anyway ) Especially because Idina sang TWO songs at the All-Star game and wasn't terrible either. Sidebar, Idina was brought up rather uncomfortably when Taye Diggs was on Watch What Happens Live recently.

That's because Andy Cohen remains a pot boiling mess.

I knew Weird Al would trend upward... I expected more from Bleachers, though. I don't think word of mouth will be outstanding for the album, either.

It would be great to see Al snag a number one album. I like it when veteran artists get those late-career bumps, it's a tribute to their longevity. There are so few early 80s acts who could still possibly have a number one album in 2014. Good for him!

With 'My Bologna' coming in 1979 (although not on an album til his early 80s debut) he was getting exposure even in the 70s

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6157866/weird-al-vs-jason-mraz-for-no-1-on-the-billboard-200-chart'Weird Al' vs Jason Mraz For No. 1 on the Billboard 200 ChartBy Keith Caulfield, Los Angeles | July 16, 2014 8:42 PM EDT Two artists are vying for their first No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 chart, as both Jason Mraz and "Weird Al" Yankovic are aiming for the top slot next week. Industry forecasters project Mraz's "Yes!" and Yankovic's "Mandatory Fun" to each sell around 70,000 to 75,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, July 20. Both albums were released on July 15. The Billboard 200's new top 10 will be revealed on Wednesday, July 23. Mraz has previously topped out at No. 2 with his previous album, 2012's "Love Is a Four Letter Word." In total, he's collected three top 10 sets. As for Yankovic, he's claimed two top 10 efforts, though his chart history stretches back much farther than Mraz's. Yankovic arrived on the Billboard 200 back in May of 1983 with his self-titled album, containing his first Billboard Hot 100 hit, "Ricky" (a spoof of Toni Basil's No. 1 "Mickey"). Mraz, meanwhile, made his Billboard 200 debut 20 years later with "Waiting For My Rocket to Come." Yankovic might even snag his best sales week since SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991. Currently, his largest frame in that span of time was logged when 2006's "Straight Outta Lynwood" bowed at No. 10 with just under 73,000 sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Other albums on course for notable debuts next week include Rise Against's "The Black Market" (maybe 55,000) and the new "Kidz Bop 26" album (50,000).

Sia may have been #1 but it was #1 at 50K, position-wise this may look big but numbers wise it looks normal

Yah0 if Sia's album does 14K, that would be around a 73% drop, in line with most albums' second weeks these days.

2 #1 albums in a row by long-term artists (well, Sia is 10+ years in the biz at least) who had never been #1 before and used very nontraditional promo.
Proving that if you're not already a huge star, you've got to do something unique to really break out. Kudos to both of them.

Does Al have an official first single (Would it be "Word Crimes") or did he just release a bunch of videos and certain songs rose to the top virally?

I don't think Al would rely on the traditional 'singles' strategy anyway since he's unlikely to get radio airplay in the same way most artists would. I'm sure his songs are getting played on the radio but probably to coincide or as a response to the social media sharing that's happening with each song/video that gets released rather than the usual radio ad/play on regular rotation for 3 months/drop/recurrent play.

I was just in Best Buy and went over to new releases, the only empty area was Weird Al's. All other new releases had plenty of CDs stocked.

Yankovic reportedly produced eight videos for the album, and, has been revealing one a day. Not to mention each video has been on a different site or Youtube channel. 'Handy' was on Yahoo, 'Sports Song' was on Funny or Die, 'Foil' was on College Humor, 'Tacky' was on Nerdist, and 'Word Crimes' was on his own Vevo channel. Since each site has its own audience, its really helping to get the word out.

wow!!! That is incredible for Weird Al. Absolutely amazing. He must feel incredible to finally get a #1 album with almost no traditional promotion either. Nothing at radio, no performances anywhere, etc.
