And that is why GhostTunes sucks. He didn't get them from GhostTunes. He bought them straight through Garthbrooks.com like I did which doesn't have a clear way to re-download. GhostTunes stores them in the cloud and can be streamed from any device as well as downloaded multiple times. Ghosttunes worked great - very easy to download the tunes to my pc, then add them to my iTunes playlist. I find searching on the site to be a bit awkward and frustrating. Hopefully, they'll smooth things out over time.

Ok so I got the 2 new songs and have really enjoyed both of them. Now today iTunes has somehow lost my file and can't locate it. I tried to download it again from my original email from Garth Brooks store and it won't let me. I was really loving this song too! Anyone have a solution to how I can fix this? I know if I sync my ipod I will lose the song and I just downloaded the new Lee Brice and Dustin Lynch albums too! Man, he was serious when he named it ghost tunes. Get it, 'cause they've disappeared like a ghost. HAHAHAHAHA

I was very much looking forward to the new release from Garth . . . I wish him the best with "People Loving People" . Perhaps it will right itself and move up next week, but I wouldn't be greatly surprised if this single has already peaked. The airplay it received last week was due to Garth's name, reputation and excitement (especially by Country Radio) over new material. . . not necessarily because it was a great song. The next couple of weeks will tell us if its a great song or not.
Country Music in general and Country Radio in particular have changed by leaps and bounds over the last 20 years. I don't believe its a forgone conclusion that Garth will pick up his career right where he left off (as far as chart success goes). That's not to say he won't release successful singles. . . just that we probably shouldn't expect everything he releases to be as good or peak as high as his previously released "classic" material.

This single is likely to do very, very well with radio. Follow-up singles? Those may not do as well. But then again, we don't know exactly what he has up his sleeve w/r/t what is coming after this single.

The next couple of weeks will tell us if its a great song or not. I would be very surprised if this song has peaked already. Anyway, I see that this is your first post here, so first of all, welcome. Secondly, the reason this had such a negative update today is because tons and tons of stations (mostly Clear Channel ones) played PLP once an hour upon its launch last week Wednesday. That amounted to 13.7 million audience impressions in one day. The Mediabase chart is a rolling chart, which means that today's update reflects airplay from Thursday the 4th through Wednesday the 10th. Tomorrow's update will reflect airplay from the 5th through the 11th. So as you can see, that huge first-day number is no longer included in the rolling totals, and thus, that results in a big negative update for PLP today. This is the standard case when songs get top of the hour spins via Clear Channel's Artist Integration program. And the bigger the first-day number, the bigger the 8th day loss. "People Loving People" will likely have a positive update tomorrow, because it's only 'competing' against last Thursday's gain of 303 spins and 2.66 million in audience. That's still a huge update in itself, so I can't imagine Garth seeing that big of an update tomorrow, but I do think he'll be back in the positive territory. I can see this struggling for a bit, perhaps for the next 2 weeks or so, but ultimately I think it will win out in the long run. Garth and RCA chose this song as the lead single and they've done a full launch for it, so I don't think they'll just yank it after a couple of weeks unless radio is absolutely not interested in spinning it more. I suppose it could be a case like the Kenny/Tim "Feel Like A Rock Star" fiasco from 2 years ago, but I think PLP will at least do well enough to make the top 10. One thing's for sure, though--it's still very early for this song, and we can't base its future off of today's update.

Agreed, it will take several weeks to see exactly where this song is headed, although I do get the "Feel Like A Rock Star" vibe from it. I have worked in Country Radio for a long time and my opinions I base on my ears and my gut. . . (They have been wrong of course, but usually are fairly accurate) We have not added this song yet . . . will just have to watch the charts for a couple of weeks. I can honestly say, I have had only 1 request for PLP since it was released.

That's cool spinninthehits, but many fans -- especially current fans who were toddlers or didn't listen to Garth outside of their parent's CD players -- might not even be aware of the song, especially if y'all haven't added it. I know many radio programmers who say things like "We like it a lot but we can't (or won't) add a new artist until it gets to the Top 30/Top 20." How is an act supposed to get traction if many stations do this with newer artists (or take a wait and see approach on songs like this one?). To me that's not leading, that's following and to me it seems better to lead than follow.

I wasn't a fan of the song when it first hit the radio but I was lucky enough to catch Garth in concert last weekend. He performed this song and my opinion of it changed. I like it now. Has a good message and the chorus kind of sticks with you. Obviously I'm in the minority here with my opinion but I can see the potential for it making gains up the chart at some point.

"People Loving People" has lost audience three days in a row and gained fewer than 50 spins on Mediabase over the past two days. I don't even remember "The Outsiders" (which debuted at its peak position) doing this poorly immediately after losing the Clear Channel spins. My opinion was that this Garth Brooks record was never going to return Garth to the top 10, but I wasn't quite expecting such immediate struggling. I guess that's a result of the huge first week...radio has already given the record about as much airplay as they want to. Garth simply can't get significant radio airplay if he refuses to put his music on iTunes or even give fans any way of purchasing his individual singles. Radio needs some way to gauge how well a single is selling with fans, even if this isn't the only factor used to make decisions about programming.
Perhaps Sony should have been more cautious when they signed a deal with Garth Brooks and added some stipulation to the contract that Garth has to have some way to sell individual singles to fans. This "Ghost Tunes" business isn't the way to keep an older artist relevant to a modern generation of listeners and radio programmers. Will it cement album-selling records that Garth already holds? Sure, but that's not all that meaningful in an era of declining album sales in my view.
As for "People Loving People" on the charts, I will place some bets on the single not returning to the top 20, although RCA Nashville will likely push pretty hard for a few weeks rather than just pull Garth's comeback single immediately.

To me that's not leading, that's following and to me it seems better to lead than follow. Thanks for the comment rsmatto . . . From a Radio Programming standpoint, I can't add a song simply because I like it . . . on the flip side, I can't not add a single simply because I don't like it. I have to temper my like / dislike of a particular song with what the charts say. Its not really my job to help an artist get traction on the chart (I'm not a reporting station anyway). We are not a "New Country" Station, its not my goal to break New Music or New Artists . . . Simply to play the hits. . . whoever they are from and whatever they may be. I'm in an un-ranked market between 2 medium markets and compete for listeners with Five other Country outlets. I would rather add a song a week or two late as opposed to having to drop a single after 3 or 4 weeks because it bombed off the chart. The charts also move much slower these days as opposed to when I started in radio in the 90's (there are of course exceptions now as there were then). Garth's "Friends in Low Places" was released in 1990, it debuted, peaked #1 and was gone from the chart in around 19 weeks. This past week, 13 of the top 30 songs first charted over 20 weeks ago. Adding a song a couple of weeks later than my competition is not going to hurt me in the long run if the song remains on the chart for 25 - 30 weeks. Again, my station is not a "New Country" station. . . if it were, my strategy would be much much different. I think you touched on one thing that Garth has to overcome in your post ". . . current fans who were toddlers or didn't listen to Garth outside of their parent's CD players -- might not even be aware of the song" Current fans may not be as familiar with Garth or as accepting of his music because many of Today's Country music fans weren't around during Garth's peak. He will certainly sell out shows wherever he goes but I believe his ultimate chart success from here on out will rely on how accepting a younger audience is of his new music. I can't predict . . . but it will be very interesting to watch it all unfold.

Like the song, very 90s sounding. However, not sure it can overcome the bro-country heavy programming today.
May very well end up like the "Shania's new song, TBA" thread on this board that ran for years. When she finally did come out with a new one, it pretty much bombed.

This is totally different than Shania's "comeback" song. Shania released a song to promote her TV show. There was no tour, no album and no promo. Garth is doing ALL of that.

Everyone needs to relax on trying to label the song as under performing. The song has been out for less than 2 weeks, is increasing nicely (another +168 and 1.0AI today) and shows zero signs of slowing down. I'm not saying the song is going to #1 or even top 5, but labeling it a disappointing chart run and song is a bit premature. Personally I don't think it's one of Garth's best releases to date, but honestly I'd rather hear this than 98% of other songs I see on the chart.

In fact, I think most here are saying it will be a decent hit. Read jhomes87 comment from only 4 days ago. She doesn't think it's underperforming and she has a pretty good tract record.

All that's happening right now is the typical post- clear channel deal hangover. Happens every time.

"Post-Clear Channel deal hangovers" never last more than one day, which is only a negative update because the hourly airplay from the first day is being taken out of the equation on the eighth day. Usually, if a song gets a Clear Channel deal, even after the first week updates are pretty strong for a while. I don't recall ever seeing a Clear Channel-world premiered song have two dismal updates immediately after losing the Clear Channel airplay like "People Loving People" did (except maybe "Home Sweet Home," which wasn't even on the chart at that point so we couldn't monitor its daily progress). I did speculate that this record wouldn't be a hit, but I don't see that as premature considering the numbers we were given. That being said, "People" has had strong updates the past two days so I'm not sure what to make of this. The two bad days could have been due to the extraordinarily high first-week bullet "People" achieved and so it had to cool off a bit more after the first week than previous songs that received hourly first-day airplay have, but I'm still betting on the single not making the top 10, mostly due to this "Ghost Tunes" which (to my understanding) won't produce a figure for individual single sales of this song.

The song's 'individual sales' aren't allowed because the digital bundle price doesn't include singles. Though if we see 30,000+ catalog #s for the albums, you can infer that there are already 30,000 fans who bought the single since the bundle includes it as part of the album.

Oh, yes, I understand that, rsmatto. But my point was that we won't know who is actually interested in this individual song because if you are buying Garth's entire catalog and "People Loving People" is just one song included in the bundle, that doesn't really do anything to indicate how much interest is in this individual single. That would be even harder to distinguish than using sales of one individual album that contains a single. I really don't think this business model is going to work if Garth wants to remain relevant on mainstream country radio. (Of course, if his goal is to sell as many albums as he can and not worry so much about radio success, then this is a fine plan, but I wouldn't think Sony Music Nashville would be very happy with that.)

This one indeed suffered a steeper than usual 2nd week loss, as it fell 19-23 on Billboard with a huge loss of 7.85 million in audience. Compared to recent CC debuts, week 2 was ugly for Garth.
1) Blake's "Neon Light" debuted at #19 on the 09/06 chart (after 7 days of airplay) with 20.3 million in audience. In his 2nd week, Blake held at #19 with a loss of 700k, for a new total of 19.6 mil.
2) Jason's "Burnin' It Down" debuted at #19 on the 08/09 chart (after 6 days of airplay) with 18.8 million in audience. In his 2nd week, Jason held at #19 with a small loss of only 227k, for a new total of 18.6 mil.
3) FGL's "Dirt" debuted at #16 on on the 07/26 chart (after 6 days of airplay) with about 19 million in audience. In its 2nd week, FGL held at #16 but managed a gain of 1.4 mil, up to a new total of 20.3 mil.
4) Kenny's "American Kids" debuted at #27 on the 07/05 chart (after only 3 days of airplay) with 12.9 million in audience. In his 2nd week, Kenny climbed 7 spots to #20 with a gain of 5 mil, for a new total of 17.9 mil. (releasing on a Friday really benefited Kenny)
And then you have "People Loving People" debuting at #19 (after only 5 days of airplay) with 20.5 million, but then slipping 19-23 in week 2 with a loss of 7.8 mil, and a new audience total of 12.7 mil.
**
However, I don't think the results are all that surprising. Garth hasn't been around radio for a long time. Obviously we could count on him to make a huge initial buzz, but now that excitement has waned. So I am not surprised that this won't climb as fast as Blake or FGL, and I also don't think that Garth's 2nd week loss of airplay is necessarily indicative of how PLP will fare in the long run. From here on out it's really up to Garth and RCA to win over radio programmers. PLP has started to trend back in the right direction with strong updates for the last 2 days at Mediabase.

Garth's second week was a pretty brutal one, but I agree that it's not surprising, and not really indicative of how the song will do in the long run. He could still turn it into a big hit, but with him being gone for so long, he's going to have to prove to some programmers (some of whom likely weren't around when he was having hits before) that 2014 audiences want to hear him as much as Luke/Jason/FGL/etc.

Garth Brooks must love what he sees in Canada. A fifteen point jump to #15 in its second week for People Loving People.

There's a lot of hope for Garth Brooks' "People Loving People", even though some are not digging it, I bet there's some who actually want to see this single succeed at Country radio.

I've been both waiting and holding off to comment on "People Loving People," but I heard it tonight on the radio during the 5 o'clock hour coming home so thought it was time. First things first, I am a GB fan. I have been since I was a young boy growing up with country music in the 90's. I have all of his albums and think he is an amazingly talented songwriter/performer who forever changed the demographics of country music and expanded the genre beyond the U.S. borders. That said...
This song is not at all what I was expecting from Garth's longtime expected return. The first 30 seconds of this song are just...off. Garth's voice just isn't recognizable enough for me, and for those that didn't grow up with him will likely change the station in those first 30 seconds. Even then, the song does start to get catchy and stuck in your head. I do admit I've found myself singing "People Loving People" to myself during the day. It was because of that I wanted to buy the song, however...
I have to buy Garth's entire catalog to get this? Not. Happening. I already purchased all of his albums, why am I going to again? So he can up his album sales? Not. Happening. For now, I continue to listen to the song via All Access. And for those of us radio listeners who know about All Access are in the minority. I also don't like corporate radio pushing songs down my throat or into my ears, so that makes me only dislike this song a little bit more than I normally would otherwise.
So, where does that leave me? I still don't know...I do enjoy some aspects of this song, but I'm not 100% behind Garth's return like I was expecting I would be and that almost disappoints me. Will this chart into the top 10? I'd have to guess yes as the powers that be will likely make it happen. Would it without there help? Probably not.
