Very odd that this gained 90 spins in 48 hours when all along it was chugging at a steady pace around +20 daily. The situation reminds me a lot of how Lorde's "Team" exploded with sudden and unorthodox spin gains and shot to #1 only to fall like a brick less than two weeks later. I still think that was payola. I'm not saying that's definitely the case here, but the spin gain pattern is suspicious so I'd not be shocked if the label realized what an easy shot for #1 they could make if they throw some buck behind it. I guess time will tell.

Jeez, out of the three songs poised for the next #1, it had to be this. Hoping "R U Mine?" overtakes it, because I don't get the appeal for this.

great promotion teams utilize their relationships when there is a window to get #1. When you have 2 solid candidates moving up, yet one gets a much bigger spin increase, chalk it up to simply a better promotion team at work. looks like the CAGE team knows how to carpe diem and the Arctic Monkeys team doesn't.

if you met the guys working the AM record (ADA), you might think otherwise. its a big deal for that label/distributor, like SONY RED and Caroline, to go the distance with the records they work. Its a magnet for courting other credible indie labels under their umbrella. They want number 1. The weekly profile of arctic monkeys airplay shows many huge stations rotation increases. They are going for #1. Just up against a tough competitor.

A big factor might be this:
R R CAGE THE ELEPHANT Come A Little Closer 670 712 -42 3.763
R R ARCTIC MONKEYS Do I Wanna Know? 889 859 30 4.98 R R ARCTIC MONKEYS Why'd You Only Call Me When... 193 222 -29 0.498
"High" started seeing a significant decline in recurrent airplay ever since "R U Mine" hit the top 10, so it's -29 is understandable, but compare "Come A Little Closer" to "Do I Wanna Know?". I wonder if RCA has asked for stations to pull from Come A Little Closer's recurrent spins to give CD a boost. CALC is one of the biggest recurrents around and has been since it went recurrent, so for it to drop -42 spins in a non-holiday week is really strange unless there's an odd reason such as the one I just suggested.

Nice jump. I have to say, I like the song a little more each time I hear it and 91x is playing it heavy.

Don't tell me this got to #1 by payola, like "Safe and Sound" and "This Is War".
Anyway, "Melophobia" has been a great era for Cage the Elephant, with three top 10s ("Take It or Leave It went top 10 on Mediabase, so I count that), two of which went #1. Congrats to these guys.

Unless this ends up getting huge spin decreases immediately after hitting #1 then I'm doubtful of any major payola being in effect here (which I doubt is the case for "Safe and Sound" as well).
Anyways, I'm still happy for the band and this song's success. They could even get the fourth single ball rolling ("Spiderhead", maybe?) without performing as badly as "Always Something" did.

SPIDERHEAD FOR FOURTH SINGLE PLEASE! (That's the only non-single I've heard from Melophobia, but it's so good that I want it to be a single)

I don't think payola exists on the scale it once did. Labels and promoters don't have the cash to throw around that they once did. I think this song is genuinely the most radio-friendly release yet. It's a straight up pop song.
Cage the Elephant seems to be in this weird Goldilocks zone. They've done well enough to merit consistent airplay, but they're not big enough to have backlash yet.

It's a straight up pop song. It's an acoustic ballad that's uncharacteristic of the band's general work. By that logic, "Swing Life Away" and "Snuff" are pop songs.

Thanks for putting words in my mouth. It's catchy, relatable, and perfect for winter. Want to build any more straw men?

^ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_manI don't think this is payola, and as several have said I'm guessing both R U Mine and this will trade the #1 slot for a bit before one comes out on top. Imagine Dragons might miss it altogether, though they're doing much better than some other recent second album lead singles (like Coming Of Age)

yeah the whole purpose of that phrase is fucking stupid and nah, this doesn't look like Payola. AM still has a very good shot of claiming #1.

Now this pisses me off. You guys rag on me when I mention Payola in the mainstream Pop charts; which is more evident, just by looking at the chart, and yet here we are talking bout payola on the Alternative chart and this is actually a deserving song to be number 1. I don't even see how anyone can suspect payola?

Come A Little Closer's recurrent play is way down all of a sudden, and RCA are known for this kind of pimping.

It's been predicted for a couple of weeks that Arctic Monkeys and this one were fighting it out for number 1. Therefore the fact that this is number 1 is a surprise to no one. Not everything is a conspiracy.

Not everything is a conspiracy. Lol, payola =/= conspiracy. "R U Mine" was the clear #1 before this had the shadiest updates we've seen since "Team" and "Come A Little Closer plummeted after months of 700+ spin weeks.

Could be that the team behind cage is very good at working radio. I see a lot of moves to heavy rotation over the past 7 days. Same as arctic monkeys and imagine dragons - only cage the elephant has a few more. Appears to be a level playing field. Likely answer is that the people behind cage the elephant are very good at their jobs promoting the record. Song could be researching too. Many cage the elephant tracks have before. While only one arctic monkeys single ever has at US radio

Didn't this get an excessive spin update just yesterday? Today we find it bulletless- roughly one week since those shady spincreases began.

If they go 4th single, should it be Spiderhead, Halo, or Telescope? Those seem the most likely as they are radio friendly.

I desperately want Spiderhead, since it's a fantastic song. It's also much more upbeat than Cigarette Daydreams so I think that would give it a better chance. Telescope would be good if it wasn't following another slow-paced song. Either way I anything will do much even after 2/3 #1's. Fourth singles don't do all that well in recent memory regardless of how well the first three perform (Family Tree, Dirty Paws, On Top of the World, etc.)

I read that they started work on their fourth album already, but if they go with a 4th single then hopefully it's "Spiderhead."
