But its sad that she keeps writing the album off cause its such a MASTERPIECE. :( True Romance is one of the best albums of last year. It deserved a lot more!

I really like the vibe of this album. Super easy question though, what were they thinking not releasing "Doing It" as the first single after "Boom Clap."

What kind of Paula Abdul 1991 throwback jewel is "Doing it"?!
Also, with a dash of Lucky Star thrown in.

Only listened to the album once (saving repeat listenings for when I buy the album), but I was a bit let down? From first impression it seems like I take more to the sound of True Romance more, but a lot of the songs here seemed like they needed more than one listen to realize themselves.

I've been JAMMING to this. I didn't care for "London Queen" or "Gold Coins" on their own, but in context of the album, they really work. This is one of the best pop releases of the year IMO.
This is more consistent to me than TR. And I'm glad she switched up her sound. I still wish "Superlove" was on it though, that will always piss me off.

It doesn't really seem like there's a lot of enthusiasm around her record being released. I think they waited a little too long to release it hoping/expecting Break The Rules to take off. They should've released it on the heels of Boom Clap's radio success during the fall, I don't have high expectations for this next week. It's a little disappointing because she's really truly talented and one of my favorite popstars of today's time, just some bad timing.

She performed Boom Clap again on SNL? Gosh, just move on and perform some new music. How will she create anticipation for a new album performing a 6-month old song?

"Sucker" is now on Itunes.
As for the album,a lot of nice pop tracks on the album. It's a fun album. Good for a road trip. If the album wasn't delayed until this week,It could of sold more.

Based on iTunes (and you'd expect this to represent a huge chunk of someone like Charli XCX's sales), I think we're looking at a very light debut for this one.

The delay hurt it more than helped this I believe. This was originally supposed to come out in October. That was the same time "Boom Clap" was still big on radio. It is just overshadowed by Nicki's release this week.

She currently has an 82 on Metacritic. Her last album had a 76. ...which proves that critics can easily get it wrong. Why a transcendent album like True Romance, which was bratty but also had inspired production and had a soul, would be ranked below this Avril-esque, bratty pop/punk trifle of an album clearly made to capitalize on her I Love It/Fancy success and cater to the lowest common denominator, truly baffles me and defies logic. I was really excited after True Romance for more Charli music but outside of Boom Clap, I'll pass. I'm sure there are one or two songs on the album worth the download though.

I was really excited after True Romance for more Charli music but outside of Boom Clap, I'll pass. I'm sure there are one or two songs on the album worth the download though. While I do think you're underrating the album (it's still a damn good pop album - and I don't know why the Avril comparison, however accurate or inaccurate, would be negative anyway - her "bratty" albums were excellent pop records), I do agree that critics are overrating this one. I think they're all very excited about the chance to "make Charli XCX happen" given that she was a cool, under-the-radar, Internet-friendly musician just a year ago and is now on the verge of superstardom, and it's clouding their judgment. As much as they tend to suck in some cases, at least Pitchfork *TRIED* to think through this critically, but even they stopped short of really pulling the trigger (if you're going to correctly peg Charli XCX's co-write with Rivers Cuomo as being his own Beverly Hills with female vocals, how do you not call that lazy?). Albums like this one--and musicians like Charli XCX--are important for furthering pop, but I also think it's important for artists like Charli XCX to recognize where she came up short. If she's led to believe this is a perfect album (and that there are ZERO questions about her shallow lyrics, the fact that she pulls off new wave/alt-pop a lot better than she does punk and that she can work on her likability), she'll never realize her potential - creatively or commercially.

Thanks for the well-thought out response. I just had really high hopes after True Romance was one of my favorite albums of the year. I thought her style was really cool and, while I get that her label (and, I'm guessing, Charli herself) wanted to go for a more mainstream direction, I just don't think (based on the clips), it sounds very well-executed.

Currently No. 9 on the iTunes main chart (better than I expected actually), but I feel a freefall coming. The label just waited way too long to put this record out.

Listening on Spotify now. She definitely dumbed down her music/lyrics for a pop audience but the songs are really catchy. I guess better Charli than other pop stars. I agree with everyone else who has been complaining about the timing of this album release. Talk about a failed opportunity. The songs are all really catchy and irresponsible, which is perfect for today's generation.

The album is pop perfection! The timing is a little off yeah, but still hoping it's only the beginning of a long career for her.

This album is pop perfection. I'm hard-pressed to think of a better pop album released this year. Far more consistent than True Romance IMO and I don't feel like it's dumbed down at all. I think it's fun, energetic, bratty, tongue-in-cheek and I love the switch in style.
As for the change in sound, she stated eons ago that during the writing process, everything came out angry and punk. I think that's just the place she was in creatively. I doubt very much that her record label was pushing her in that direction, who the hell is making pop-punk right now?
As for commercial success, I said it in the "BTR" thread, she's very much an indie/underground artist. Her mindset, her aesthetic, her music for the most part. Very similar to Robyn, who makes very commercial music with an indie spin, but doesn't have the power to break through in a big way. I don't think Charli is ever going to be a huge mainstream star, but she'll maintain a devoted following and have success and critical acclaim on her own terms.

Caught in the Middle reminds me of Nelly Furtado's last album.

This is on repeat for me. Such a fun and energetic album. Much more formed, cohesive, and just better than her debut. Head and shoulders above Iggy and Ariana's efforts. One of my favorite releases of the year.
