I'm officially passing up on song and getting in hate mode if it screws up things in the alt top 10 in the weeks to come.

I seriously doubt Elle could hit the notes Mandy does? That aside, it really just comes down to a matter of taste. I find Elle's vocals to be the same exact mess you think Mandy Lee's are. Top 10 or not, I'm just glad 91x still doesn't spin this, nor "Renegades" for that matter. :)

I'll agree that the melody of this is catchy and reminiscent of the Black Keys, but every time I hear her singing I dislike it more and more. She can't pull off the whole "southern country girl" voice, and I really don't think she needed to practically screech into the microphone while singing the chorus.

IMO this is really stretching the definition of Alternative - They should rename the format CHR/Alternative

Also, have you heard "America's Sweetheart"? - IMO it's straight up pop

When I first heard this song, pop was not what came to mind. Granted Alternative wasn't either but I'd say it fits in more with this climate than it would at pop. It's catchy enough for pop all the same though.

This is what I was trying to say, but I think Mike said it much better - IMO pop songs with guitars are getting sent to Alternative bc they fit in much better with the rest of the mix
Take out the electric guitars in this song and replace them with synths, and I feel like pop stations would be all over this already

I doubt it. It's closer to being a country song than a pop song in its delivery. But I suppose you change up the production to pretty much any song and turn it into a pop song.

Just add the name Zedd, Pitbull or some "X" rapper to the title and you have what is concidered a pop song nowadays. ::)This song is perfect for AAA, but I think that is where it should have stayed. it certainly wouldn't have won so much hatred.

They used to be separate formats. Are they not anymore?

They used to be separate formats. Are they not anymore? Ever since I started following the charts in 2012~, I don't recall there ever being a Rock one, just an Active and a Heritage/Mainstream.

Oh. R&R used to have Rock and Active Rock. I guess Mainstream Rock is the same as Rock.

They used to be separate formats. Are they not anymore? Mediabase still has a "Mainstream Rock" chart (mostly small market stations which combine Active and Classic Rock on one station) - the song at #10 has 108 spins (total, nationwide), the song at #30 has 19 spins (total, nationwide), and the song at #50 has 5 spins (total, nationwide)
I think these stations still show up in Neilson as just "Rock"

out of all the songs on Alternative that make a good argument for renaming it CHR/Alternative, you pick this one?I would also pick that one for the vocals alone. Meghan Trainor anyone? It was about a year ago that I was playing a random Indie mix that the Spotify pushed on me, and it was there that I heard the Meghan Trainor song for the first time, for some reason. I don't think it was even on the pop chart at the time; if it was, it was probably not yet in the top 40. I thought the sound of her vocals, especially while rapping, was so annoying that I had to choose a completely different playlist. Of course the song had to become unavoidable, so eventually I had to hear the words she was saying, and the song to me came off as thoroughly hateful and divisive, masquerading as 'inspirational', and masquerading as 'retro', to sound cool. I think it's really one of the worst songs not by Taylor Swift that I've heard in recent years. I guess Meghan and Miss King are similar in that I can see how both vocal styles can be an acquired taste, and it comes down to personal preference when I say I prefer Elle. Not a whole lot of other similarities besides that both of their figures could be described as "more to love", compared to most of their peers. But what I also like about "Ex's and Oh's" is that Elle doesn't have to try to explain herself by citing some lame advice that her Mama gave her, or anything like that. She just comes straight out and does her thing like there's no other way to do it. That's some serious confidence, and that's hot. That's my idea of girl power done right.

this struck me as guilty pleasure material the 1st time I heard it... an odd combo of Black Keys & Megan Trainor
I'm surprised that I still like it because it's so damn pop, but just like daleks and Uptown Funk, resistance is futile
