^Its sales are high - paying stations money to play a song that is already popular anyway would be like throwing money out the window
If any songs are being payola'd, it'd be songs with extremely low sales and low callout that are mysteriously high on the Alt airplay chart, like Moaning Lisa Smile or Little Monster

payola? after the spitzer investigation where labels had to employ an attorney general approved compliance officer that reviews all promotions done with radio? hmm. Maybe one promotion team is simply better and harder working than the next.

Is there any way someone could explain what forms of payola you guys are talking about? If people are using payola to mean deals between record labels and radio stations, that definitely goes on (especially on the CHR chart), but only for the first few weeks a new single is being released - if the single turns out to be a hit, it levels off where it would've been without the promotions, and if it turns out not to be a hit (like the new Maroon 5 single), the spins decrease, and it starts to plummet
X Ambassadors could've gotten a promotion deal, I guess, bc Dan from Imagine Dragons was behind them, but how do you guys think Elle King could've possibly gotten any kind of promotion package, when no one knew who she was? If anyone is going to get promotion packages from record labels on the Alternative chart, it's going to be the Foo Fighters, Muse, etc., not the folky acts that people for some reason keep accusing of "payola"
Also, if you scroll through the Alternative stations on AllAccess, more than half of them are owned by small, independent companies (only 20 stations are owned by IHeart, only 3 stations are owned by CBS, and only 3 stations are owned by Cumulus - a bunch are owned by Cox and Entercom, and the rest are all independent), so I don't know how you would possibly arrange a deal with more than 40 independent radio stations to all put Renegades into power rotation at the same time
Even if you were to pay off IHeart, CBS, Cumulus, Cox, and Entercom, that's still less than half the Alternative stations on the Mediabase panel - I don't know how any exchange of money would possibly work (and stay under the table)

Rarely brought up in these chart position discussions is quality of promotion team and relationships. That makes a massive difference. Elle King seems to be a sizeable reaction record - look at the sales. And the speed it has moved at. A la "Renegades" - a record that is also selling like crazy. Wolf Alice was mentioned on a post above. Not sure if you folks have seen the press on that band, but it Britain NME called it "the debut album of the decade". Still PDs who care about playing the right buzz bands

6 5 MUMFORD & SONS The Wolf 1849 1792 57 5.33 8 6 ELLE KING Ex's and Oh's 1840 1670 170 5.942
Get that top 5 smash! This is the most alternative song on the chart. It's good that this is being played more than many corporate tracks like The Struts and Phases.

I think this, The Wolf or Dreams will be the next alternative #1. Dreams hasn't slowed down like 21p did, but this song is currently outpacing "Dreams" in terms of spin gains, as is "The Wolf".

Remind me what was last female sung #1 on Alt? Something By Lorde? Yeah, Team went #1 on Mediabase last February, but not on Billboard. Royals was the last #1 on Billboard.

Remind me what was last female sung #1 on Alt? Something By Lorde? Going by Billboard #1s, the artists to hit #1 with a song including female vocals (bold if they had a song with no male vocals hit #1): Fitz and the Tantrums (The Walker, "Everybody walk!") Lorde (purely female vocals in Royals; hit #1 in August 2013) Grouplove (the bridge of Tongue Tied) Of Monsters and Men (Little Talks, a mix of female and male vocals) Janelle Monae (barely featured in We Are Young) Kimbra (featured in Somebody That I Used To Know) Evanescence (only Bring Me To Life, with Paul McCoy, hit #1) Hole (Celebrity Skin from 1998 is the last alt #1 by a band with only female vocals) Chumbawamba (Tubthumping had female vocals in the pre-chorus) Garbage (#1 Crush) Tracy Bonham (Mother Mother, 1996, the last female solo artist to hit #1 alt until Lorde) Alanis Morrisette (with several number one hits) Cranberries (Zombie and Salvation) Tori Amos (God) Belly (Feed the Tree) The Juliana Hatfield Thre (My Sister) 10,000 Maniacs (These Are Days) Suzanne Vega (with Blood Makes Noise, not with Tom's Diner) The Sugarcubes (Bjork sings Hit) Concrete Blonde (Joey) The Sundays (Here's Where the Story Ends) Sinead O'Connor (not just Nothing Compares 2 U but also The Emperor's New Clothes) Kate Bush (Love and Anger) The B-52s (a mix of male and female vocals on Love Shack and Channel Z) Siouxsie and the Banshees (with Kiss Them For Me and the very first alt #1, Peek-A-Boo)

Just curious, anyone upset that this got blocked from the AAA #1 on Billboard? (Beck blocked her)
Not surprised tbh, since Billboard has done this many time (other songs that got blocked include Hold Back the River, Down By the River (The Decemberists' song, not Milky Chance's song), Holding On for Life and Magnificent).

I'm kinda happy. Hopefully it's climb on Alt is just about over as well as Florence commences her climb into the top 10.

X-Ambassadors - Renegades 2. Elle King - Ex's and Oh's :'( > >:( :( :o I think that right about covers it for my thoughts.

This song is really bad but I think it fits Alt. Definitely worse than Glass Animals, they're basically Alt-J but better.

Not the best song in the world, but it fits the defination of Alt. Elle King ; on the other hand, is something I would expect to find on a Quentin Tarnatino movie soundtrack.

Everything on the Alt chart to me is much much better than Alt-J and Glass Animals :)

I'm sorry but if you don't think Elle King belongs on Alt, then you have to say the same about The Black Keys. This song is stylistically identical to several Black Keys songs. Her vocals are gritty enough for her not to be a run of the mill pop vocalist either.

I don't particularly care if this belongs on Alternative or not, but I wish so many people didn't like this (considering its success), lol.
Also, I think she's faking her Southern accent too, since she was raised in Ohio. It sounds way too forced, at least in this song.

I guess you've never been to Cincinnati (or at least the rural areas surrounding Cincinnati). VERY thick southern accent all along the Ohio River valley in southern Ohio. I grew up in Columbus & we would always make fun of the ppl in southern Ohio for their accent

IMO that's actually a really good point - the music is similar to the Black Keys, and the lyrics I think are the same "style" as Electric Love, and I don't think anyone has posted that Borns doesn't belong on Alt radio (unless I missed it)

What, the voice is a dead ringer for her or for Duffy or for Amy Winehouse....you know those retro 50-60s doo-wop singers + that fuzz to the max guitar sounds which I always relate to every Black Keys songs(well the 3-4 I know, Lonely Boy comes to mind) But yes, if this gets played on one of those analogues for HOT AC that we would have here in Estonia, i would not change the channel.
