Preliminary Round Three - ResultsNothing More - "This Is the Time (Ballast)" (Devin, #2) Switchfoot - "When We Come Alive" (American Idiot, #7) The Gaslight Anthem - "Get Hurt" (Green Baron, #2) Adelitas Way - "Dog On a Leash" (Shadowscorp, #7) Against Me! - "Unconditional Love" (American Idiot, #2) Matisyahu - "Watch the Walls Melt Down" (Mike the Moose, #7) The Dirty Heads - "My Sweet Summer" (dm2081, #2) Grouplove - "I'm With You" (Lordeftones, #8) Joywave - "Tongues" f/ KOPPS (Lahey, #2) Pop Evil - "Torn to Pieces" (Cody, #7) Bastille - "Flaws" (Invince, #2) SomeKindaWonderful - "Reverse" (The Webinator, #7) Death From Above 1979 - "Trainwreck 1979" (Pipa, #2) Lorde - "Glory and Gore" (Devin, #7) Royal Blood - "Out of the Black" (The Webinator, #2) Kings of Leon - "Wait For Me" (Pipa, #7) Avenged Sevenfold - "This Means War" (Shadowscorp, #2) Future Islands - "Seasons (Waiting on You)" (Lordeftones, #7) {NOTES}1. This one was extremely close. Nothing More, despite being critically acclaimed by this board, was actually losing big time against Switchfoot at the beginning. But as the round progressed, the gap between the two tightened and the lead went back and forth several times. In the end, "Ballast" won by a vote of 10-9.
2. This one was kinda close too, although The Gaslight Anthem held the lead during the whole round I believe. "Get Hurt" wins by a vote of 11-8.
3. Seemed no one really cared for either of these. "Unconditional Love" prevailed though, with a vote of 13-6.
4. Another close call. The Dirty Heads take this bracket by a vote of 10-8.
5. Joywave blows Pop Evil away by a vote of 14-5. But it wasn't the biggest blow-out.
6. "Flaws" wins big-time by a vote of 16-3. Bastille are the biggest blow-out for this round.
7. Death From Above 1979 wrecked Lorde by a vote of 11-8.
8. These two were pretty tied up at the start, but Royal Blood slowly distanced themselves to become the winners. They win by a vote of 13-6.
9. Also close. At first the lead was being handed back and forth, but later Avenged Sevenfold took it and ran by a vote of 12-7.

Really hating how Future Islands, one of my top picks of this year, ended up losing to what's essentially a poor man's version of "Sad but True"

Royal Blood - "Figure It Out" (Lordeftones, #2) Demon Hunter - "The Last One Alive" (Mandrakegray, #7)
Egads!! Two of my favorite songs of the year facing off against each other! The D. Hunter track topped the Christian Rock Chart over the summer, while R. Blood is one of the best stories at Active this year. Tough one for me.
Arctic Monkeys - "R U Mine?" (Cody, #2)
Kongos - "I'm Only Joking" (cm7com, #7)
Cage the Elephant - "Take It or Leave It" (dm2081, #7)
Redlight King - "Times Are Hard" (Mandrakegray, #2) Weezer - "Back to the Shack" (Green Baron, #7)
Man...ANOTHER tough draw. The Weezer track is fun, but nothing particularly special to me. "Times Are Hard" is one of my favorites of the entire year. Stripped down, with a classic rock vibe. Good message. Big RK fan.
Man Man - "Head On (Hold On to My Heart)" (Popstop, #2)
Morning Parade - "Alienation" (Mike the Moose, #3)
Three Days Grace - "Painkiller" (dm2081, #6)
Theory of a Deadman - "Drown" (cm7com, #6)

Royal Blood - "Figure It Out" (Lordeftones, #2) Demon Hunter - "The Last One Alive" (Mandrakegray, #7) <pretty solid song, but I've really been into the 2nd Royal Blood single recently so it was going to be hard to dethrone it.
Arctic Monkeys - "R U Mine?" (Cody, #2) Godsmack - "1000hp" (Invince, #7) this matchup might have been the easiest one to decide so far.
Vampire Weekend - "Step" (Shakermaker, #2) Kongos - "I'm Only Joking" (cm7com, #7) still can't find much I like about Vampire Weekend, and the Kongos song has been big recently so it wins.
Orwells - "Who Needs You" (Mike the Moose, #2) Cage the Elephant - "Take It or Leave It" (dm2081, #7) I like the Orwells song initially but later realized it wasn't all that great imo. The CtE song isn't their best but it's still enjoyable.
Redlight King - "Times Are Hard" (Mandrakegray, #2) first listen of the Redlight King track. Enjoyable and much better than the Weezer comeback single. Weezer - "Back to the Shack" (Green Baron, #7)
Man Man - "Head On (Hold On to My Heart)" (Popstop, #2) Lana Del Rey - "West Coast" (Lahey, #7) the man man track was catchy and I can't stand Lana Del Rey so this was an easy choice.
Morning Parade - "Alienation" (Mike the Moose, #3) Young Rising Sons - "High" (Popstop, #7) the Young Rising Songs chorus grates on me, so I couldn't put it through.
Agent Fresco - "Dark Water" (Devin, #3) Three Days Grace - "Painkiller" (dm2081, #6) this was close, but i found the 3DG song a bit too generic.
The War on Drugs - "Red Eyes" (Green Baron, #3) Theory of a Deadman - "Drown" (cm7com, #6) just getting into Drown and "Red Eyes" didn't do much for me.

Royal Blood - "Figure It Out" (Lordeftones, #2)Demon Hunter - "The Last One Alive" (Mandrakegray, #7) <pretty solid song, but I've really been into the 2nd Royal Blood single recently so it was going to be hard to dethrone it. I had the host of the midday show on our Talk AM station use "Figure It Out" as bumper music today. Seeing three people (including a guest) in the studio immediately start headbanging was the early highlight of my day. Songwise, "The Last One Alive", to me, is so much more worthy of support on Active than some of the recent singles by format mainstays like Avenged Sevenfold and 5FDP. To me, they do the combination of heavy and melodic just as well...if not better. The song has yet to reach the Top 40 of the chart, despite being somewhat close for several weeks. It looks like it's winding down, unfortunately. In addition to its success on Christian Rock Radio, it has stayed on Octane's Top 15 playlist for months now. Despite one getting knocked out as a result...I'm happy that at least one of these two songs gets to advance!

Royal Blood - "Figure It Out" (Lordeftones, #2) - Finally something I can win The Last One Alive was really underrated but Royal Blood is amazing, listening to their album right now. Demon Hunter - "The Last One Alive" (Mandrakegray, #7)
Arctic Monkeys - "R U Mine?" (Cody, #2) - No contest, I love R U Mine? especially when compared to a subpar Godsmack single. Godsmack - "1000hp" (Invince, #7)
Vampire Weekend - "Step" (Shakermaker, #2) Kongos - "I'm Only Joking" (cm7com, #7) - I like both of these songs but I'm Only Joking edges out because KONGOS.
Orwells - "Who Needs You" (Mike the Moose, #2) Cage the Elephant - "Take It or Leave It" (dm2081, #7) - I liked this song a lot more when I first heard than I do now but still edges out Orwells.
Redlight King - "Times Are Hard" (Mandrakegray, #2) - I really wish Weezer were going up against a better song so they'd have a bigger chance of losing. Weezer - "Back to the Shack" (Green Baron, #7)
Man Man - "Head On (Hold On to My Heart)" (Popstop, #2) Lana Del Rey - "West Coast" (Lahey, #7) - Man is great but Lana is BAE <3
Morning Parade - "Alienation" (Mike the Moose, #3) - Both are fine songs but I've seen these guys in concert and this song speaks to me more. Young Rising Sons - "High" (Popstop, #7)
Agent Fresco - "Dark Water" (Devin, #3) - Hadn't heard this song before but I surprisingly enjoyed it quite a bit. Enough to edge out a subpar "TDG" single. Three Days Grace - "Painkiller" (dm2081, #6)
The War on Drugs - "Red Eyes" (Green Baron, #3) Theory of a Deadman - "Drown" (cm7com, #6) - A major highlight on a disappointing record.

Royal Blood - "Figure It Out" (Lordeftones, #2) Demon Hunter - "The Last One Alive" (Mandrakegray, #7) - I don't understand what all the rage about Royal Blood is, they sound very generic to me.
Arctic Monkeys - "R U Mine?" (Cody, #2) Godsmack - "1000hp" (Invince, #7) - I have never been able to get into Arctic Monkeys. 1000hp is a pretty good workout song, so it wins pretty easily for me.
Vampire Weekend - "Step" (Shakermaker, #2) Kongos - "I'm Only Joking" (cm7com, #7) - Loved Vampire Weekend's first two albums, but they lost me on the last one.
Orwells - "Who Needs You" (Mike the Moose, #2) Cage the Elephant - "Take It or Leave It" (dm2081, #7) - Cage The Elephant is one of my favorite bands. Orwells sounds too much like Arctic Monkeys for my liking.
Redlight King - "Times Are Hard" (Mandrakegray, #2) Weezer - "Back to the Shack" (Green Baron, #7) - Something about Weezer that makes all their songs somewhat enjoyable.
Man Man - "Head On (Hold On to My Heart)" (Popstop, #2) Lana Del Rey - "West Coast" (Lahey, #7) - At least Lana Del Rey is unique, and West Coast is actually one of my favorites by her.
Morning Parade - "Alienation" (Mike the Moose, #3) Young Rising Sons - "High" (Popstop, #7) - This was a toss up, but High is slightly more memorable.
Agent Fresco - "Dark Water" (Devin, #3) Three Days Grace - "Painkiller" (dm2081, #6) - Painkiller is an epic workout song. Dark Water was ok, but not as memorable.
The War on Drugs - "Red Eyes" (Green Baron, #3) - Red Eyes is one of the most underrated songs in this bracket IMO. Theory of a Deadman - "Drown" (cm7com, #6)

1. "The Last One Alive" was pretty good on first listen, but "Figure It Out" was still stronger.
2. I'm sorry, but I've been a fan of Godsmack for a long time, and while the new Arctic Monkeys song is good, I'm more a fan of "1000hp".
3. "Step" is the most boring single released from Vampire Weekend this era. "I'm Only Joking" eclipses this.
4. "Who Needs You" sounds better than nearly anything by Cage the Elephant, including this song.
5. Never was much a fan of Redlight King.
6. Neither song stood out to me, but I'll take "Head On", since I don't like "West Coast". (I'm pretty sure the former peaked in the winter though).
7. My god, "High" was annoying to listen to. "Alienation" easily.
8. "Dark Waters" was meh. "Painkiller", however, is great.
9. "Red Eyes" was impressive on first listen, but "Drown" is the strongest single TOAD have put out in a while. The latter gets my vote.

I like "Figure It Out" on first listen, so it takes my vote. 2. I really like Arctic Monkeys, so it takes my vote. Also, I didn't like "1000hp" too much. 3. Both of them are really good, but I'll go with "I'm Only Joking". 4. Not so into the Cage Elephant track, so "Who Needs You" takes my vote. 5. I prefer "Back to the Shack" over "Times Are Hard", so I'll go with former. 6. Well, this was hard. "Head On (Hold On to Your Heart)" was so good on first listen, but I'll have been listening more to "West Coast" and I'll prefer it over the aforementioned. 7. Oh! The Young Rising Sons track is really good. It takes my vote. 8. I prefer "Dark Water" on first listen. As a consequence, it takes my vote. 9. I like "Red Eyes" on first listen more than "Drown".

Royal Blood - "Figure It Out" (Lordeftones, #2) Demon Hunter - "The Last One Alive" (Mandrakegray, #7) This was my first time listening to "The Last One Alive" and I liked it! The only bad thing about (which is apparent in FFDP's softer songs) is that the vocals are a little too monotone throughout the whole song. Gave the vote to Demon Hunter since I kinda like it better than "Figure It Out", which is good too.
Arctic Monkeys - "R U Mine?" (Cody, #2) Godsmack - "1000hp" (Invince, #7) I still have yet to understand why Arctic Monkeys are so loved on here, espeically their latest album. I don't like any of the songs. I don't care for "1000hp" as it's a little generic, but it gets my vote.
Vampire Weekend - "Step" (Shakermaker, #2) Kongos - "I'm Only Joking" (cm7com, #7) Not a fan of Vampire Weekend at all. KONGOS automatically.
Orwells - "Who Needs You" (Mike the Moose, #2) Cage the Elephant - "Take It or Leave It" (dm2081, #7) Same goes with Cage the Elephant as Arctic Monkeys. Never understood all the praise for these guys. "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked" still remains as one of the most overrated songs in my book. I have "Who Needs You" on my iPod, but I have never listened to the whole thing till now. I like it!
Redlight King - "Times Are Hard" (Mandrakegray, #2) Weezer - "Back to the Shack" (Green Baron, #7) Never really liked Weezer either, but I do sort of like "Back to the Shack". "Times Are Hard" was good, but it's too generic.
Man Man - "Head On (Hold On to My Heart)" (Popstop, #2) Lana Del Rey - "West Coast" (Lahey, #7) Lana Del Rey is hot af, but I hate her music lol. Man Man for the win.
Morning Parade - "Alienation" (Mike the Moose, #3) Young Rising Sons - "High" (Popstop, #7) Both were alright, but forgettable. Apparently Young Rising Sons are supposed to be the next American Authors... I don't see it.
Agent Fresco - "Dark Water" (Devin, #3) Three Days Grace - "Painkiller" (dm2081, #6) "Painkiller" is one of my favorite Active songs of the year. Don't like "Dark Water".
The War on Drugs - "Red Eyes" (Green Baron, #3) Theory of a Deadman - "Drown" (cm7com, #6) "Red Eyes" was just meh. "Drown" for me.
This was a lot harder than the previous rounds. I liked pretty much everything the same, and each matchup had a song I didn't know.

here goes!
Royal Blood - "Figure It Out" (Lordeftones, #2) Demon Hunter - "The Last One Alive" (Mandrakegray, #7) Though I really didn't care for any of those two; Royal Blood is a bit more Rock n Roll. Demon Hunter is'n bad, but it's missing something.
Arctic Monkeys - "R U Mine?" (Cody, #2) Godsmack - "1000hp" (Invince, #7) Godsmack. No Contest! I love The Artic Monkeys, but "R U Mine" is one of my least favs on thier album.
Vampire Weekend - "Step" (Shakermaker, #2) Kongos - "I'm Only Joking" (cm7com, #7) I'm actually barely getting into The vampire Weekend song. It didn't last long on Alt top 40, but it's better than Kongos song. I wasn't a big fan of "Come With Me" either.
Orwells - "Who Needs You" (Mike the Moose, #2) Cage the Elephant - "Take It or Leave It" (dm2081, #7) This is one of my top 10 songs right now! I really only got into Cage The Elephant this year, but I love the vocal delivery of "Take It Or leave It" I never liked the Orwells song one bit.
Redlight King - "Times Are Hard" (Mandrakegray, #2) Weezer - "Back to the Shack" (Green Baron, #7) Weezer's song is adictively catchy ! No contest! The Cars= my 80s fav. Weezer= my 90s fav. Weezer and Ric Ocasek go hand in hand. I was starting to like the Red Light King when it was just a lyric video. The actual vid for the song made me get bored of it quick.
Man Man - "Head On (Hold On to My Heart)" (Popstop, #2) Lana Del Rey - "West Coast" (Lahey, #7) I'd have to choose Lana, cuz I didn't like that other song at all. I really liked Lana's "Summertime Sadness" The original. Not that EDM shit remix.
Morning Parade - "Alienation" (Mike the Moose, #3) Young Rising Sons - "High" (Popstop, #7) Morning Parade has the indie Synth Pop sound I'm really into right now. I'm actually starting to give it some spins. It should make an appearance on my weekly 50 soon enough. Young Rising Sons is also oozing Indie, but I still prefer Morning parade's sound.
Agent Fresco - "Dark Water" (Devin, #3) Three Days Grace - "Painkiller" (dm2081, #6) I was surprised to find the Agent Fresco sound more appealing. never heard of them till this moment. Very different, but good. If Adam had sang "painkiller" I would hold it higher. I'm bias that way.
The War on Drugs - "Red Eyes" (Green Baron, #3) Theory of a Deadman - "Drown" (cm7com, #6) Though I'm not a big fan of TOAD's new sound. I'd still have to choose "Drown" for the semi-cool chorus. The only part of the song that even resembles TOAD's sound

Since you choose to single out my song... I look at these songs and there are some that don't fit the summer anthem rule ??? like "Head On", which peaked in December of last year whatevs tho ...it's legit under Devin's rules. Could you please select some different songs that were released within the past year or so? I'd rather have newer songs for this. Everyone else had gone before me, so the pickings were pretty slim for summer songs I liked and listened to at that point. I hadn't heard the Man Man song until springtime and have played it since so it's a summer song for me.
