Is the great Alternative-to-Pop crossover wave over?
We haven't had a really big pop hit from alternative music since "Pompeii." "Come With Me Now" fizzled out in the teens; "Do I Wanna Know" and "The Walker" did nothing; and "I Wanna Get Better" is DOA on pop radio.

The current wave doesn't look too promising. Riptide, Stolen Chance, ugh.

I hope not, at least for the moment. I want "Dangerous" and "Riptide" to smash, then it could be over lol.

Riptide has a pretty good chance to be successful as does Stolen Dance to a slightly lesser degree. I'd love to see Dangerous and Take Me To Church crossover but they're definitely shakier. But no, I don't think the wave is over, I'm sure one of those four songs will go Top 10, probably Top 5 pop. It just comes in cycles and we're in an off cycle.

I'd like to see how Fun., Lorde, and Imagine Dragons do if/when they release new music. Anyway, 'A Sky Full of Stars' seems to be doing well and 'Come With Me Now' had some minor success.

I really hope it's done. I've never been much of a fan of the alternative genre. My work has a playlist of today's hits and I always find myself groaning when something alternative comes on.

Too soon to tell. In any event, this "wave" lately has been songs popping up every so often to fill the (too few IMO) "rock slots" (in Sean Ross' term) at CHR, not a whole bunch of genre songs hitting at once. Since these hits have kind of come out of left field and in some cases taken us by surprise, more such hit songs certainly can't be ruled out. Plus some of the recent hitmaking acts have good potential for followups, particularly those that have had more than one hit so far.

I feel like in fun's case, they're more likely to follow in the footsteps of someone like maroon 5 with their next album, meaning it won't (or shouldn't) really quality as alternative. It'll be a hit out of the box though. I was expecting it this fall really

Then there's "A Sky Full Of Stars". That song is more Pop than Alternative - the only reason it's charting on Alt is because it's from Coldplay, a traditionally rock band. Heck, even Linkin Park's dubstep track made the top 10 on Alt.

I like having the Alternative diversity in there, not an overload of it, but I love listening to radio and hearing an alt song, then a urban song, and then a pop song! It keeps it fresh! I hope Riptide smashes!!!

I don't think we can say the Alternative crossover is dead at Pop right now when "Stolen Dance" and "Riptide" are both destined for overplay by year's end.

Honestly, Stolen Dance, Dangerous and even Floptide are destined to be hits given their success on the format.
