313 LAY ME DOWN The Dirty Heads feat. Rome Ramirez #1 for 11 weeks, 41 weeks on chart [2010]
Ugh. The early 2010s gave us lots of reggae hits on the format, from the reincarnated Sublime With Rome to the pride of Nebraska that is 311, and Slightly Stoopid and Pepper also got some airplay. But perhaps the worst one that charted had to immediately shoot straight for the top and stay there for an eternity. If there was anything worse than this uninspired drivel reaching #1, it's the fact that it held the crown for eleven weeks. ELEVEN WEEKS. That's almost three months long that this cod-reggae crap topped the Alternative chart for. How in the hell is that justified. I think I'll just give you a list of songs in the top ten that it blocked from the top that deserved it a hell lot more than "Lay Me Down" did. "The Royal We"... "Letters to the Sky"... "The Crow and the Butterfly"... "Lisztomania"... the list goes on and on and on and on and on. Rome would chart a few more times in the 2010s, but they were all better, better than this.

312 TOO CLOSE Alex Clare #1 for 4 weeks, 36 weeks on chart [2012]
This mix of indie folk and dubstep eventually went on to become a huge Pop crossover hit, peaking at #7 on the Hot 100 and gaining popularity through a commercial for Internet Explorer 8. Unfortunately, that doesn't make this song any better. First of all, the mish-mash of folk and dubstep works incredibly against its favor, sounding disjointed and sloppy, and the sudden transition from Clare crooning over his acoustic guitar to an onslaught of wubs doesn't flow as naturally as it could have. I will say this, Clare's voice isn't that bad, but this did not deserve to be one of the year's biggest songs on the Alternative or the Pop charts. It's just so annoying every time I hear it. And again with the stupid videos...

311 TONGUE TIED Grouplove #1 for 1 week, 43 weeks on chart [2012]
Oh Lord. Here we have a song that's so upbeat and sugar-coated that it's bound to give you diabetes within the first thirty seconds. Ugh. Everything about this song is just so damn annoying - lead singer Christian Zucconi has such an irritating voice, the synths are offbeat, and the whole thing is just so happy and uptempo and I hate it all. Strangely enough, this is one of Grouplove's better songs. Speaks wonders about their talents as a band. Anyway, "Tongue Tied" is irritating in all the wrong ways. There's simply nothing redeemable about it. It's like they tried to make some of the most pestering noises, combine them together into a s**t sandwich, and this is our result. I mean, how the hell did anyone think this was a good idea? It's practically the band's formula - every song they make is this annoying crap recycled over and over again.

I like "Butterfly" and "Hero" but honestly they are kind of forgettable.
I am kind of disappointed that "Too Close" and "Tongue Tied" (commentary?) are so low.

I don't like Tongue Tied, but I don't think it should be that low. I really enjoyed Too Close though, sad to find it this far down though from what I've gathered of your musical tastes it doesn't shock me. Also the ad that made the song popular was for IE8, not Windows 8.

Love "Psycho" and like "Hero", both would be much higher on my list. "Lay Me Down" and "Too Close" are right where they belong though as those are two godawful songs. I generally like Grouplove but "Tongue Tied" is their worst single, and from that album I much prefer both "Colors" and "Itchin' On A Photograph".
Fun fact about the Spiderman Soundtrack though. It produced an additional big rock hit in Canada besides "Hero" in Sum 41's "What We're All About". I still can't believe they never pushed that in the US.

#308 - I actually like "Psycho". It's a bit of a guilty pleasure and it's stuck in my head for days whenever I hear it.
#307 - Good to see it low.
#306 - It's mediocre but not that bad, but the fact it was #1 for 11 weeks (I didn't even know that) makes it more intolerable for me, lol.
#305 - Shouldn't even have made the Alt chart, should've stayed on CHR. One hit wonder anyway.
#304 - I like that song, it's cheerful, looking forward to the commentary.

I followed a blog from 2005 which had ranked every alternative #1 up to that point, so I'll be interested in seeing how this goes. I've always wanted to do a similar list but never had the time, plus it would be practically impossible to rank so many songs I love for competing places in the upper half of the list.
I love "Too Close" and "Tongue Tied" and played them to death when they were first released so naturally I disagree with their rather low placings. "Psycho" not as good but I'll probably be one of the few people on the board to rep for it, though "Hero" is indeed abhorrent.
"Butterfly" is an interesting case of a song I initially hated but slowly developed some attachment to due to radio overplay. Nice sampled RHCP groove.
If I'd done this list I'd probably have placed P.O.D.'s "Youth of the Nation" dead last.

Also, 1996 and 2003 are my favorite years as far as #1 hits are concerned.

Bottom 5, in order from lesser of two evils to worst: 5.) "Demons" 4.) "Mysterious Ways" 3.) "It's Been Awhile" 2.) "Higher" 1.) "Blurry"
All of them are still better than "Sail".

310 GOOD STUFF The B-52's #1 for 4 weeks, 9 weeks on chart [1992]
Here I like to present to you the 90s equivalent of Grouplove, a band so upbeat and annoyingly sugarcoated I can't stand anything they make. And "Good Stuff" is no exception - that title is a complete lie, there is no good stuff to be found on this song at all. While the beat is passable enough, that does not justify the annoying "bom-bom"s in the background, the irritating vocals of Kate Pierson or the monotonous drivel that passes as singing from the mouth of Fred Schneider. This whole song is just annoyingly cheery and cheesy, and that's not even mentioning the fact that it drags on for six minutes. SIX f**king MINUTES OF THIS s**t OVER AND OVER AGAIN. I'd say more about it, but I'd just be repeating what I said about "Tongue Tied".

309 BELIEVE Staind #1 for 3 weeks, 21 weeks on chart [2008]
So yeah, 2008. As I said earlier, it's not as bad as people claim it to be, but songs like this really don't help its case. Like Puddle of Mudd before them, Staind's last few singles failed to go #1 (their last one before this was 2003's "So Far Away"), so it was quite a shock when a song that pretty much defined s**tty Active Rock topped the Alternative charts. And personal gripes aside, it's just not a very good song. It's bland as hell, the lyrics are pretty cheesy, and it just drags and drags and drags for four minutes, but it seems like much longer. It just goes nowhere, arriving somewhere but not here, where it should be, and for that it ranks amongst some of the worst songs to ever top the Alternative charts. You were meant for chasing dreams, right Aaron? So why don't you go finish that illustrious solo country career that we're all dying to hear more of?

The B-52's, there's a band I can agree with you having them so far down. I guess their quirkiness was their appeal; no idea really. Good Stuff reminds me of Grouplove's Shark Attack (or the other way around, whatever), a veritable blender of sound that has no identity whatsoever.

I like the B-52s song, but thank heavens you have "Believe" so low, just an awful song, and I can't believe I personal charted it (#37 peak)

That "Good Stuff" song is pretty annoying, but I do like some of the B-52s' stuff ("Love Shack, "Rock Lobster").
As for "Believe", it's bland, boring and bad, but still a cut above "It's Been Awhile". That one is terrible, looking forward to see it within the next 3 songs, lol.

Staind over the B-52's srsly Kate and Fred are absolute legends - speaking as a B-52's fan "Good Stuff" is by no means their best work but I'm sure there have been far worse #1s in alternative history Please don't put "Love Shack" at #300 or something :'(

It's probably the reason "Believe" sucks so much, as its such a poor, lazy attempt at recreating "It's Been Awhile"

308 BLURRY Puddle of Mudd #1 for 9 weeks, 34 weeks on chart [2002]
Well, here we have it. Puddle of Mudd's second and last Alternative chart-topper is here, and I guess that speaks wonders about the quality of their music. Their only #1 songs fell rather early, but I just could not put anything they made any higher at all. Wes Scantlin's vocals are still as annoying as ever, the instrumentation and production is generic, and when he yells out the unfortunately iconic cry of "CAN YOU TAKE IT ALL AWAY?", all I can say is, "Yes. Please take this song away." "Blurry" is one of the most irritating songs to ever hit #1 on the Alternative charts, and even in the apex for generic post-grunge amongst nu-metal, this stands out as one of the worst. And to think it was a successful Pop crossover too...

307 BEVERLY HILLS Weezer #1 for 1 week, 27 weeks on chart [2005]
This song is pretty much credited for beginning the downfall of Weezer. Their first two albums, The Blue Album and Pinkerton were 90s alt-rock classics, but there was a significant drop from Pink to The Green Album, which was just ok and had a few horrible songs. That was in 2001. By the time 2005 had rolled around, Weezer's fifth album, the aptly-titled Make Believe, it was clear that they could no longer do anything good anymore, and lead single "Beverly Hills" was the perfect indication of it. It was their biggest Pop hit, peaking at #10 on the Hot 100 and #2 on Mainstream Top 40, but all I can ask is why? Why not something like "Perfect Situation", or "Pink Triangle" or "El Scorcho"? All those songs deserved to be the band's defining song, not this song, which is just as much as a piece of crap as Rivers thinks his automobile is. From his lazily faux-rapped verses to the annoying "gimme gimme"s in the chorus, "Beverly Hills" is boring, uninspired and just devoid of any goodness. Well there is the instrumental section, and that one part in the second verse, but the rest... ugh.

#301 - Oh come on, Blurry is pretty good. Those harmonics at the beginning are amazing. Lyrically it's average.
#300 - I used to really like Beverly Hills when it came out, but 10 years later I find it's nothing special. #300 though? Ouch

I like both of those songs, although "Beverly Hills" hasn't aged as well as some of Weezer's other singles.
