Didn't she also get 7 days while Britney had 6? Is that right? If so, was there a way for them to determine a 7 day total for Britney? It wasn't an apples to apples comparison anyway because the album sales climate is worse now so Britney had an advantage in that regard. But I didn't realize they would not have the same number of days in the reporting period.

As far as I know, the tracking week has always been Monday to Sunday. Is this not the case?

It has been, but albums were always released on Tuesdays. Monday release dates have only popped up in recent years.

Platinum comes from the RIAA, so not sure why some still associate it with SoundScan. Unless the RIAA is certifying Swift's album for 1 million out of the gate?

No. They never have. SoundScan only covered 60% of retailers when they began point of sale counting. SoundScan has never counted record club sales which were big in the 80s and 90s. How it works: Labels contact the RIAA to start the certification process. The RIAA audits the label's *shipping* records. The label pays the fee. Only $350. The RIAA issues the certification.

Screw Spotify Taylor writes her own music she deserves to choose to do what she wants with her music. It can be a push for last minute sales who knows? I think this has way more to do with her label rather than her though.

I get it, and I never alluded that there is a direct connection between the two organizations (not sure if the post above was directed towards me about thinking otherwise). But I think SoundScan data is very useful in determining whether an album is certifiable or not; based on the ability to predict shipments based on sales.

Since Taylor sold 1 million last week, her label should apply for that Platinum certification and the RIAA should issue it immediately. But they'll probably do what they did with Red. After 30 days at retail, Big Machine will certify it Gold, Platinum, 2xP and 3xP with the RIAA.

How the album is likely at least double platinum already. And will be certified gold-3x platinum at the same time.

Billboard is going to want to have something out to assure it maximizes page views and doesn't (again) look like it got b*tched by other music websites. The question is how much it will milk the reveal. Will it reveal "It's #1 with a seven-figure total?" Will it reveal it "Broke the record, and data will follow tomorrow?" Or will it just reveal the full sales total today and say tomorrow will bring the rest of the top ten?

I don't know why they just don't make Monday the unofficial release date now. Even shipping can make Mondays physical album releases a reality these days. Monday was a "buffer" day because of physical releases and shipping. In fact, many stores routinely violated street dates by selling early. Monday was acceptable because it was in chart week, but some stores received shipments on Friday or Saturday. I could've sworn one HUGE album actually Bubbled Under (meaning a few sales on Sunday?) before it crashed on big chart the following week. It may have been No Strings Attached. Most of this is completely moot with far fewer retailers and, of course, digital, etc. So can't really use the 6-day v. 7-day argument. Also, those were days when you could "reserve" your copy ahead of release and people would buy multiple copies (for car, home, etc.) because computer ripping was just getting started. (Yes, it was funny to see people buy three copies of NSA or OIDIA for those purposes).

I remember a few albums that I would pre-order on Amazon back in the day would get delivered the Saturday before they were supposed to be released. I would assume those sales would be counted in the week before the official release.

I remember the Super Tuesday that Destiny's Child, Lil Jon and another big CD was released and they all charted the previous week due to street date violation. I'll see if I can find the article. Edit: www.billboard.com/articles/news/65596/eminem-takes-early-encore-to-no-1Destiny's Child moved 61K (#19 Debut) and Lil Jon moved 31K (#31 Debut)

Most Wal-Mart stores had them on the shelves the Friday before release. I bought the Destiny's Child album that weekend and contributed to that street date violation.

Yeah I found the article and edited my post. They both experienced HUGE increases the next week due to it. It was more than likely due to Eminem's CD being released that Friday.

And speaking of Em, The Eminem Show debuted at no. one largely on the strength of street date violations (the label had officially moved the release date to a Sunday I think, but stores were putting it on the shelves that Friday).
