This is where not being on Spotify is finally hurting her on the charts. This could be higher on the H100 by this point and maybe have a chance at #1 in a few weeks with streaming play.

Been hearing this on the radio a lot! My favourite singles would have to be #1 - Style #2 - Wildest Dreams (radio edit) #3 - Blank Space #4 - Shake It Off/Bad Blood (I can't decide which I prefer more) I really hope Out Of The Woods is next, and the video is a dark, winter theme in a wooded area with a good story line. Definitely my favourite cover art of the era (if this is 'official')

The fact that the Teenage Dream era was 5 years ago is seriously freaking me out. It still feels so recent to me.

If we're keeping it real. :) I'd prefer answers with artists who are currently doing this, or have been able to do it recently, not 5 years ago. Except eras like this only come around once every 2-3 years. And it only happens once per artist unless you are Michael Jackson. Katy had her time, it went to Adele, and now it's Taylor's turn. Taylor will likely never have the level of success that she's getting from 1989 ever again. So I'd be careful with that smugness. Also, the Teenage Dream era ended 3 years ago, not 5.

Taylor's been able to top herself with each cd consistently for almost 10 years. I don't expect her to duplicate the success of 1989 but her "least" successful era was 4x times more successful than Katy's latest one so regardless of what happens next, being careful with a humble brag based her current unparalleled success isn't much of a concern at all. Taylor's had her "time" time and time again, it's just that 1989 is so huge that it makes the other eras seem small when the reality is that she's by far the most successful and influential artist of the past decade. That said, anyone who expects her to do as well as she's doing now or is dying to call her a flop if she doesn't open with 1M+ copies or has 5 top 10's is just sad but the reality is the comparisons are stupid. My original comment wasn't meant to take away from anyone else's achievements. I'm well aware of Katy's past radio success.

I wouldn't even call her the most successful either.

I struggle to think of anyone that has been as consistently successful as Taylor Swift at least in America (is this her fourth or fifth cd in a row that has sold 4 million+ or will sell that much?) but the problem is that influence is a tricky, slippery subject matter. We focus on charts so we tend to equate success=influential, but that isn't always how it goes in reality. In all honesty, I think it would be very hard to judge who will actually be remembered for being influential and important 10, 20, 30 years from now. It doesn't always easily correlate with quantifiable success (though sometimes it does). I can definitely think of some artists who were basically deemed "legends" for a few years and then faded for one reason or another or, on the flip side, some of the people we call legends today weren't necessarily called that during their initial runs.
So, who knows. But, Taylor really is amazing. Her success is stunning. I am happy for her because no one can claim that she doesn't work hard!

"Success" isn't just album sales and #1's tho, unless you specifically say that. Success to me is the entire package, the entire brand of an artist. What does Forbes say?

I think when looking at "most successful" you need to look at sales and touring first and foremost IMO. Is there any artist since 2005 that has sold more albums, singles, AND grossed as much touring as Taylor? Just curious? I mean, I know your Madonna/Celine/U2's have had amazingly successful tours, but I mean cumulatively including all three components. I would assume Katy and RiRi have sold more singles, but haven't trumped her on the other two fronts. It's definitely interesting to look at.

Yes, "success" is a highly subjective term. If you say album sales, singles, and touring receipts, then yes, Taylor has it no doubt.
But success could also mean "who has generated the most income" since 2005?
Take AHS: Lady Gaga, for example. That will surely be included in her Forbes total. Should that not count? How bout perfumes, clothing lines, TV commercials, movies, etc? Should Katy's "Part of Me" documentary not count? How bout Jlo's clothing line?
I guess what I'm trying to say is that Taylor, the musician, is the most successful. But Taylor, the "brand", quite possibly is not.
Cuz when you buy a tshirt at a Taylor concert, does that not go into the touring receipts?

She made $80 million last year without touring. There should be absolutely no questioning her success.
She's the biggest and most influential musician in the world right now, bar none.

I still want AYHTDWS to be a single. I don't get all the hype over OOTW. AYHTDWS is one of my favorite songs period, and her best song. People always say it is cheesy, but the emotion and everything in it is just so perfect to me. Every song doesn't have to be some well written song (which is also in the eye of the beholder anyways) to be a single release. I just really wish she would do New Romantics as a single as well. They should do at least 2 more singles. One to start of 2015, one for the spring then take the entire summer off and release the lead single from the next album to kick off the fall

I would actually say if we are just looking at money earned that argues even more for Taylor's success. She is making insane money every year even when not actively touring which is where most money usually comes from. It isn't an exact science, but her net worth is estimated to be higher than or equal to people like Katy and Gaga and that is not even counting the majority of her 1989 era and tour.
Of course, it gets trickier even looking at overall income because someone like Jessica Simpson is making bank from a fluke success in a company that she happens to have her name attached to. Most wouldn't say that she is more influential or bigger than some artists who may technically be making less. I also don't think just money should count-if I am correct, Katy Perry didn't make much from the Super Bowl (I forget how all that went down, but I am assuming that in itself didn't add hundreds of millions to her worth) and Gaga won't make much from AHS, but both of those count in different ways, yes? I don't know. Its all very fluid and just depends.

Ryan Adams does a cover of the WHOLE album on the strength of the song writing, others are covering and releasing the singles. If that isn't influential, what is? Seriously? I'm not much of a Taylor Swift fan, but let's get real. Most artists on top are fairly influential. Probably the biggest artist I can think of recently that I wouldn't necessarily call influential is maybe Rihanna.

She's been helping to change the landscape of radio ever since GGGB. Taylor Swift is very successful, nobody can touch her right now commercially. But musically, is she really changing the tides and setting the trends? She's making straight-forward pop music with Max Martin, how many artists have done that already?
