Team, XO, and How You Get The Girl!! Not too crazy on Out Of The Woods. Granted, the hook is catchy, but it's actually one of my least favourites on 1989. Again against the majority on here, it seems .p

much love to everyone who's been checking this out! :) Team, XO, and How You Get The Girl!! Not too crazy on Out Of The Woods. Granted, the hook is catchy, but it's actually one of my least favourites on 1989. Again against the majority on here, it seems .p you and your craaazy taste when it comes to 1989 ;) if it's not too much trouble, I'd be curious to see your ranking of the tracks. if I had to do a subjective list of how I feel about each song at this moment in time, it would probably look like: 1.) "Style" 2.) "Blank Space" 3.) "How You Get The Girl" --- gap --- 4.) "Shake It Off" 5.) "New Romantics" 6.) "I Wish You Would" 7.) "Clean" 8.) "All You Had To Do Was Stay" 9.) "Out Of The Woods" --- gap --- 10.) "Wildest Dreams" 11.) "Welcome To New York" 12.) "Bad Blood" ---big gap, I almost always skip these--- 13.) "This Love" 14.) "You Are In Love" 15.) "Wonderland" 16.) "I Know Places"

I like eveything from the last two batches, even though "Dark Horse" and "Animals" have burned on me. Big YES to "XO" though. I adore it. I agree that the video fits the song well. Looking forward to the top 20!

20.) "MAPS" | Maroon 5Points: 197 Debut: 06/22/2014 Run: *1* - 4 – 10 – 8 – 11 – 10 – 18 – OUT – 18 – 23 – OUT – 26 – 15 – OUT
Maroon 5's last lead single, "Payphone", ended up at No. 4 on the Paulboard Year-End Countdown of 2012 (the highest year-end ranking that an all-male act has ever achieved); fittingly, "Maps" didn't perform quite as well, since I don't think it's quite as strong. I clearly haven't minded their "poppier transition" phase that supposedly started with "Moves Like Jagger" and really hit full stride on Overexposed; granted, I never really noticed THAT dramatic of a shift from the type of music they've been making since their second album, but maybe my ears just aren't that discerning. I hope upcoming single "Sugar" continues their string of hits and I'd love to see V go at least four singles deep ("New Love" FTW!)19.) "GHOST" | Ella HendersonPoints: 198 Debut: 07/13/2014 Run: *1* - 1 – 8 – 27 – 7 – 8 – OUT – 29 – OUT – 5 – 17 – OUT – 17 – 23 – OUT
"Ghost" first came to my attention when I noticed its domination on the UK Top 40, so I decided to check out what all the overseas hype was about, and this song's appeal became instantly clear. Unfortunately, it still hasn't taken off in such a big way in the US, but I'm thankful that it's at least become a minor hit here, and its current iTunes performance gives me hope that there's still some steam left. I hadn't really noticed until a friend brought it to my attention, but this song features a ton of religious themes and imagery, which are rarely found in songs that I love this much.18.) "BARTENDER" | Lady AntebellumPoints: 199 Debut: 06/15/2014 Run: *1* - 4 – 3 – 13 – OUT – 18 – 3 – 10 – OUT – 11 – OUT – 17 - [OUT]
This past June, I graduated from my Counseling Psychology program, and several of my relatives were kind enough to fly out to California to attend the ceremony; consequently, "Bartender" served as my "Fuck, I'mma need a drink (or two or more) to deal with family" anthem. Lady Antebellum have a pretty respectable Paulboard history, having previously appeared on the 2010 ("Lookin' For A Good Time", No. 33) and 2012 ("Dancin' Away With My Heart", No. 29) Year-End Countdowns; however, "Bartender" now marks their best year-end ranking ever.17.) "DEAR FUTURE HUSBAND" | Meghan TrainorPoints: 201 Debut: 09/21/2014 Run: *1* - 2 – 6 – 2 – 12 – OUT – 22 – 9 – 10 – 14 – OUT – [19 – SC]
Now we've arrived at Meghan's fourth and final entry on this year's countdown - not too shabby, considering I only have five songs of hers in my entire iTunes Library, but I definitely plan to pick up her full-length debut next week. Much like "Title", "Dear Future Husband" is all about telling a man that she expects some respect (among other things) if he's going to get anywhere with her, but it's the sound that really captured my attention even more than the lyrics. Hopefully Meghan becomes more than just a two-hit wonder, and I think that either "Title" or this could really do the trick. 16.) "I CHOOSE YOU" | Sara BareillesPoints: 214 Debut: 04/13/2014 Run: *2* - OUT – 10 – 7 – 11 – OUT – 13 – OUT – 19 – 6 – 12 – 13 – OUT – 11 – 23 - [OUT]
After two albums that only produced one Hot 100 hit, "I Choose You" finally broke that pattern by entering the Hot 100 (after "Brave" had earned a Top 30 peak.) This lovely song, plus "Brave" (of course), inspired me to buy my first-ever Sara Bareilles album: The Blessed Unrest. Although the full album is actually a bit hit-or-miss, with a few too many forgettable super-slow moments, there's at least a few other standout tracks ("Eden", "Little Black Dress", "Cassiopeia") that made it feel like a worthwhile purchase anyway. I also LOVE the fact that she included a same-sex couple in the ridiculously adorable real-life-proposal-themed video. #represent

15.) "DEDICATED" | Mariah Carey ft. NasPoints: 250 Debut: 06/01/2014 Run: *2* - 2 – 3 – 3 – 8 – 3 – 15 – 12 – 12 – 16 – 26 – OUT – 20 – OUT – [10 - SC]
Instead of yet another song about being madly in love or hopelessly heartbroken, "Dedicated" instead depicts Mariah reminiscing with her friends and singing along to their favorite old-school tunes. This charming track, along with "#Beautiful", are the only two moments on Mariah's latest album that would belong on a list of her all-time best work. The "oh, baby, you know" hook here is absolutely irresistible, and while even that probably wouldn't have guaranteed her a mainstream hit, "Dedicated" certainly would've been the smartest possible follow-up to "#Beautiful." "Dedicated" isn't Mariah chasing trends, grasping at straws to stay relevant with the young demographic (though I don't believe "#B" was that either); instead, this is just Mariah making some damn good R&B.14.) "TRUMPETS" | Jason Derulo Points: 251 Debut: 01/05/2014 Run: 14 – 15 – 22 – 13 – 10 – 7 – OUT – 5 – OUT – 23 – 6 – 12 – OUT – 12 – OUT - *4* - 9 - OUT
Some people **cough** Surf **cough** apparently found Jason's use of falsetto in "Trumpets" to be highly off-putting, but I actually think this is one of his best singles yet, and it absolutely should've been the follow-up to "Talk Dirty" here in the States ("Wiggle" is cute, but it gets real old real fast.) Jason also answered my prayers by stripping down in pretty much every video he released during the Tattoos/Talk Dirty era, 'cause Lord knows I can't get enough of those abs...and arms...and chest...**deep breaths**. I still don't understand which Katy Perry song he's referring to, though...13.) "LOVE ME HARDER" | Ariana Grande ft. The WeekndPoints: 257 Debut: 08/31/2014 Run: *3* - 7 – 11 – 6 – OUT – 3 – 11 – 6 – 9 – 3 – OUT – 14 – OUT – 11 - [OUT]
Ariana Grande was absolutely, hands-down my favorite new artist of 2013. She slayed my soul with the late-90's/early-00's R&B throwback sound of "The Way" (the No. 1 Paulboard hit of 2013), and her debut album followed suit. In fact, a grand total of EIGHT tracks from Yours Truly ended up on the Paulboard Top 50 of 2013. Needless to say, anticipation was high for her follow-up album, and while "Problem" did not disappoint, I was sad to discover that she almost completely abandoned the R&B throwback + Motown sounds of her debut album. Consequently, "only" three tracks from My Everything appear on this year's countdown, including "Love Me Harder", the album's third official single (not counting "Bang Bang".) This is definitely one of the album's standouts, and an encouraging sign that Ariana can experiment with new sounds and still come up with something absolutely fantastic.12.) "POMPEII" | BastillePoints: 261 Debut: 12/22/2013 Run: [22 – 2] – 2 – 6 – 8 – 11 – 9 – 29 – 13 – 2 – 25 - *1* - 9 – 18 – 9 – OUT – [30 - SC]
The norm on my weekly chart is for songs to debut at No. 1, or occasionally climb to the top in their second week; "Pompeii", however, had an exceptionally long road to the top, reaching the No. 1 spot in its 12th week. This tied it with Lady Gaga's "Telephone" for second-longest-journey to No. 1 in Paulboard Top 30 history (the record holder is Carly Rae Jepsen's "Tiny Little Bows", which hit No. 1 in its 16th week due to a random resurgence in my interest last summer.) "Of The Night", another noteworthy Bastille track that I've seen on several other year-end countdowns, had a decent Paulboard run and would've charted somewhere in the 60's if my list went that low.11.) "BREAK FREE" | Ariana Grande ft. ZeddPoints: 261 Debut: 07/06/2014 Run: *1* - 4 – 6 – 17 – 15 – 5 – 4 – 25 – 4 – 25 – 21 – 30 – OUT - 28 – OUT – 30 – OUT – 24 – 28 – 15 – 15 - [OUT]
Although obviously catchy on first listen, "Break Free" initially struck me as being much too basic for Ariana. I'd fallen madly in love with her R&B-infused debut album, and suddenly she was dropping this generic pop/dance number produced by well-known (and quite cute) electro/house DJ Zedd. Despite these initial reservations, "Break Free" somehow just didn't get old for me and managed to linger on the Paulboard Top 30 for twelve consecutive weeks following its No. 1 debut (before leaving and re-entering several more times, as songs generally do on my weekly chart.) I still wish that My Everything had a bit more in common with Yours Truly than it does, but there's still plenty to appreciate about this new side of Ariana too.

10.) "CRYSTALLIZE" | Kylie MinoguePoints: 261 Debut: 06/01/2014 Run: *1* - 4 – 2 – 6 – 1 – 6 – 6 – 4 – OUT – 22 – OUT – 25 – 12 – 26 – 30 – OUT – 28 – OUT – [13 - SC]
Recorded during the Kiss Me Once sessions, but bizarrely excluded from the final tracklist, "Crystallize" was later released as a charity single for the "One Note Against Cancer" campaign. I didn't actually bid on any of the song's notes as a part of said campaign (shame on me, I know), but when the song became available to the public at large, I was instantly, absolutely mesmerized. Although I'm glad that this song was able to help promote a very worthy cause, I can't believe that anyone deemed it unworthy of inclusion on Kiss Me Once; the hook is more infectious than 80% of that album (and clearly I like Kiss Me Once, so this is saying a lot.) The accompanying music video, very simple and clearly low-budget, serves as a perfect example of why you don't need a massive endorsement-fueled budget to produce a fitting, captivating clip. Lord knows I can relate to that girl, shakin' my ass around my room like a damn mess to the sound of some killer Kylie tunes...and wouldn't it be great if a bunch of fit male backup dancers suddenly appeared to accompany me?09.) "BLANK SPACE" | Taylor SwiftPoints: 273 Debut: 10/26/2014 Run: 3 – 2 – 5 – 2 – 10 – *1* - 2 – 6 – 3 – 3 – [5 - 8 - SC]
While 1989's lead single, "Shake It Off", was all about simply ignoring what the h8ers say, its follow-up, "Blank Space", takes a very different approach to handling some of the criticisms frequently thrown in Tay's direction ("All she writes about are her exes!” “She only dates guys so she can write more hits!” “She can't keep a man for more than 30 minutes!", etc.) In "Blank Space", not only does Tay embody that type of girl, she takes it to the EXTREME: completely-bat-shit-crazy-gf extreme, and the results are absolutely brilliant. Clearly Tay isn't afraid to parody herself, which I definitely appreciate, and this song's hilarious video makes that point even more abundantly clear. Now, the really sick part is that I wouldn't mind being that type of girl/guy (well, sometimes, anyway...) ;)
"I get drunk on jealousy, but you'll come back each time you leave, 'cause darling I'm a nightmare, dressed like a daydream..."

Well, I'm not defending Calvin for doing that (regarding the TCA blocked performance), but the only reason I could find is that Rita did something against him, so he didn't want her to perform it. Also, it's true that the rest of the songs that both of them make for her album, which are three, aren't going to be there, but it's not confirmed that he already 'gave away' them. ha, I figured I'd be in trouble with you for saying anything against King Calvin ;) I just feel like, even if she was a "bad girlfriend" or whatever, it's unfortunate that he took it out on her professionally. of course, he's certainly not the first ex- to do something like that. Not really. I'm not one of those fans that can't tolerate different opinions regarding my favourite artists. As a consequence, I agree with you that this wasn't the way to do it, although there should have happened something, I guess. Calvin aside, many many thanks for commenting on all the stuff you'd missed! I really appreciate you taking the time to check all that out. :) You're welcome and I'm here again commenting on the stuff I missed
So good to see "Out of the Woods", "Team", "XO", "Fireproof" (Another tolerable song from them), "How You Get the Girl", "Ghost" (Yay for it making into the Top 20 on your chart), "I Choose You", "Love Me Harder", "Pompeii", "Break Free", "Crystallize" and "Blank Space" so far. Oh! And I couldn't avoid this part. 2. Bad Blood 10. Welcome To New York 14. Wildest Dreams 15. Style How on earth "Bad Blood" and "Welcome to New York" are above "Wildest Dreams" and Style"? And this one because of the bold part. how 'bout us three current/former Psych students have ourselves a 3-some, and then we can do all kinds of processing afterwards? Anyway, back on topic, looking forward to the rest.

Blank Space <3333
How on earth "Bad Blood" and "Welcome to New York" are above "Wildest Dreams" and Style"? Sorry, Juan; not amongst my favourite on 1989 "Welcome To New York" would rank lower if I did another ranking now tbh; my rankings sometimes change.

08.) "PROBLEM" | Ariana Grande ft. Iggy AzaleaPoints: 278 Debut: 05/04/2014 Run: *1* - 2 – 3 – 11 – OUT – 13 – 8 – OUT – 9 – 4 – 14 – OUT – 25 – OUT – 6 – 30 – OUT – 26 – OUT – 4 – [OUT]
Although it was a MASSIVE Paulboard success, the Yours Truly era didn't do quite as impressively on Billboard, only spawning a single Top 10 hit and one additional Top 40 hit, the latter of which had zero longevity. Ariana's highly-underwhelming track record on the Hot 100 would change with the debut of "Problem": a multi-week No. 2 smash and one of the signature songs of 2014. This song's instant appeal is undeniable, and I'm very thankful that this gem helped the public finally notice how much Ariana has to offer. As I've mentioned it my comments on Ari's other 2014 entries, I was pretty disappointed when I discovered that "Problem" actually isn't at all representative of the sound of most of her second album, since it's certainly my favorite of that bunch. Hopefully her next album will feature a bit more "Problem" (mixed with some "Love Me Harder"-esque moments), and a bit less..."Hands On Me." 07.) "RUDE" | MAGIC!Points: 281 Debut: 01/26/2014 Run: *1* - 6 – 12 – 11 – OUT – 5 – 4 – 4 – 17 – 20 – OUT – 17 – OUT – 30 – OUT – 24 – OUT – 13 – 12 – OUT – 10 – OUT – 28 - OUT The only men to dent the Top 10 on this countdown, Canadian pop/rock/reggae band MAGIC! stormed the globe last year with breakthrough smash "Rude." I might be mis-remembering this, but I believe this charming tune first came to my attention when I saw it on Lozzy's personal chart, and it only took one listen for me to get hooked on that simple, but incredibly catchy, chorus. Although I can't relate to the story described throughout this song (like I'll ever be asking any dad for his daughter's hand in marriage, LOLz), the message in the hook is still so relatable; I mean, who HASN'T encountered someone being pointlessly, excessively rude? "Why you gotta be so rude? Don't you know I'm human too?" could just as easily be a part of a gay-rights anthem. Although the original version of "Rude" is definitely my clear favorite, the Zedd Remix is worth checking out too - this song translates surprisingly well into a high-energy dance track.

well...are "cookies" meant to be a euphemism? kinda like how your Kween Riri talks about that cake-cake-cake-cake-cake-cake-cake-cake-cake-cake? if so, then yes. yes there will be. if you meant actual sweet-'n-delicious baked goods...well...whatever it takes to get you off, babe. No, I really meant "actual sweet-'n-delicious baked goods"
Problem and Rude! I can't stand the latter now, though; such a high burn rate But I have to agree that the Zedd remix is flawless! <33

Blank Space is amazing!!! Problem is amazing, along with the rest of Ariana's singles (and album tracks for that matter!!!) <33333333333333 Rude was good at first, but the burn rate was so high, and I can't stand it now... (lol, I basically just copied what hitseeker. said!)

Yes at your #8 and no at your #7. However, you made a shoutout to the Zedd remix for the latter. That's better!

xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo to everyone reading and/or commenting! ...but LOL @ everyone being sick to death of "Rude"! I guess its massive success/overexposure really worked against it. granted, even I didn't play it much during the second half of 2014 (it charted for 14 non-consecutive weeks between Jan - June, and then only appeared twice more after that)...but when I come back to it now, after giving it some space, I can still hear why I fell in love with it. maybe in a year or so you'll all be able to think of it more highly again? ;)

06.) "STYLE" | Taylor SwiftPoints: 286 Debut: 10/26/2014 Run: 2 - *1* - 1 – 1 – 9 – 2 – 4 – 2 – 1 – 1 – [4 - 6 - SC]
As I mentioned in my comments on "Out Of The Woods", 1989 wasn't preceded by a series of iTunes Countdown Singles, as had been the case with Fearless, Speak Now, and Red. Although we were only able to hear a mere two tracks in full ahead of the album's release (not counting lead single "Shake It Off"), Tay whetted our appetites in different ways, such as publishing some lyrics from nearly (or was it every?) song, and featuring never-before-heard songs in high profile commercials. "How You Get The Girl" was first delivered to our ears via a Diet Coke ad, and "Style" (which had been discussed in Tay's Rolling Stone interview) provided the soundtrack to her Target promo. Just like HYGTG, it only took 30-or-so seconds of audio to recognize that "Style" would be absolutely brilliant. The subject matter may be fairly basic, but that melody slays lives in ways that even few other Taylor songs could (and Lord knows I love lots of Taylor.) "Style" has enjoyed the second-longest stay at No. 1 in Paulboard history, with five non-consecutive weeks on top (beaten only by Rihanna's six non-consecutive weeks with "We Found Love.") If this ends up becoming another "22" in terms of chart performance, I will officially, permanently lose all faith in humanity (just like how I've lost any faith in hitseeker...)05.) "BIRTHDAY" | Katy PerryPoints: 301 Debut: 10/27/2013 Run: [4 – 4 – OUT – 22 – 10 – OUT] – 27 – OUT – 21 – 3 – 3 – 14 – OUT – 10 - *2* - 15 – 7 – 9 – 30 – 15 – OUT – 29 – OUT – 17 – 9 – 7 – OUT – 22 - OUT - 17 - OUT
Speaking of Tay's "22", now we have another song that seemed like a guaranteed smash (at least to me), the perfect choice at the perfect time, that somehow under-performed quite significantly: Katy Perry's "Birthday." "Unconditionally" taught us that Katy's Midas touch from the Teenage Dream era was a thing of the past, but it was easy to attribute that song's lackluster chart performance to the general public's lack of interest in super-slow Katy singles (who can forget poor "Thinking Of You"?) "Birthday", on the other hand, seemed like the perfect paint-by-numbers Katy Perry silly uptempo single that was guaranteed a Top 10 (if not Top 5) placement; shockingly, at least to me, it turned out that the public actually isn't all that interested in goofy, playful, upbeat Katy anymore either, which was further evidenced by the even worse performance of fifth single "This Is How We Do." Chart success (or lack thereof) aside, I clearly adore this song, and I think it's a prime example of Katy doing what Katy does best. Killer hook, killer production, deliberately ridiculous sexual innuendo all over the place...I still don't get how people didn't eat this thing up! I guess Katy’s big balloons are just too much to handle...

04.) "INTO THE BLUE" | Kylie MinoguePoints: 312 Debut: 01/26/2014 Run: *1* - 1 – 9 – 7 – 3 – 8 – 15 – 1 – 5 – OUT – 21 – OUT – 27 – OUT – 20 – OUT – 13 – OUT – 15 – OUT – 7 - OUT
The lead single from Kylie's last proper studio album, "All The Lovers", became the No. 1 Paulboard hit of 2010. Although "Into The Blue", the first release off Kiss Me Once, didn't reach quite the same level of Paulboard success (or official international chart success, for that matter), it's still undoubtedly one of my favorite songs and biggest hits of 2014. For some reason, the official video seems to focus on a very generic romance between Kylie and some guy she meets at a party; however, this song has always struck me as an anthem of independence and personal strength, which is a big part of what made me fall so hard for it (apart from the fact that it's just catchy and sounds a bit like "All The Lovers.")
"when I got my back up against the wall, don't need no one to rescue me, 'cause I ain't waitin' up for no miracle, yeah tonight I'm running free, into the blue..."03.) "SHAKE IT OFF" | Taylor SwiftPoints: 340 Debut: 08/24/2014 Run:*1* - 7 – 4 – 9 – 3 – 1 – 13 – OUT - 2 – 8 – 9 – 3 – 8 – 22 – 16 – OUT – 19 – OUT – [24 - OUT]
You know Taylor just HAD to deliver with this one if she was gonna start stealin' song titles from my dearly-beloved Mariah Carey. I was actually on a bus during Taylor's Yahoo! Live Steam, and even though it absolutely devoured my limited data plan, I simply couldn't miss out on the premiere of this highly-anticipated, much-hyped pure-pop lead single (and album title announcement, of course.) Although "Shake It Off" definitely came across as very repetitive on first listen, there was no denying that the chorus could bury itself in your brain real quick. Not too surprisingly, this jam became a global smash and perfectly ushered in the the 1989 era. Thanks to "Shake It Off", Taylor maintains her streak of landing a song inside the Paulboard Year-End Countdown Top 5, which she's done since its inception in 2010: "Mine" (No. 3, 2010), "Ours" (No. 1, 2011), "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" (No. 5, 2012), "22" (No. 2, 2013), "Shake It Off" (No. 3, 2014.)

thank you ThAnK yOu THANK YOU to anyone and everyone who's been reading/commenting/lurking/whatevs :) I'll be wrapping this up later today! Style and Shake It Off!!! <3 Never liked Birthday, but surprisingly I like Sugar. Don't know why. well...I know I'm in the minority when it comes to "Birthday", so I didn't expect to see it gettin' much love from anyone else ;) I actually have a hard time hearing the "Sugar" comparisons, but I've seen those two mentioned together a lot around here. I can kiiiind of hear it during the choruses, but "Birthday" is just so much more uptempo, they still feel like really different songs to me. I enjoy them both, though!
