02.) "FEELS SO GOOD" | Kylie Minogue
Points: 408
Debut: 03/23/2014
Run: *1* - 2 – 3 – 4 – 11 – 5 – 15 – OUT - 5 – 8 – 16 – 18 – 21 – OUT – 5 – 8 – 20 – OUT – 16 – OUT – 8 – 26 – 16 – 4 - OUT - [11 - SC]
We've seen a lot of Kylie's Kiss Me Once album on this countdown, but "Feels So Good" is the track that immediately stood out as my clear favorite when I first got ahold of that album. It seemed to me like the most truly "Kylie" of everything on the album, so I was really shocked to discover that it's actually a very faithful cover of a song called "Indiana" by Tom Aspaul (well...faithful apart from the fact that Kylie changed the song's title.) The way Kylie coo's the chorus is simply divine: "And it feeels soo gooood, when you're heeere, we are neeaar tooo loooooove..." I strongly encourage you to check it out if you've never heard it before, because there's no way that my description could possibly do this song justice. By landing in the runner-up spot on the Paulboard Top 50 of 2014, "Feels So Good" earns the honor of being the highest-charting album track/non-single ever on my year-end countdowns. Previously, the highest position that a non-single achieved was No. 6, held by Ariana Grande's "Honeymoon Avenue" in 2013. Although my weekly Top 30 is based strictly on my own play counts, so singles non-singles have an equal opportunity to perform well, official singles tend to do a bit better due to all the additional exposure they receive (watching the video, following them on official charts), which keeps them fresh in my mind; consequently, the fact that "Feels So Good" managed to perform this well without any of that extra stuff is a true testament to its perfection.
01.) "FOLLOW YOUR ARROW" | Kacey Musgraves
Points: 498
Debut: 02/09/2014
Run:*1* - 2 - 1 - 13 – 23 – 6 – OUT – 26 – 16 – 14 – OUT – 3 – 5 – 3 – 12 – 6 – 15 – OUT – 7 – OUT – 19 – 14 – 10 – OUT – 2 – 2 – OUT – 23 – 2 – 21 – [8 - OUT - 8 - SC]
Kacey Musgraves first came to my attention when several of her tracks appeared on a friend's 2013 countdown. After hearing short snippets of several Kacey songs, I decided to download a few in full: "Merry Go 'Round", "Silver Lining", and "Dandelion." After listening through them all several times, I liked them well enough, but I didn't get really hooked on any of them. A few weeks later, I decided to check out one more Kacey tune after reading that she'd made a gay-friendly country song: "Follow Your Arrow." I was instantly hooked, and this fantastic song went on to become my anthem of 2014. Apart from the novelty of a gay-friendly, pot-friendly, calling-out-religious-folks-for-being-raging-hypocrites country song, this song hit me for plenty of personal reasons too. 2014 was definitely a transitional year for me, since I wrapped up my first-ever mental health counseling internship and earned my MA in Counseling Psychology...and realized that it's not what I actually want to do for the rest of my life. As I continue to wade through this sense of uncertainty and aimlessness, I always feel reassured by Kacey's words to "just follow your arrow wherever it points..."
