I'd say they make sense, if you consider them as "weeks on" and not "charts on".

A lot of extras this week, 12 in all, and IMO handled better than usual; no clumping (no two extras are back to back), and a balance between potential future hits, older songs, and recent dropoffs. The Two for One feature reappears for the first time in a while.

More movement than usual, though not as dramatic as we've sometimes seen post-holiday. Adding two extra weeks to each song's previous placement gives Maroon 5 a total of 21 weeks at #1 since October 2011 (there would probably be one and conceivably two less without the 2014-15 holiday freeze.) That was accomplished with five different songs, and Taylor Swift now matches that number of chart toppers (she's still two #1's behind M5 overall.)

Not as much movement as the 22 spot drop by Selena Gomez last year this week, but still an interesting occurrence as five songs tied for the second biggest jumper this week (9 spots). One song jumps 10 spots, with one dropping 11 spots. Once again, an "old school" chart to start the year off.

Six debuts this week. I always look forward to the first countdown of every year because of the fresh new music that comes onto the chart. It looks like a good chart week with everything spaced out pretty well with the extras and all. As expected Taylor has #1, but after her, it's anybody's guess who will get there.

Same here. I like all the debuts and the big movements. Kind of reminds you of the charts of old.  :)

I'd say the biggest surprise is seeing "Beg For It" hitting the top 10 here. It peaked at #12 on Mediabase. It missed the top 10 on Billboard's chart, too. I guess someone really wanted it to make it.

Nice fresh-sounding show this week. We got a La La song and a La La La song, back-to-back
Charli XCX, and a couple of "dance" songs. Ryan said that it was the most new entries since
August 2013. (That was the weekend of Aug. 3 when there were 7 new songs.) Actually last year
the first chart in January 2014 only had 4 debuts, and the year before it was 7.

I agree that it makes sense to include the frozen weeks. Casey always did that too on American Top 40, AT10 and AT20. Billboard has always done it.

Casey didn't always do that. I just listened to a January 1977 countdown, after Billboard first froze the holiday week, and he treated the frozen week as if it didn't exist.

Correction: Casey had been doing it at least since 1998 when AT40 started up again. And I know AT40 did it going from 1989 to at least 1992.

That sounds about right. I think for the majority of the Casey's Top 40 years, the frozen weeks weren't counted. I think this is, largely, because R&R didn't publish issues the last two weeks of the year. Their "weeks on" column carried over between published issues, disregarding the skip weeks. I noted this back in 2004 when Ryan told us that 3 Doors Down's "Here Without You" tied the 43 week longevity record previously held by Blues Traveler's "Run-Around" from 1995 into 1996. That run would, actually, have been 45 weeks had the frozen weeks been counted. I suppose it was "officially" in the books as 43 weeks.
