This week is an unusual one at country radio in that there are four high-profile singles from the four major Music Row labels going for adds, and three of those singles are from female artists at different stages of their careers. The varied reactions to the singles here at Pulse made me think it might be fun to forecast first-week adds. Which of these singles do you see racking up the most first-week adds? Feel free to also guess how many first week Mediabase adds any or all of these singles will receive. The poll will lock at noon Eastern time tomorrow. Adds reports are due at 3pm Eastern tomorrow, though we may have to wait until 5-6pm Eastern to find out from Country Aircheck who nabbed the most-added song for the week.
Frankie Ballard (Warner Brothers Nashville) is coming off two consecutive #1 hits (the gold-certified "Helluva Life" and the gold-certified "Sunshine & Whiskey," which sold comparably if not a bit better than its predecessor during its chart run), so he has the best radio track record in the past year out of the artists going for adds. However, his album sales are awful, and despite a Jimmy Kimmel Live performance this week, he is far from a recognized name. Here's the thread for the single in the Country forum for anyone looking to gauge reaction to the single choice of "Young & Crazy." And here is the song itself:
Mickey Guyton (Capitol Nashville) has been buzzed about ever since she received a standing ovation from a Ryman Auditorium-full of radio programmers in 2013 during UMG Nashville's Country Radio Seminar showcase event for her performance of "Better Than You Left Me." For whatever reason, it has taken nearly two years for her label to actually launch her debut single at radio. She did release the Unbreakable EP on 3 March 2014, in conjunction with her performance at the first ever US iTunes Festival in Austin, and has been on a radio tour for the past three or four months. She debuted at the Opry last night, her video for her single "Better Than You Left Me" will be premiered tomorrow, and she has been featured on a number of "Artists to Watch" lists coming into 2015. Here is the link to the thread for her single in the Country forum. And here is the song itself:
Miranda Lambert (RCA Nashville) is the CMA/ACM standard-bearer for quality mainstream country music, and one of only two A-list females whom country radio has proven willing to take to the top-10 on a regular basis over the past few years. Her album Platinum, which has sold around 605K copies since its 3 June 2014 release, featured prominently on many of 2014's year-end best albums list, and she is up for four Grammys this year. Her lead single "Automatic" limped to a Mediabase #1/Billboard #3 peak in June and has sold around 600K copies, and then her "Somethin' Bad" duet with Carrie Underwood peaked at #7 Billboard/#8 Mediabase in the middle of October despite sales closing in on 900K copies and a very popular video. So there has been a lengthy gap in between singles for Miranda. "Little Red Wagon" picked up twenty-one adds last week. Miranda performed "Little Red Wagon" on ABC's CMA Festival: Country's Night to Rock special (which aired in August) and on CBS' Fashion Rocks in early September. Here is the discussion thread for Miranda's single in the Country forum. And here is the song itself:
Reba (Nash Icons/Valory Music Company) is the beloved legend of the bunch, and making her much-publicized return to country radio after an absence of nearly four years. Her age and gender may work against her at country radio, not that either should. However, her new single, "Going Out Like That" is guaranteed adds by the Cumulus block (which numbers around seventeen stations out of 149, I believe?), thanks to Reba's Nash Icons label being a joint venture between Cumulus and Big Machine Label Group. Her single reached #1 on the iTunes country chart the day of its release (#35 all-genre), but has dropped to #132 all-genre (#24 country) as of today. Here is the discussion thread for Reba's single in the Country forum. And here is the song itself (the only YouTube stream that I could find altered the pitch of Reba's voice, so I went with Spotify):
