So with the remix coming Friday, will the airplay be counted as one song? What about the sales?

Is this for real?? Well, not many people could pull this off as 1st single, but if anyone can it's Rihanna. It's still crap but that won't be an issue.

Why isn't this on Spotify and YouTube yet? Streaming is important these days, you know.

See, today's monstrous update is more indicative of radio's early interest!
Very long, competitive road to travel, but I hope this ends up with something in the way of a favorable run. I definitely want big name artists to feel encouraged to take musical risks.

I'm surprised by the overwhelmingly negative reaction here. Love everything about this song except the lead vocals Ye needs to stop singing period and Rihanna needs to stop straining her voice

See, today's monstrous update is more indicative of radio's early interest! That's always the case with new singles by big artists who are core to the format. I don't think anyone expected otherwise.

So far, literally everything is looking good for this song except for the reactions on pulse (which I put very little stock in).

Was referring to the Billboard comment that "hourly promo airplay from iHeartRadio" = radio programmers are showing early interest in the song. There are still all kinds of inflating factors at play, but the airplay the song received yesterday was more autonomous and thus more consistent with Billboard's thesis.

I don't follow Rihanna's iTunes performance really, so maybe this isn't indicative of anything, but it seems less than ideal for a star of her caliber.

The initial response to this on Pulse and on the blogs has been mixed. Initial iTunes performance doesn't look good either. It's only been out for a day so there's no need to get dramatic about it, but so far the only thing it has going for it out the gate would be the radio spins, not that that wasn't expected anyway.
I see this going top 20 guaranteed, then quietly dying out.

I don't follow Rihanna's iTunes performance really, so maybe this isn't indicative of anything, but it seems less than ideal for a star of her caliber. Diamonds started out at #4 and dropped to the bottom of the top 10 but eventually rebounded. It didn't hit #1 on iTunes until almost 2 months after its release. www.itunescharts.net/us/artists/music/rihanna/songs/diamonds/We Found Love topped out at #2 at first, and it also fell to the bottom half of the top 10. It hit #1 on iTunes about a month after its release. www.itunescharts.net/us/artists/music/rihanna/songs/we-found-love-feat-calvin-harris/FourFiveSeconds' #2 peak is about in line with what previous Rihanna singles have done. While it is falling on iTunes, it isn't sinking like a rock, its been getting some green and white updates on kworb mixed in with the red.

So what is this DJ Mustard remix that's being rush released? Nothing is being rush released. Rih is just being smart realizing they'll have to revamp the song a bit for those Urban/Rhythmic spins. And as far as iTunes goes, this is actually holding up/doing better than both Diamonds and WFL in their initial rise. But of course people will still insist that it's underperforming so I'm just gonna sit back and let it prove itself. :)

So what is this DJ Mustard remix that's being rush released? I imagine it was something that was already planned.

I agree, it's Rihanna, radio loves her, it will be very weird if radio rejects a brand new song after only a couple of days. If there's a bad reaction it'll be obvious if slow down a lot near top 20, or even top 15

There have been numerous singles that have had a massive first week and then stalled in the coming weeks. It's way too early to know the fate of this song but we should know by week 4 the latest. This is definitely my least favorite lead single of hers.

We don't have any information to state that the DJ Mustard remix is a rush release. As someone has said above, it may have been planned all along because the song is not really Urban friendly and I don't think Rihanna wants to alienate her Urban fanbase.
As for this song's performance on iTunes, Rihanna has never been that type of singer who has a #1 iTunes single in a matter of minutes or hours or who sells 500-600k first week like Taylor or Katy. She's always been more of a consistent digital seller. WFL and Diamonds did not even do 150k first week and went on to sell several million copies. Granted, the videos were instrumental on those numbers, so I'm also hoping FFS's video helps the song digitally. Anyway, 2-year "hiatus" notwithstanding, I wouldn't say that the performance in the US, or on the rest of the world for that matter, is a big of an underperformance as it may seem. It has hit #1 in 40+ countries and it remains in the Top5 in the US. Diamonds did not hit #1 on its first day, for example.
But yes, let's wait a couple of weeks and see. Honestly, this can go all the way and become one hell of a hit or fizzle out before it gets there. Obviously rooting for the former :)
ETA: The DJ Mustard remix drops this Friday, @touch

This is having a good run thus far but I can't help but wonder how it would be if she came back with a We Found Love 2015 undeniable monster hit. The demand for new Rih music is at an all-time high and she would be breaking records right now if the song was more 'safe'. Still like it a lot though.

Gran Gran Dolly's screams from hell during Kanye's part ruin the song. I mean...OMG. Early nomination for Post of the Year or Funniest Post. WTF?!

Just listened to this for the first time and at first I thought it was a joke or a demo. Not here for this, but I wish her well.

Anyway this is really terrible isn't it? An ego bath for all involved and a totally forgettable attempt at credibility.
Rihanna can do SO much better. But it will obviously not be the only thing released before the album so there is still hope.

I heard this song on the radio today. Well, it is what it is. The melody in a few places isn't bad but the singing is just awful. I originally thought that Rihanna was a terrible singer but I've come around to her unique vocals over the past few years and I've actually enjoyed a few of her songs. However, her singing on this one is just hard to get through. I get they were going for little production on this but it just doesn't work with her voice. No comment on Kanye's part. And did I hear a baby singing or something really weird about 1/2 through the song. Whatever it is it's not artistic but cringe worthy.
