Pon De Replay is a great song. SMASH to this day, IMO.

If It's Loving That You Want was the first, then I got used to Pon DE Replay after it was done.

^"If It's Loving That You Want" is a VERY GOOD song. Rihanna's old music is so amazing when I listen to it.

We're not sold on it at my station... kind of sounds like a mess, so we decided to put it up against our most polarizing new song... "She Keeps Me Up" by Nickelback in our Fresh Tracks Battle.
And somehow Nickelback won in a landslide.
It's a tough song to embrace on first listen. So bad that people would rather hear NICKELBACK.

Lol, I really don't think this is "garbage" or "awful" by any means. The melodrama in this thread is absolutely laughable. This song is fine. The lyrics aren't anything special, but her vocals have improved drastically. I love the rawness of this, and the fact that she threw out the biggest curveball we've seen any pop star give the GP in who-knows-how-long with an entirely acoustic song that's already making a splash is, in my opinion, awesome. My only issue with this song is that it sounds like a worktape. Everything about it sounds very preliminary to the typical recording process -- writing, worktape, demo, recording. Still, though, I give Rihanna a ton of credit for being bold and releasing this as a returning lead single. Good vocals, nice inclusion from Kanye West, confusing inclusion with Sir Paul McCartney, cool acoustic arrangement that'll certainly stick out on CHR/Pop radio (understatement, lol), but nothing amazing by any means. I understand not liking it at all, but "garbage," "absolutely terrible," "awful," etc.? Not when compared to other stuff that's been released by a lot of other Pop stars as of late.
Woo, unpopular opinion!

Is it weird if I could still see them winning that even with this song being better received...because, well, Canada? Wondering if their reputation is maybe nowhere near as abysmal up in the Great White North as it is down here. I don't have any issues with this song either TBQH. It just has that vibe about it where it's fun to listen to. Maybe it's a "so bad that it's f**king amazing" thing going on, IDK, but I ain't rejecting it.

Oh, hell no, don't you come for her best song like that. Haha, well I still appreciate it and the use of the sample but it has not aged well for me at all and now it ranks low amongst my fave singles by her It definitely hasn't aged all that well, but it was the first Rihanna song I properly loved (I was indifferent towards 'PdR' and only liked 'IILTYW'), so it's special to me. And I really don't think she's topped it, especially in terms of singles, lead or otherwise.

SOS was a cute song but that's pretty much it. It stands nowhere near her other monster hits.
Back to this, I have suddenly loved it after experiencing it through headphones. That chorus is catchy as hell.

Is it weird if I could still see them winning that even with this song being better received...because, well, Canada? Wondering if their reputation is maybe nowhere near as abysmal up in the Great White North as it is down here. Canadians tend to hate Canadian artists more because we have government regulations that force us to play them... all Canadian stations have to play at least 35% of their playlist by Canadian artists, so Nickelback has been a go-to artist for more than a decade, so they've worn on us. As for listener demo, we're a CHR station, so we target women 18-35.

She's kept releasing music, but it seems like each album has diminishing returns in both US & Canada in terms of success of the singles? Also, Deborah Cox is coming soon! She hasn't released much new material since 2008, and "Beautiful U R" was actually a good song last time around.

Older CanCon artists still get pushed aside though. I rarely hear Bryan Adams anymore compared to how often I used to whereas Hedley and Mariana's Trench pretty well guaranteed to be played every hour or two.

This song is so ugly sounding, if it weren't for the big names involved it wouldn't be anywhere near radio or the iTunes top. I don't want to be Debbie Downer, but it's just such an ugly sounding track by all means.
Anyways people are free to like it as they want, even if this would spend 10wks at #1 wouldn't change my mind atleast. It's a shame since I'm a Rihanna fan and have been looking forward to the new album, hope this is just some random track unrelated to her album though.

if it weren't for the big names involved it wouldn't be anywhere near radio or the iTunes top On the contrary, I believe if anyone else had released this song, it would have been accepted much more readily. If random, Joe Blow, hipster indie singer/songwriter dude broke onto the scene with a stripped down, passionate song like this, people would be eating it up. And, if Taylor Swift released this joint? Oh my goodness. Top 10 hit on all formats (including country) before she even finished singing it. Expectation is playing a heck of a role with the reaction here...but true artists don't let expectations hold them back, so kudos to Rihanna, Kanye, and Paul. People are acting like this is the first time a simple guitar + vocals tune saw the light of day on pop radio. "More Than Words" by Extreme, "Daughters" by John Mayer, "True" by Ryan Cabrera, "Hey There Delilah" by PWT... "YESTERDAY" BY THE BEATLES. <---hmm... It's funny...many people out there whine about how bland music is these days...how electronic it is...how no one plays instruments anymore...how soulless, mechanical, and artificial it's become...blah, blah, blah. Then a trio of HUGE artists actually has the guts to break it ALL THE WAY DOWN in the most unexpected way...and folks still get salty. Whatever, the song is currently selling well worldwide. So clearly a smack load of people out there appreciate it for what it represents.

I just happen to think this song is pure crap, not because of who sings it or what genre it is, but because to me it is really poorly done. It sounds like two ten year olds shouted into a mic in their garage while someone's little sister played in the background.

That reminds me...the whole "it sounds like a demo" and "it sounds unpolished" thing.
You don't have to like it. But, lots of bands have made livings off of that raw, unproduced sound. It's a conscious, deliberate decision. Not an oversight.
People criticize musicians today for being "overproduced"...and autotune...and being too electronic. This song is none of those things. Intentionally.
I personally think it sounds awesome, and it matches the urgent, desperate, passionate tone of the lyrics.

But none of the songs you listed sound overproduced or auto tuned or too polished. Yet they all manage to sound professional. Which this one, at least in my opinion, does not. And I personally think callout scores are going to eat it alive. But I've been wrong plenty of times before (certainly a lot more than Rihanna has) so I guess we'll see.

Yet they all manage to sound professional. Well, I can't speak for other people, but I don't enjoy music because it sounds professional or unprofessional. I enjoy music that moves me. That's why bands often sell live versions of songs. The imperfections and quirks can actually enhance the emotional connection for many folks. The White Stripes made a career out of sounding like they just stepped out of a garage. And, you could very well be right...depending on who's surveyed, the call out scores could be bad or they could be good. Doesn't change the fact that this song is really connecting with a LOT of people worldwide right now. And, even the people who aren't liking it are talking about it (because it's so unsettling to them). It will make you feel, one way or another. That is the mark of an impactful song.

The song sounds polished to me, or as polished as any song is from this genre of music. I doubt that a lot of people posting in the pop forum are used to that, and hell, it's not an inaccurate assessment to say that it sounds a little rough by pop's standards. People can dislike it for that reason. I personally think it adds to the song, but that's just me.
Now, before we go on the "impactful" tangent... People were talking about and tearing apart 'Not Myself Tonight' for a while but that song didn't make much of any impact for, well, anyone. I mean yeah, it's remembered by people who pay attention to the charts for being a fresh new hell for Christina, but that's not much of an impact. Any impact 'FourFiveSeconds' may have remains to be seen. It hasn't even been a week yet.

I don't think people hate this song because they hate this style of music - well, I'm sure there are some. I figured people hated the song because this isn't what they want from Rihanna. As much as I love acoustic singer/songwriter songs, there are some artists I don't want to hear those from just as much as there are others who I never want to hear a dance/pop song from. Plus, to have a new single from Rihanna for the first time in two years and have it not be an upbeat, super catchy club banger is a bit of a strike against whatever the song happened to be. If this had been a regular album track or even the second or third single rather than the first, it would probably be praised for sounding so different. As it is now, it's standing in the way of having a killer dance bop from Rihanna on the radio.
