Johnny Paycheck - Mr. Hag Told My Story (1981) I've been listening to this album periodically since I rediscovered it around a year ago. I have to say the way I perceive it has changed since Merle died. Made things a lot sadder. It is, however, a great tribute album that I can't recommend enough. Never knew about this album before, but looks interesting. The same year Merle Haggard signed to Epic Records (1981), Johnny Paycheck was charting two singles off the album, I Can't Hold Myself In Line (with Haggard-#41) and Yesterday's News Just Hit Home Today (#57).

I have been listening to Mary Chapin Carpenter's "The Things We Are Made of," and frankly quite disappointing. All the songs sound the same. It's different from MCC of the 90s. There's just no "Shut up and kiss me" or "Twist and Shout" or "He Thinks He'll Keep Her." Mostly mid-tempoes that just go on and on, with quite obscure lyrics.

I listend to it today and totally agree. I did like the lyrics to Hand On My Back but otherwise I would only recommend this album to someone who needed depressing music for a road trip. I'm such the James Taylor fan that I was hoping ”Livingston” was about his brother but no such luck!

I'm such the James Taylor fan that I was hoping ”Livingston” was about his brother but no such luck! Agree. I gave it another a listen but finally gave up. It seems that MCC's muse died after she left Columbia/Sony. Her music is no longer catchy and they just frag on and on and on. I get it that she doesn't want to pander radio. But what's wrong with a melodious tune? What's wrong with a fun tune like "Shut Up and Kiss Me"? And what's wrong with having people wanting to sing along? Does slow non-melodious tunes mean growth? And artistic freedom? Even her ballads these days can't match her earlier ones like "What If We Went to Italy" or "Come On Come On" or "The Moon and St. Christopher." Her best album to date are still the ones when she was with Sony.

I finally got to listen to it today. I agree somewhat that it's not as good as I was hoping, but I did enjoy it. I definitely agree that her best albums were with Sony. I've listened to her first six albums over the last week or so (I was hoping to listen to them all before getting the new one, but I ran out of time after A Place In The World). There is a spark that was there that isn't anymore. I had forgotten how good Hometown Girl was when re-listening. That being said though, there are still a number of things I enjoy about the new album. "Something Tamed Something Wild" is one of my favourite singles out right now. I also really like "The Middle Ages", "Map Of My Heart", "Hand On My Back" and "The Things That We Are Made Of" on first listen. "The Middle Ages" is in some way to me her revisiting the theme of "Stones In The Road" all these years later, from the point of view of someone 20 years older (it's not as good though, I admit).

This is surprising very good! Loving this album though I am not too familiar with Michael Martin Murphy's discography.

agree, Michael Martin Murphey's new one is stunning, really love "Honor Bound," gorgeous words. In this world of broken promises, his song is so needed. Also, like "The End of the Road" and the somehow picturesque "Campfire on the Road." It truly has a "western" element but he doesn't over do it.

Robbie Fulks - Upland Stories (2016) Favorite Tracks This Listen: "Needed," "Never Gone Home", "Katy Kay" A terrific album with some knockout songwriting. Gonna take several listens to grasp this one.

About to listen to: Randy Rogers Band - Nothing Shines Like Neon (2016) My first time listening to these guys. Very enjoyable! I can see myself getting into their back catalog in the not too distant future.

I've been on a Loretta Lynn "Van Lear Rose" kick lately. It is absolute perfection. Never, ever gets old.

Today so far I've listened to: Radney Foster - Del Rio, TX 1959 (1992) Al Scorch - Circle Round the Signs (2016) Aubrie Sellers - New City Blues (2016) The Grascals - And Then There's This... (2016) Keith Whitley - L.A. to Miami (1985) I've been on a Loretta Lynn "Van Lear Rose" kick lately. It is absolute perfection. Never, ever gets old. Absolutely. Love, love that album. "Well Potland, Oregon and sloe gin fizz, if that ain't love then tell me what is..."

Mark Chesnutt-Tradition Lives
Kevin Denney-Somewhere In Between
Been playing these two albums pretty consistently over the past two weeks as they have quickly become my favorite this year. Have to give 1st place to Mark those because he does have more of the Honky-tonk sound I like on his but both are outstanding.

Yes, physical copies are available through a link on his facebook page and digitally through iTunes. It's a really solid album.
