Deftones Dominate Hard Rock Albums & Entire Lumineers Album Lands on Hot Rock Songs Chart
4/20/2016 by Kevin Rutherford
Deftones land first No. 1 on Hard Rock Albums, while the Lumineers chart all 11 songs from "Cleopatra."
With their first album in four years, Deftones achieve a first: a No. 1 on a Billboard rock albums chart. The alt-metal act earns its first No. 1 on the Hard Rock Albums tally (dated April 30), as Gore, its eighth studio album, debuts with 69,000 sold, according to Nielsen Music.
The new record also starts at No. 2 on Top Rock Albums and Alternative Albums (equaling the band's previous best rank on each chart, first set by 2010's Diamond Eyes) and the Billboard 200, where it's the act's highest-ranking title since its 2003 self-titled LP.
Gore grants Deftones their best week of traditional album sales in nearly a decade, when Saturday Night Wrist began with 76,000 (Nov. 18, 2006).
Gore is Deftones' first album since the 2013 death of bassist Chi Cheng, who was involved in a car crash in 2008 and remained semi-comatose until his passing. Before his death, the band used bassist Sergio Vega in his place; Vega has since joined the band as a full-time member.
Earlier this month, Gore lead single "Prayers/Triangles" reached No. 10 on Mainstream Rock Songs, becoming the band's fifth top 10 on the chart, dating to its first, the No. 9-peaking "Change (In the House of Flies)" in 2000.
Above Gore* on Top Rock Albums, Alternative Albums and the Americana-focused Folk Albums, the Lumineers launch at No. 1 with Cleopatra (108,000 copies sold). As previously reported, the set starts atop the all-genre, consumption-based Billboard 200 (125,000 equivalent album units earned).
All 11 songs on Cleopatra chart on Hot Rock Songs, led by first single "Ophelia," which reaches a new peak (8-5). An entire album making the Hot Rock Songs chart is a rare, but attainable, occurrence. Most recently, Panic! at the Disco charted all 11 tracks from its latest album, Death of a Bachelor, although only as many as 10 appeared simultaneously (on the Feb. 6 chart; "Hallelujah" was absent, as it had previously charted for 26 weeks, peaking at No. 3).
Dating to the Hot Rock Songs chart's 2009 inception, four acts prior to the Lumineers have charted entire albums (counting original, not re-release or deluxe versions) on the ranking in the same week. One previously did this year: all seven tracks from David Bowie's Blackstar graced the Jan. 30 chart following the icon's Jan. 10 death.
The other acts: all 11 songs from Fall Out Boy's American Beauty/American Psycho charted on Hot Rock Songs on Feb. 7, 2015; Lorde's Pure Heroine was represented by its full 10-song list on Oct. 9, 2013; and, doubly impressive, Mumford & Sons charted all 12 tracks each from two sets: Wilder Mind (May 23, 2015) and Babel (Oct. 20, 2012). As with the Lumineers, all the albums noted achieved the feat concurrent with chart debuts, as the feat reflects the strong sales and streams that key rock releases can draw in their first weeks of activity.
*Gore is not on the Folk Abums chart, of course.
