www.billboard.com/articles/columns/pop-shop/6480275/lorde-to-return-to-the-studio-within-the-next-month-or-soLorde to Return to the Studio 'Within the Next Month Or So' ARTICLESPOP-SHOPNEWS By Lars Brandle | February 23, 2015 6:08 AM EST Lorde is about to get cracking on her sophomore album. The teenage New Zealand-born phenom will hit the studio in a matter of weeks to begin work on a follow-up to Pure Heroine. The big news didn't come via Lorde's social media accounts, or a press release, but from her producer and collaborator Joel Little, who spilled the beans in an interview for Australia's Triple J radio network. Speaking with Triple J music director Richard Kingsmill, Little said he'd join Lorde (real name Ella Yelich-O'Connor) in the studio to carve out a new slate of recordings. "That's the plan, basically. We're just going to start writing some songs. We haven't got some planned out 'this is what it's going to sound like'... I think we're just going to start writing and when it starts to feel right, we'll know that it's right. It's pretty simple really." How soon? "Really soon. Like within the next month or so we'll be in the studio." Little, who has worked recently with compatriots Broods and Australian artist Daniel Johns, says he doesn't overthink the creative process. "I don't know where the inspiration comes from for stuff. You work and at some point you feel you suck for the first 10 hours and in the last hour in the studio something great happens. You just never know when it's going to come." Little produced every track of Lorde's multi-million selling 2013 album Pure Heroine, including the global hit "Royals," which he also co-wrote. "Royals" topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for nine weeks. A slew of awards followed, including a brace of Grammys and a pair of Billboard Music Awards. Joel co-wrote every song on her debut and produced the entire album, which is why I'm making this. I'm expecting a fall/early winter release for this right now. Oop, silly me. One of the highly anticipated releases of 2016 then.

Really excited for this one. Also intrigued. The success of "Team" + the overall quality of her first album showcased her as the kind of substantive, savvy artist you expect to be around for a while. But the failure of "Tennis Court" and general lack of interest in "Yellow Flicker Beat"/her Hunger Games soundtrack suggests that her *brand* isn't necessarily scorching hot.
Will be interesting to see what she develops in this circumstance

This should be great. I'm just now warming up to her a lot more & going more in depth w/her music.

I was hoping she would work with some other producers to see if she's capable of more than just moody minimalist angst pop

Pure Heroin has aged flawlessly for me. I can't wait for this next album.

I wonder how this next album will do. I think she's a decent writer, but her debut was too samey for me.

A collaboration between Lorde and Disclosure will be interesting to see. They already performed "Royals" together at the BRIT Awards and it was amazing.

This is excellent. I wasn't fully sold on her debut, but her work since then has really made me curious about her next proper project and campaign.

Looking forward to this! I hated "Royals" and "Team"/"Tennis Court" were kind of just there for me, so I essentially skipped her debut era. I later discovered "Ribs" and "Buzzcut Season" which are among the most hauntingly beautiful songs I've come across in a long time. "Magnets" is the highlight on Disclosure's new album. All in all, I'm eager to give her a real chance this time.

I'm anticipating new music from her. The debut took a long time to grow on me because it is definitely a bit monotonous but in the end I've come to love it.

There's an album name according to her Twitter. I'm assuming this is coming in the first half of the year.

What has taken her so long? This era will be interesting; could kind of make or break her since she's still really just known for "Royals" and being in Taylor's squad.

I think it'll be interesting what she does and whether she can break free of her anti-celebrity persona or whether she can side-step it without opposing it.

There are legitimate one-hit-wonders whose first album sold really well despite never getting another hit.

What, you'd classify Lorde as a one-hit wonder? What do you call 'Team' then?

No, I wouldn't. She's had a few hits obviously, but say selena said above that she's mostly only known for Royals, which I wouldn't necessarily disagree with. Being known for one song doesn't necessarily make one a one-hit-wonder - though it could lead to that down the road I suppose.

What, you'd classify Lorde as a one-hit wonder? What do you call 'Team' then? "Team" was totally a hit. But it was a follow-up hit that I don't think has stuck with the public nearly as well as "Royals." It was completely overshadowed (not unlike CRJ and "Good Time" tbh). I'm not trying to say she's in a bad place to launch her next era. But it'll be interesting nonetheless. She's taken a relatively long break after only 2 hits.

"Team" is definitely still largely remembered. In fact, I hear it more often than I do "Royals."

Lorde also has one major thing that someone like Carly didn't: a persona. That alone gives her a lot to work with going into this. She was so young when her debut was released that there's actually an angle to play with the longer than expected wait.

"Team" was a hit but it benefited from the wake "Royals" left behind. It's not like she came out of nowhere with a second hit. Her two remembered songs were back to back and followed by silence, not unlike "Break Your Heart" and "Dynamite" by Taio Cruz. "Tennis Court" flopped. "Yellow Flicker Beat" left little impact. "Magnets" (unjustifiably) flopped. Success this era is definitely not a guarantee unless she comes correct in terms of material. If this flops, she unlikely to have as much of a spotlight on her again. If it does well, she's likely to here to stay... which goes to Gray.'s original point that it's a make or break era.
