I haven't been this disappointed with the general public for not appreciating an amazing artist since Florence and the Machine... SMH. It kills me that visionary female artists are so undervalued. It doesn't matter if she doesn't get monster sales or awards anymore because the work speaks for itself.... but f**k it's so beautiful and really deserves all the success in the world. Sometimes everything lines up perfectly, and sometimes it doesn't even though the material is so clearly there. A shame.

A literal crock of s**t but ANYWAY Lorde took the time to write a handwritten letter and post it on a full-page of the New Zealand Herald. Also her iconic dress caused a stir which has a note written on the back which read: Also the GRAMMYS producer is full of s**t. Him re: why she wasn't asked to perform/perform solo: Yes but let's make sure all of these men get their time in the spotlight. #bitter

I have seen this happen time and time again. Alanis, jewel, Fiona , the list goes on. There is always this phenomenal young female artist who captures the rebellion of a generation and then they throw her away. But the vapid ones remain. I knew it would happen to her

I think I still prefer her debut album actually, though both are great. Melodrama is probably more consistently great, but it has always lacked a standout track or two for me. Not disputing that the GP has trash taste all too often, but Lorde and co. didn't do themselves many favors with this release, either. "Green Light" sounded DOA from the first time I heard it; radio still jumped on it like crazy at first, so the interest and support was there. "Perfect Places" should have been the lead, but they could have salvaged a rough start had they done something when it became obvious "Green Light" wasn't going to hit.
With a few exceptions, I find myself only going back to Melodrama when I listen to the album in its entirety; whereas with Pure Heroine, I can listen to the album in full, or just pluck my favorite tracks that still get me to this day. I don't love anything on Melodrama the way I love "Buzzcut Seasons," "Ribs," or "Glory and Gore."
Still, I think she could have a Lana-esque career where she settles into a strong opening, following, critical acclaim, and just consistently excellent material. I kinda feel like if she really wanted to be a superstar, she would have played this second album differently.

Also her iconic dress caused a stir which has a note written on the back which read: She's been watching too much Mr. Robot.

^ Lorde's response really hits home for me. I'm actually attending her concert in Toronto with the boy I think about when I listen to her album. Sure is gonna be quite the experience... lol

Canβt she SMASH with something ugh. I want people to be exposed to her album. Like ANTIβs success but for Melodrama. Sad!

I think her management is at fault somewhat. I wouldnβt have done a traditional campaign for her, and would have focused on building some hype first, and not have depended on Green Lightβs radio success. An online campaign to garner streaming interest, and serve intense visuals.
1. Sober Part 2 music video/promo single to showcase the tone of the album/announce release date and lead single release date 2. Perfect Places as lead single 3. Homade Dynamite 4. Liability/Liability reprise, epic video not expecting much from radio, but if she had some momentum I could see it pulling that black sheep piano ballad spot that radio sometimes gives to a song. 5. Sober as the last single.
I also think if any album should have been a visual one- it was this

Liability would never have gotten pop radio play. They aren't going to play just a vocal & piano, they'd need to add some sort of a beat to it.

As much as her team left her down, this is not a commercial album. Let's not pretend this would have smashed across the board if the singles were more carefully chosen and/or she promoted it more. This is an amazing album but not a commercial one. She still deserved more success than she had.

Some of her tracks have new production on them for the tour, most notably "Ribs" and "Yellow Flicker Beat."
Here's what I got from "Ribs" last night!
BTW, it's not incredibly clear in the video, but at the end, she enters the box, strips down to her underwear and ends up putting on a red/pink dress.

Saw her last night in Toronto. She was incredible, I cried a good 4 times. "Green Light" live is life-affirming.

Saw her in Toronto w/ the boy I think about when I listen to this album, and it was an absolutely transcendental experience. She has impressive stage presence for someone her age.

A short report.
People weren't paying attention to Mitski, partly because she came off as a pretty awkward (even arrogant) performer. No self introduction until three or four songs deep, and near-zero communication with the audience. I like her style but she was a terrible choice for opening a stadium-level tour.
RTJ was the opposite of that. They made the crowd hyped, shouting and dancing, especially the girls. I really appreciate the positive messages they kept sending out, and they are absolutely excellent live performers. Nevertheless, seeing them at a Lorde concert? I think they do not go well with Lorde in terms of musical style. Some people in my section left during their performance because they thought it was too loud and noisy.
Lorde was just marvelous from start to end. The stadium was 80% filled. I was a bit surprised that the crowd reacted to her new materials way better than the old ones. Her performance of "Writer in the Dark" was touching, might be the highlight of the night. The unreleased song "Precious Metals" was pretty good and I'm curious to hear the studio version. The closing songs "Green Light" and "Team" were great choices and absolute fun.
Overall, I'm glad I didn't miss this chance to see her. Lorde definitely deserves more recognition as an entertainer.

Yasss glad you saw her too! I was really happy at how much the audience at my show loved her new material even all the album tracks like Sober. RTJ was AMAZINGGGGG so good my friends were like wtf no one knew them but they had so much energy and like you said they had an awesome message they kept sending out. It was cool to see two big dudes/rappers constantly shouting out these positive feminist messages and encouraging young girls to love themselves lol. Lorde was amazing she NEEDS another smash album I'm not okay with her flopping.

Lorde is so perfect live. Her Chicago show was mind blowing. "Green Light" is perfect live, but "The Louvre" is also an epic Oprah ah ha moment live. Definitely one of my favorite concerts.
