I realize this isn't a single but it's getting a lot of plays, and since this forum discusses charts...
Anyways the real reason I started this is that because I know this is the song he sang at the CMA's live, but is there a studio version available/produced? It seems like it is recieving a lot of plays for being a live track, but I Googled it and couldn't find anything.

The song has not been recorded. Tim wrote it along with the Warren Brothers just within the past few weeks. Brett and Brad Warren called Tim and asked what he was going to do with the song, and he said just wait and see and watch the ACMs.
The rumor is now that he'll either re-release Let It Go with this included, or this will be released to charity via iTunes or something similar. Curb has been getting swamped with requests from radio stations, so we will see what happens. It's an amazing song, to put it mildly.

Does anyone know when the last time a song from a live performance charted? I can't remember it happening since I began following the charts closely.

The only one I know of is Johnny Cash..
Actually, thinking about it, I remember a Buck Owens one entered too. ;)

I could be wrong (hell, knowing me Im PROBABLY wrong), But I seem to remember Tim McGraws Things Change was performed at some awards show before Set This Circus Down cd came out and radio played the fire out of that live version , I remember scraching my head when just a few short weeks later he went with a entirely different lead single.
On a side note , as much as I REALLY want a studio version of this, I hope they just go with the I-Tunes idea and NOT re-releasing Let It Go. I really hate when artists do that. I still begrudge Garth Brooks and Chris Cagle for those sort of stunts. And I certinally wouldnt RE-purchase a record for one song.

I remember reading about that on another board now that you mention it. Edit: I just looked on Wikipedia, and it looks like the live version of "Things Change" made it to #32 on Billboard. A footnote mentions that it was the first single to chart "as the result of a download from a live performance on the CMA Awards."

Garth charted a bunch of songs chart off Double Live, including "It's Your Song" (which, if I recall, had both the live version and a radio-only studio version -- my station played both).
Wasn't Faith's "Star Spangled Banner" live?

Did "Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)" chart before Alan recorded a studio version? I know my station only played the live version.

Absolutely beautiful and moving song. The most moving tune I've heard since "Where Were You." And boo to anyone who says it's exploitation of a sensitive subject (I've read this opinion elsewhere).

No , I believe msm444 may be correct. I seem to remember it took Alan a week or two to record it in the studio....

Does anyone know when the last time a song from a live performance charted? I can't remember it happening since I began following the charts closely. Carrie and Rascal Flatts' "BTBR" from the AI finale charted for 1 week back in 2005.

It was the studio version of 'Where Were You' which soared from nowhere to #1 in just six weeks at R&R, and spent five weeks at #1, making in the second of three consecutive five week charttoppers at R&R, between 'I Wanna Talk About Me' & 'Good Morning Beautiful.'

Looks like this is gonna be Top 40 this week -- mighty impressive for an album cut. (What position did Things Change debut at on the charts?)

Yeah, I remember when "Things Change" was played on the radio after the CMA's back in 2000. Interesting how many radio stations played a tune from Napster, given the sensitive nature of file sharing. I read somewhere at the time that it was the highest charting non-single ever, at least up to that point. I didn't watch the peformance so I don't know what kind of buzz was created, but I know there were definitely mixed opinions on the song. The reaction to "If You're Reading This" seems much more uniformly positive, in the vein of "Where Were You..."
I wouldn't mind if Curb re-released the album with the song on it as well as put the song on i-tunes. Then fans can either buy the new album if they haven't bought it yet (most people are actually in this boat) or if they don't want to purchase the album again they can just download the song from i-tunes. I would probably do the latter then just burn a new copy with the song on it.
I just wonder what they would do with all of the old copies of Let It Go that didn't have the song on it? Would they do a major pull-back or let the supply dwindle then integrate the new copies in? Who would buy the old version of if they could get the new version? What did Rascal Flatts do with their last album when they re-released it with the song "Life Is a Highway"?

I might be missing something, but I don't see why they would have to pull them back. They could either mark the old copies down, or the new ones up to make it fair - give the customers the same choice as the I-Tunes option.

This should be on a re-release of "Let It Go". It has more potential as a big single than anything on the album.

With a first-week total of 3.789 mill on Mediabase, it looks like this one will be aiming for a debut in the mid-30's, from #33 to #36, in the vicinity of Clay, the Wreckers, and Tomlinson. And with Timmy's "official" single I Need You gaining about 3.1 million for the week on Mediabase, that's a total of almost 7 mill in audience that Timmy added this week for his two songs. Normally, that would have me crying "Uncle" with pain and agony, but at least both songs are pretty good and listenable.
But still amazing that someone that records a song as idiotic and forgettable as Last Dollar (Fly Away) can then be responsible for a song as solid and moving as Reading This. Dr. Jekyll, meet Mr. Hyde...

Debuts at 35, as a matter of fact. As I said on the predictions thread -- what the heck's going on? Tim has two songs on the chart and they're both among his best work!

Wow, and here I thought "I Need You's" biggest competition would be a new single from Kenny Chesney. It turns out his biggest competition is...himself!
I really wonder what will come of having two new songs in the top 40. Could he actually have 2 songs rise simultaneously that don't detract airplay from one another? I Need You is a true duet. Maybe he'll end up replacing himself at #1 in July. That would be pretty neat! :) That's not really likely though.
More likely, "If You're Reading This" will slowly (or quickly) dissipate from the charts, possibly until its available on i-tunes or on a re-released version of Let It Go. I do believe that great music should be heard and this is great music. It's just a shame that right now, it's like feast or famine with Tim. Five months ago, all we had from him was Last Dollar and now we have 2 great songs at once! It's like when you go 1 year without dating anyone and all of a sudden there are 3 people interested in dating you on the same night. Why do we have to choose between 2 good things?!

Assuming that 'I Need You' follows 'I Told You So' to #1 this summer, I'm inclined to think that his label will certainly NOT complain about the spins and chart performance for 'If You're Reading This' while readying his next single for release.
Nice problem to have, huh?
Also, reservicing 'Let It Go' to include this stunning song would be a PR disaster, indefensibly stupid, downright unconscionable, and just flat-out dishonest.
Tim may be a lot of things, but a megacolossal greedy idiot is NOT one of them; there are TONS of other artists who've been blatantly dishonest by rereleasing CDs with a handful of new tracks, only to get decapitated on the cover of Billboard, and savaged by record label execs from coast to coast.
Mr. McGraw is too smart to join that reprehensible ccult.

i think this song is very good, but i cannot express how deeply i despise re-releases and bonus tracks!! i hate them because the make me want to repurchase the album ugh! i much prefer the itunes or charity route, such as carrie underwood did with "i'll stand by you".

Since we're not going to get another CD from Tim until the end of 2008 at the earliest, going the iTunes route would appear to be the best option.

From R.J. Curtis at R&R:
"If You're Reading This," Service Radio ASAP: Whatever and whoever it takes, the studio version of this Tim McGraw song needs to be in radio's hands, particularly this weekend, which, we remind you, is Memorial Day weekend. Tim's performance of the song was hands-down the moment of the ACM Awards last week, and that's not just our opinion -- ask anyone. R&R hears a studio version of the song does exist, but, as you can imagine, it's a complicated situation given the status of Tim & Faith's current single, "I Need You," which sits at No. 17 on the R&R chart. We get that, but when radio screams for a poignant song from a superstar artist that resonates with our core audience just in time for a national holiday honoring America's fallen warriors, somebody should step up and do the right thing.

I completely agree. If Curb doesn't give the studio version of this song to radio, maybe more people will start to realize how poorly Curb treats its artists. I'm sure Tim wouldn't mind sacrificing a likely #1 song ("I Need You") to get "If You're Reading This" out. On another note, if radio does get the studio version, will the spins of the live version be added to the studio version or will they both chart separately?

Well, since the Chart Highlights (and I'm assuming the actual chart if its updated - havent checked today yet) doesn't credit it as live, I would assume they would be added together.
